Since then, he has spent time <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/5\/16\/24156072\/lakers-jarred-vanderbilt-season-review-player-recap-injury-heel-knee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recovering from left heel bursitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s an injury that has taken Vanderbilt a long while to rehab from, and according to new rumors, that timeline could stretch into the upcoming season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Rumors: Key Forward May Not Be Ready for Training Camp<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lakers Analyst Voices Concern over Vanderbilt<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Bresnahan, a Lakers analyst for Spectrum Sportsnet and co-host of the network\u2019s \u201cLakeshow\u201d podcast, fielded a question regarding whether Vanderbilt and fellow Laker <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabe Vincent<\/a> would be ready for the upcoming season. When discussing the former Kentucky forward, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pPTOw8D35DY?si=1lP-YSP-Z_GnQPrF&amp;t=894\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bresnahan said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVando\u2019s gonna be interesting. I\u2019m not sure he\u2019ll be ready for training camp or even for the preseason games\u2026He opted not to have a procedure in-season when he got hurt in February, so we\u2019ll see if he\u2019s ready to go. I don\u2019t have a lot of details on it, but I\u2019m not sure he\u2019ll be ready for training camp. Regular season [is a] different story. Hopefully he\u2019s ready by then, but nothing concrete on him yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across 29 games, Vanderbilt averaged 5.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game on .518\/.296\/.667 splits. Injuries were the unfortunate storyline of the 25-year-old\u2019s sixth year in the league. He had <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01\/gamelog\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missed the first 20 games of last season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to a similar issue with his heel, and debuted on Dec. 2 against the Rockets. In only 13 minutes of action, Vanderbilt went scoreless but grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist. He continued to ramp up slowly before getting into a groove in January. According to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/5\/16\/24156072\/lakers-jarred-vanderbilt-season-review-player-recap-injury-heel-knee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Screen &amp; Roll\u2019s Alex Regla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the start of January and before his eventual season-ending injury, Vanderbilt had the best scoring stretch of his young career, shooting 77% at the rim, 54% from three and posting an eFG% of 67.4%.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Bresnahan mentioned, Vanderbilt decided against surgery in hopes of being available for the Lakers in the playoffs. However, that was not the case, and the team sorely missed him as they were swept by the Nuggets in the first-round of this year\u2019s playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where the Lakers Go From Here<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting training camp without a prominent player in Vanderbilt is clearly not ideal for the Lakers, who enter this season having to learn a new system under head coach <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As he\u2019s proven in the past year and change with LA, Vanderbilt is one of the team\u2019s best defensive players who provides size and versatility next to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He never backs down from elite competition on defense and has made an effort to improve his offensive repertoire. Redick has previously discussed Vanderbilt\u2019s importance to the team this season, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-jarred-vanderbilt-will-be-big-part-of-what-lakers-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think the unique thing about Jarred, and a number of really good teams that made deep playoff runs have guys like him, that are energy, defense, ball hawks. He can sort of \u2026 I call them energy shifters. He can change the energy of an entire game, and he doesn\u2019t have to do it with scoring, which makes him really unique. I can\u2019t wait to coach him. Obviously he has some rehab to do for the rest of the summer, but when he\u2019s healthy, he\u2019s going to be a big part of what we do.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Vanderbilt\u2019s status has yet to be concerned, the Lakers should remain focused on getting him at or near 100%\u2014even if that would result in him missing part of training camp. It\u2019s clear the team does not want a repeat of last season, where injuries to supporting role players derailed their high hopes.
