This article will focus on the best defender on every Eastern Conference team. The same list for the Western Conference can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/24\/the-best-defender-on-every-western-conference-nba-team\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Defender on Every Eastern Conference NBA Team<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Atlanta Hawks: Dyson Daniels\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawks&#8217; defense has struggled for the past few seasons notably they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/defense?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ranked<\/a> just 27th last year. However, as a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dejounte Murray<\/a> trade the Hawks landed one of the most underrated young players and an elite defender in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/daniedy01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dyson Daniels<\/a>. The 2022 lottery pick has struggled to find a consistent role with the Pelicans due to their loaded rotation. Daniels, six-foot-eight is a jumbo-sized point-attack-defender with the ability to guard multiple positions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season Daniels posted an impressive 2.2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/daniedy01.html#advanced\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive win shares<\/a> and ranked in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">88th percentile<\/a> for defensive plus\/minus. According to data from <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/The_BBall_Index\/status\/1783556588013514965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBall Index<\/a> Daniels is the league&#8217;s third-best point-of-attack defender. With a larger role in Atlanta, more people will recognize Daniels\u2019 elite defense and he is poised to have a breakout year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Boston Celtics: Jrue Holiday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics have several elite defenders including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitede01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derrick White<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jayson Tatum<\/a> however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jrue Holiday<\/a> stands out as the best. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/01\/17\/jrue-holidays-incredible-sacrifice-this-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Holiday<\/a> is not only one of the best perimeter defenders in the league but is also incredibly versatile. His defense was crucial during the Celtics championship run. Holiday is well-known as a clutch defender especially for his game-clinching steals against the Pacers in 2024 and against Phoenix in the 2021 Finals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, Holiday is a six-time all-defensive team member with four consecutive selections. According to data from CraftedNBA Holiday ranks in the 99th percentile for <a  href=\"https:\/\/craftednba.com\/player-traits\/versatile\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">versatility<\/a> and the 89th for <a  href=\"https:\/\/craftednba.com\/player-traits\/versatile\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">matchup difficulty<\/a>. Furthermore, Holiday ranked in the 87th percentile for <a  href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive plus\/minus<\/a> and posted 3.0 <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html#all_advanced-playoffs_advanced\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive winshares<\/a>. However, an under-the-radar move was bringing back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/claxtni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nic Claxton<\/a> to a reasonable four-year $100 million dollar deal. Claxton, 25 is one of the NBA&#8217;s best rim protectors and is highly switchable. Last season he averaged 2.1 blocks in 2022-23 he averaged 2.5 blocks and finished ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Claxton also posted 3.2 <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/claxtni01.html#advanced\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive win shares<\/a> last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Charlotte Hornets: Mark Williams\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, health has been a problem for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willima07.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Williams<\/a>, he has only played 62 total games in his two seasons in the league including just 19 games this past season. However, Williams is an underrated young player and a high-quality defender. Throughout his career, Williams has averaged a block per game. Williams has also posted a negative<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612766\/onoffcourt-summary?Season=2023-24&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DIFF_DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> net defensive-difference<\/a> in both of his seasons as a pro.\u00a0Ultimately, Williams is a mobile rim protector and at 22 he has tons of upside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Chicago Bulls: Patrick Williams<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bulls don\u2019t have many options for the best defender after trading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carusal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Caruso<\/a> to the Thunder. Nevertheless, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willipa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Williams<\/a> is a high-quality young wing defender, Notably the Bulls gave Williams a five-year $90 million dollar contract this offseason. This was in large part due to Williams&#8217; defensive abilities and upside at 22. Williams is a high-level versatile wing defender with an ideal combination of strength, speed, athleticism, and IQ. Notably, Williams ranked in the 83rd percentile for <a  href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive plus\/minus<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cleveland Cavaliers: Evan Mobley\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mobleev01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evan Mobley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrett Allen<\/a> are both premier defenders. However, Mobley\u2019s elite versatility gives him the edge over Allen who is more of a traditional defensive anchor. Mobley\u2019s combination of rim protection and versatility make him one of the top defenders in the league. In the 2022-23 season, Mobley finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Notably during that season, Mobley\u2019s 4.8 <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leaders\/dws_yearly.