He went to David W. Carter High School in Dallas, and then had a stellar four-year career at Texas Tech. Unfortunately, tragedy struck almost five years ago. On September 23, 2019, Emmett was killed at the age of 37. He was shot in a robbery in Dallas.

Emmett’s legacy continues to live on, and more of that was seen on August 24.

Dallas Basketball Legend Remembered At Youth Basketball Camp

Third Annual Youth Basketball Camp In Emmett’s Honor

There was a youth basketball camp that took place on August 24 at a YMCA in Oak Cliff, a neighborhood in Dallas. It was the third annual Summer Skills Camp in honor of Emmett. Boys and girls between the ages of 8-17 were allowed to register.

The event was hosted by Emmett’s mother, Regina Oliver. There were more than 40 children who took part in the basketball camp.

“Andre is watching” Oliver told FOX4 KFDW. “He is seeing my mom and my family – keeping up the tradition.”

There were some notable guests at the camp celebrating Emmett’s life as well. Chris Beard, head coach at Texas Tech from 2016-17 to 2020-21 and the current coach at Ole Miss, attended. Beard was an assistant at Texas Tech while Emmett was there. Also there was Stephen Jackson, 14-year NBA veteran who won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. Former teammates of Emmett were also in attendance.

Playing Career Included NBA Stint

A six-foot-five guard/forward, Emmett is one of the all-time greats to play basketball at Texas Tech. He played four seasons at the school from 2000-01 to 2003-04. Who was his coach in college? None other than the late Bobby Knight. Emmett had this to say about Knight when interviewing with Red Raider Sports in 2018.

Knight asked me, “Do you like me?” I replied, “Sometimes”. He then said “We’re even”. I looked at him and asked how? He replied “Well, I don’t like you when you don’t do what I tell you to do…” I straightened my face back up and replied “Ok, that’s fair.”

Emmett is the all-time leading scorer in school history with his 2,256 points. He also has the most in a single season, which came in his junior year when he totaled 741. Emmett is also the school’s all-time leader with 266 offensive rebounds, all the more impressive being that he stood just six-foot-five.

In 128 games for Texas Tech, Emmett posted averages of 17.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.3 steals. He shot 50.0% from the field, 31.2% from three-point territory, and 70.3% from the foul line. Emmett was a first-team All-American as a senior and first-team All-Big 12 each of his last three years.

Andre Emmett Got To Play In The NBA

In the 2004 NBA Draft, Emmett was selected in the second round (35th overall). He was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics, but was traded on draft night to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Emmett would play eight games for Memphis in his rookie season of 2004-05. He didn’t get to play in the NBA again until the New Jersey Nets signed him in February of 2012. Emmett would appear in six games for them. In his 14 NBA games, Emmett totaled 20 points and eight rebounds.

Andre Emmett is a basketball legend in the Texas area. He went to David W.
