The latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/08\/24\/los-angeles-lakers-have-sights-set-on-perennial-mvp-candidate-luka-doncic-dallas-mavericks\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rumor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the team is eyeing Mavericks star <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have been surprising to some, but it also comes with the territory of having championship expectations. One former Laker\u2014who knows a thing or two about winning rings\u2014recently advised the franchise against trading for the five-time All-Star.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ex-Lakers Champion Warns About Trading for Luka Doncic<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Former Player Takes Shots at Doncic<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a recent episode of his podcast, \u201cBig Shot Bob,\u201d seven-time champion <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/horryro01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Horry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was asked about the rumors connecting Doncic to the purple and gold, and responded:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou gotta think about this\u2026He ain\u2019t the best defensive player now. That\u2019s the Lakers problem. You\u2019ve gotta have some athletic guys that can play some defense. Luka, he can score with the best of them, but we also know you gotta take beers out of his hand because he ain\u2019t the one that [stays] in shape. He [is] gonna be good, but he ain\u2019t gonna be what you need, probably.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/luka-doncic-mavericks-record-73-points#:~:text=Doncic%20scored%20a%20franchise%2Drecord,Atlanta%20Hawks%20on%20Friday%20night.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who finished third in MVP voting\u2014is currently under contract for three more seasons and is owed nearly $138 million in that span. Last season, the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/mavericks\/news\/dallas-mavs-luka-doncic-becomes-youngest-nba-scoring-champion-since-kevin-durant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 scoring champion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> averaged nearly 34 points and 10 assists per game on .487\/.382\/.786 splits and led Dallas to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2011. There is currently no indication that Mark Cuban and Nico Harrison are hoping to blow up the team\u2014especially not after the newfound success\u2014but the rumor has certainly sparked conversations in NBA circles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are Horry\u2019s Criticisms Valid?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horry brings up solid points when evaluating Doncic against the Lakers\u2019 needs. While he has averaged north of 20 points per game in every season of his career, Doncic has historically been a defensive liability. Those woes were <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nba\/news\/luka-doncics-defense-hits-shameful-levels-with-mavericks-on-brink-of-being-swept-by-celtics\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exemplified during the NBA Finals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighted by him fouling out in a pivotal Game 3. For a Lakers team that has struggled with point-of-attack defense\u2014in part, due to injuries to key players\u2014adding a one-sided superstar in Doncic won\u2019t help them on that end of the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while Doncic hasn\u2019t beaten the criticism of his defense, he has leaped above the concerns about his athleticism. Doncic has previously said he\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mavs.com\/lukas-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cathletic in different ways\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that, \u201cNot everything is about jumping and running fast.\u201d His basketball IQ was also evident in a recent interview with former teammate and\u2014ironically\u2014the Lakers\u2019 current head coach, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Part 2 of our Luka teaser\u2026<\/p>\n<p>JJ: How much do you practice the full speed to the decel?<\/p>\n<p>Luka: I didn\u2019t practice that.<\/p>\n<p>JJ: You\u2019re a sick f*ck.<a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ONSNdsg0g1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/ONSNdsg0g1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jason Gallagher (@jga41agher) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jga41agher\/status\/1755727411679805915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The founder of the Peak Performance Project (P3), Dr. Marcus Elliot, has affirmed Doncic&#8217;s statements through metrics, stating that the Mavs star was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mavsmoneyball.com\/2024\/7\/9\/24194013\/experts-say-luka-doncic-is-an-elite-athlete-should-we-rethink-how-we-think-about-athleticism#:~:text=When%20asked%20who%20was%20the,an%20athlete%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most impressive athlete P3 has assessed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our athleticism metrics have him off the charts and nobody thinks he\u2019s an athlete. Luka jumps lower than your average NBA guard. He doesn\u2019t jump very high, he doesn\u2019t run very fast. But he stops better than almost any other athlete we\u2019ve ever assessed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at it from both perspectives, it\u2019s clear that trading for Doncic is a double-edged sword for any team. Horry\u2019s claims about Luka certainly hold weight, but Rob Pelinka and the Lakers may still see things differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>For the Lakers: Is It Worth Trading for Luka?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering previous trade targets, Doncic may be the best candidate to join <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a potential post-<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> era. He\u2019ll be 27 when his current deal expires and could look to re-sign beyond the $50 million player option on the table. In many ways, Luka Doncic is exactly what the Lakers are looking for: a young superstar who has the skills to lead a winning franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s incredibly unlikely that the Mavericks move on from Doncic in a few years. They have already established a dynamic duo between him and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyrie Irving<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and built a solid supporting cast around them&#8212;one that has been to the top in a remarkably quick period of time. The addition of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Klay Thompson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> further signals their commitment to building a winning squad around the Slovenian superstar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it wouldn\u2019t stop the Lakers from trying to land Doncic. In terms of trade assets, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/contracts\/LAL.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most of their players are signed through next season only<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is when LeBron has to decide on a $52 million player option. Without any sign-and-trade, they could match Doncic\u2019s $46 million with some combination of the following: <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($18.2 million), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($13.9 million), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($11.5 million), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($11.5 million) and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Christie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($7.7 million). Those players, combined with any future first-round picks, will not be enough to woo Cuban and Harrison in the slightest. Plus, Doncic has remained committed to the Mavs just as they\u2019ve remained committed to him.
