He added a notable wrinkle in his comments, however, addressing what exactly the team needs next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Head Coach Reveals Ideal Addition to Roster<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Redick\u2019s Revelation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick made his feelings about the roster known towards the end of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SiriusXMNBA\/status\/1811953695849857099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this clip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted to X (formerly Twitter):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You certainly have to look at what I think is actually a very good roster, a very balanced roster. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019d love\u2014you know, we tried\u2014but we\u2019d love to, at some point, get another five man. A big, bruising five man. You look at the Western Conference right now, whether it\u2019s Denver, Minnesota, OKC\u2014what they added\u2014certainly Memphis\u2014they\u2019re gonna be back in the hunt, they added Zach Edey\u2026In certain matchups in the playoffs, you\u2019re gonna need a lot of size.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><b>What This Means for Anthony Davis<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick echoed a sentiment that fans have been clamoring for in the past few seasons. Despite <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dominance at center, he already proved how dangerous he can be at power forward. The Lakers used him at the four in the beginning of his tenure, but went away from that only one season after their 2020 title run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting AD in the middle has come with mixed results. He still produced at a high level in 2022 and 2023, averaging 23.2 and 25.9 PPG, respectively. However, that also came with a slew of injuries that caused him to miss more than 20 games in both of those seasons (he played 40 in 2021-22 and 56 in 2022-23). This past year was his best since becoming LA\u2019s full-time five man. In a career-best 76 games, Davis averaged 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.3 blocks per game. It was an All-Star caliber season marked by All-Defensive First Team and All-NBA Second Team selections, but he was not a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year\u2014<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2024.html#all_dpoy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coming in fourth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind Heat center <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/adebaba01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bam Adebayo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since coming onboard, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/24\/lakers-introduce-jj-redick-as-head-coach-three-takeaways\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick has envisioned Davis to be an offensive hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it seems playing AD next to a strong, starting-caliber five is his way of maximizing his talents. He also brought up an excellent point about needing size in the playoffs, as their height disadvantage was a nail in the coffin during their playoff losses to Denver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, even with such a promising vision, the Lakers have not taken many steps towards improvement. As Redick mentioned, they already tried\u2014and, frankly, failed miserably\u2014to add any help so far this offseason. There may still be ways to get Redick the center he wants, but as this summer has shown, it won\u2019t be easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Lakers Quest for Center Depth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 current big men besides Davis are <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014two thinner centers who still brought doses of athleticism and defense to the table. LA\u2019s hopes of replacing one or both of them this summer have not gone their way. Most bigs either <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/players\/free-agent-tracker\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">re-signed with their current franchises or moved on to better contenders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The rest, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/free-agents\/_\/year\/2024\/status\/available\/position\/c\/sort\/contract_value\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as it stands right now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, would not be worthy of starting next to Davis and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeBron James<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/11\/los-angeles-lakers-pursuing-former-top-10-draft-pick-wendell-carter-jr\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest rumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cartewe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendell Carter Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pursuit are promising, though there hasn\u2019t been much traction beyond the initial reports. Carter Jr. definitely fits the bill of what Redick is looking for. The 25-year-old Orlando big man stands at 6\u201910\u201d with a 270-pound frame, and is coming off of a productive third year for a young team on the rise. In 55 games (48 starts), Carter averaged 11 points, nearly 7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.5 blocks on .525\/.374\/.694 splits. His roughly $12 million payday is a relatively easy match, but it boils down to Orlando\u2019s asking price and willingness to trade him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some have speculated reacquiring <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brook Lopez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the way to go, but he\u2019s also 36 years old with a $23 million contract next season. Throwing <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/castlco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colin Castleton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a new role is another possibility\u2014especially now with Redick\u2019s focus on player development\u2014though it\u2019s too much pressure to put on a 24-year-old on a two-way contract. The Lakers also just <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/ucla\/news\/ucla-basketball-former-bruins-center-added-to-west-team-s-summer-league-roster-ml0802\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> former UCLA big <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownmo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their Summer League roster. However, it\u2019s too early to tell if he\u2019ll even be invited to training camp. As such, Carter Jr. is LA&#8217;s best bet to improve the center spot this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clock is ticking for the Lakers to make any sort of player changes this summer.
