Throughout the two weeks in Las Vegas, several players showed why they deserved to join LA\u2019s roster, and they\u2019ll look to showcase that same growth when training camp begins in October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what we learned from LA\u2019s sizzling summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Summer League: Lessons From Dalton Knecht, Bronny James and More<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Dalton Knecht Proves His Worth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With every promising performance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to prove why the Lakers got a steal in the first-round. The 6\u20196\u201d wing showed he was more than just a sharpshooter throughout the summer. He made impressive passes, strung together defensive stops, and occasionally got up for the highlight slam. Across three games in Vegas, the 24-year-old averaged 21.3 points on .418\/.391\/.818 splits. He also put up 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knecht\u2019s versatility will be a critical point of his growth, and there\u2019s a good chance he could enter LA\u2019s rotation sooner than later. During an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-lakers-dalton-knecht-needs-to-improve-defensively\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview with ESPN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head coach <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> touched on the things Knecht must develop:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know he can shoot the ball. I spent 30 minutes with him yesterday on the court after practice with live defense, going through some actions and just working with him on creating separation. He shot pretty darn well. I know he can shoot it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo it\u2019s the other parts of his game. The defense. The rebounding. The passing. Just the feel of the game that I have also been impressed with\u2026 Obviously, we know in the NBA you have to be a two-way player to make an impact, and defensively he\u2019s got to improve like any rookie.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for Knecht\u2019s defense to be a point of emphasis when training camp rolls around. It could be a swing skill that decides the rookie\u2019s fate in this year\u2019s rotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bronny James Growing Comfortable<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After several disappointing outings and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/18\/is-bronny-james-getting-too-much-criticism-for-his-summer-league-performances\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voices of doubt growing louder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesbr02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bronny James<\/a> appeared to silence his critics for the time being with back-to-back strong showings. He <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bronny-james-summer-league-nba-lakers-6522401227bccf55a7878e8d6c40c81b\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scored 12 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 5\/11 shooting from the field and 2\/5 from three-point range in a tight win over the Cavs on July 17. He followed that up with a 13-point performance on 5\/10 shooting, while also picking up five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Those two games brought his averages up to 8.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and one assist per game on 35% shooting from the field and 16% from deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Jr. was eventually shut down prior to LA\u2019s summer finale, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bronny-james-lakers-lebron-summer-league-64ffcd538eaf127cf7ea6780864281e0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the reasoning outlined by Summer League head coach Dane Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had two pretty good games last two. I think it\u2019s just going to help him going into the summer so we can work on different things with him. Just that confidence and knowing he can play at this level. It\u2019s still going to take a lot of time and a lot of reps.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took a few games to knock the rust off for Bronny, whose lone college season was marked by recovery from a cardiac arrest incident a year ago. However, as Johnson said, he\u2019ll be taking this newfound confidence with him to training camp with an opportunity to thrive under Redick\u2019s player development system. The tools are there for Bronny to have a solid role on the Lakers\u2014even if he must spend some time in the G League, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5622822\/2024\/07\/18\/bronny-james-lakers-nba-summer-league-lebron\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which he is not opposed to doing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Blake Hinson is a Flamethrower<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it was a rocky summer overall for Blake Hinson, one of LA\u2019s newest two-way rookies, he proved why the Lakers made a great decision signing him. With Bronny, Knecht and rising sophomore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lewisma05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maxwell Lewis<\/a> held out of Saturday\u2019s game, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/nba-2k25-summer-league-bulls-lakers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hinson shined with 25 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201421 in the first half\u2014along with three rebounds and two assists. The 6\u20198\u201d wing hit five threes as well, reminiscent of his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YifThvUz3EU?si=Au4HyLxxErF9NLRn\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Classic debut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where he dropped 17 points on 5\/7 shooting from deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Blake Hinson continued a good Summer League by leading the Lakers to a 107-81 win and leading the team in scoring with 25 points.<\/p>\n<p>The 2x All-ACC performer can fill it up and score from anywhere. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gmbrshcIlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/gmbrshcIlP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; GREENLIGHT MEDIA (@greenlightbball) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greenlightbball\/status\/1814888533381034022?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 21, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hailed by some as one of the best shooters in this year\u2019s class, the former Pitt forward has not been shy of showing off his range. While it inevitably led to some inconsistent performances this summer, the Lakers have found another player who is willing to take and make threes at a high clip. Hinson\u2019s shooting will no doubt translate into training camp. But similar to Knecht, he must grow in other areas to become a versatile forward who can get NBA minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Could These Two Players Earn Camp Invites?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of LA\u2019s most intriguing rookies is someone who was picked up right before Las Vegas Summer League. Former Belmont guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/grayson-murphy-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grayson Murphy<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/belmontbruins.com\/news\/2024\/7\/3\/mens-basketball-grayson-murphy-part-of-the-los-angeles-lakers-summer-league-roster.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joined the Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the California Classic. The three-time All-OVC selection and two-time conference Defensive Player of the Year averaged 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists on .528\/.322\/.575 splits. He only played one game in the purple and gold\u2014yesterday against Chicago\u2014but he certainly made the most of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Grayson Murphy took advantage of all 24 of his minutes last night as the <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Lakers<\/a> defeated the Bulls in their final game of <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBASummerLeague?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@NBASummerLeague<\/a>!  <\/p>\n<p>5 pt | 11 reb | 10 ast | 3 stl | 0 TO<a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_GraysonMurphy_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@_GraysonMurphy_<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/enMm71pV6s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/enMm71pV6s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Potter Sports Group (@PotterSportsLLC) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PotterSportsLLC\/status\/1814981935854178765?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 21, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murphy\u2019s single-game appearance may not be a guarantee for a future contract with the Lakers, but it proved he should at least receive consideration for one. At 6\u20192\u201d, Murphy impressed many with his rebounding and playmaking instincts\u2014not to mention his solid defense. He could grow into a legit NBA-level talent with the Lakers if they\u2019re willing to keep him around for camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another name that could warrant a camp invite is former UCLA big man <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownmo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unlike most of the Summer League Lakers, the 7\u20192\u201d Brown is an NBA journeyman who played for five teams in as many years. He most recently played two games for the Trail Blazers\u2019 G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix, and averaged nine points, 6.5 rebounds and one assist on 42% shooting from the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In four Summer League contests with the Lakers, Brown put up 9.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game while making 54% of his field goals. While he may not be the exact center <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/15\/lakers-head-coach-reveals-ideal-addition-to-roster-anthony-davis-wendell-carter-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be looking for in terms of experience, Brown clearly has a league-ready frame with plenty of untapped potential.
