The team has officially brought in Dr. Leroy Sims as their Director of Player Performance and Health, completing a key step under the vision of new head coach <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers News: Team Hires Director of Player Performance and Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Background<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news was announced in a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mcten\/status\/1826322712232689686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team press release posted Wednesday morning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It noted that <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/stanfordmag.org\/contents\/the-doctor-in-charge-of-the-nba-bubble\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will report to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, and that he \u201cwill oversee player medical care and the optimization of health and performance,\u201d adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDr. Sims most recently served as the Senior Vice President, Head of Medical Operations at the NBA where he developed and implemented innovative health and safety protocols, investigated medical technologies to optimize basketball experiences and conducted medical risk assessments. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine and was a key member of the team who executed the medical operations for the NBA Bubble in 2020. Dr. Sims served as the team physician for USA Track and Field at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and provided direct medical support to USA Basketball at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics. From 2011-14, he served as the medical director and team physician for the Golden State Warriors.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>How Sims Fits into the Redick Era<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/newsletter\/2024-08-21\/changes-jj-redick-lakers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has previously emphasized the importance of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/7\/3\/24191859\/lakers-jj-redick-director-of-player-development-nba-offseason-bronny-james\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">player development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how it is a key facet of his vision for the Lakers. Player health is obviously a key aspect of that, which is why Sims will play a crucial role for LA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries have been a major storyline for the purple and gold over the last few seasons. The Lakers previously fired three top medical staff members over the course of five seasons: head athletic trainers <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nba\/news\/los-angeles-lakers-changing-training-staff-after-injury-plagued-season-per-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marco Nu\u00f1ez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2019) and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nba\/news\/los-angeles-lakers-changing-training-staff-after-injury-plagued-season-per-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nina Hsieh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021), as well as director of sports performance <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2022\/4\/27\/23045518\/judy-seto-lakers-fired-released-athletic-trainer-kobe-bryant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy Seto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2022). <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/lakers\/news\/lakers-news-after-months-in-limbo-team-finally-fills-out-training-staff\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Sancho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was hired as the team\u2019s athletic trainer in 2021 and has remained with the team since then. Sims\u2019 hire does not appear to impact Sancho\u2019s status with the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning to the players, last year\u2014aside from <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> staying remarkably healthy\u2014the team\u2019s supporting cast was decimated by injuries. The most notable examples were <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who both missed a majority of the season with a foot sprain and knee effusion, respectively. Additionally, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Reddish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0missed several weeks due to persistent knee issues. Sims\u2019 addition looks to build on the innovative mindset the Lakers have adopted this offseason. His track record aligns perfectly with what Redick and the Lakers are trying to build. There is no doubt he can help maximize this roster\u2019s health, a necessity in a competitive Western Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sims is Second Lakers Hire This Month<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sims appears to be one of the last pieces in the puzzle to begin the Redick era. He joins a revamped coaching staff hellbent on helping the first-year head coach, as well as the team\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/lakers-hired-ty-abbott-lead-052008362.html#:~:text=Lakers%20have%20hired%20Ty%20Abbott%20as%20their%20lead%20player%20development%20coach,-robertmarvi\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new player development director, Ty Abbott<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Abbott has spent the last six years as a player development coach and director. He played professionally overseas and in the G League from 2012 to 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA enters this season with strong staffs on multiple fronts, from experience on the sidelines to innovation in player development.