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive win shares<\/a> lead the league. While he will have tough competition with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wembavi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Wembanyama<\/a>\u2019s defensive dominance <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/11\/cavs-to-give-evan-mobley-224-million-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Mobley<\/a> will likely be in several DPOY conversations down the road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Detroit Pistons: Ausar Thompson \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a lowly Pistons squad, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ausar Thompson<\/a>\u00a0was a bright spot last season. Thompson is a highly versatile 6-foot-7 wing who has an ideal combination of speed, strength, and athleticism. This skill set allowed Thompson to make an immediate impact as a rookie. Impressively, Thompson posted a -5.9<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612765\/onoffcourt-summary?Season=2023-24&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DIFF_DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> net defensive difference<\/a>. On an improved Pistons squad,\u00a0Thompson could make an even more noticeable defensive impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Indiana Pacers: Myles Turner<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pacers 24th ranked <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/defense?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defense<\/a> was a clear weak point in an otherwise stellar season. Regardless, the Pacers still have several impactful defenders including versatile wings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nesmiaa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Nesmith<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/siakapa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pascal Siakam<\/a> as well as <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccontj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. McConnell<\/a> who is a pesky perimeter defender. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnemy01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Turner<\/a> is the ultimate choice for the Pacer&#8217;s best defender. Turner is one of the league\u2019s best shot blockers averaging a career 2.2 blocks per game. Notably, Turner is a two-time block champ in 2020-21 he averaged 3.4 blocks and in 2018-19 he averaged 2.7 both seasons saw Turner finish within the top 10 of Defensive Player of the Year voting. While he\u2019s not an elite rim protector Turner\u2019s shot-blocking and switchability make him a highly valuable defender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Miami Heat: Bam Adebayo\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/adebaba01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bam Adebayo<\/a> is one of the NBA&#8217;s best and most consistent defenders. Adebayo has made five consecutive <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/22\/miami-heat-center-earns-first-all-defensive-first-team-honors\/\" target=\"_self\">All-Defensive teams<\/a> and finished top five in Defensive Player of the Year voting in each of those seasons. His elite rim protection paired with unmatched versatility gives him a strong case as a top-three defender in the association. Impressively this past season Bam ranked in the <a  href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">97th percentile<\/a> for defensive plus\/minus and had 4.3 defensive win shares. Bam led the Heat to a top-five defense. Overall there are only a few players with more defensive responsibilities and impact than Adebayo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bam Adebayo is a 1 of 1 Defender\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-quPW4ElTmQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Milwaukee Bucks: Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some people have forgotten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a> remains one of the league\u2019s top defenders. The Greek Freak is a five-time All-Defensive team member and the 2019-20 Defensive Player of the Year. Notably, he is one of three players in NBA history to win MVP and DPOY in the same season. Giannis\u2019 elite combination of athleticism, size, and agility make him one of the most impactful defenders in the league. This past season Giannis ranked in the 92nd percentile for <a href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive plus\/minus<\/a> and earned 3.7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html#advanced\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive win shares<\/a>. Ultimately, Giannis&#8217; elite two-way abilities have made him a superstar for years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New York Knicks: OG Anunoby\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/26\/knicks-make-a-huge-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">trading for Mikal Bridges<\/a> this summer the Knicks have two of the league&#8217;s premier wing defenders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anunoog01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OG Anunoby<\/a> and Bridges are two incredibly impactful and disruptive defenders. Bridges&#8217; unmatched durability gives him an initial advantage. However, Anunoby&#8217;s superior on-ball defense and advanced metrics give him a slight edge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impressively with OG on the court, the Knicks had an absurd 100.9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612752\/onoffcourt-summary?Season=2023-24&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DIFF_DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive rating<\/a> giving OG a -14.1 net difference. <a href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anunoby<\/a> also ranked in the 99th percentile for defensive plus-minus. Ultimately, either wing is a valid choice for the team\u2019s best defender and it will be interesting to see who the Knicks put on the opposition&#8217;s best player.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Orlando Magic: Jalen Suggs\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/30\/up-and-coming-team-inks-two-time-nba-champion\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">addition<\/a> of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldwke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kentavious Caldwell-Pope<\/a> the Magic have two of the league\u2019s best perimeter defenders. Either KCP or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suggsja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Suggs<\/a> is a reasonable choice for Orlando\u2019s best defender. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/isaacjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Isaac<\/a> could also be in the mix however, his constant injuries hurt his case. While KCP&#8217;s experience gives him an advantage Suggs was the more productive defensive player last season and projects to be Orlando&#8217;s main on-ball stopper this upcoming season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggs made All-Defensive second team last year and has an unmatched motor which allows him to be an elite point-of-attack defender. \u00a0<a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/The_BBall_Index\/status\/1783556588013514965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBall Index<\/a> ranked Suggs as the league&#8217;s second-best point-of-attack defender. Suggs ranked in the 98th percentile for defensive <a  href=\"https:\/\/dunksandthrees.com\/epm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plus\/minus<\/a> and had 3.2 defensive <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suggsja01.html#advanced\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">win shares<\/a>.
