{"id":85440,"date":"2024-07-10T15:45:31","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T19:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=85440"},"modified":"2024-07-10T15:45:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T19:45:31","slug":"nba-rumors-knicks-targeting-center-trade-match-sixers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/10\/nba-rumors-knicks-targeting-center-trade-match-sixers\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Rumors: Knicks Targeting Center Trade To Match Sixers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Knicks have been working diligently in an effort to capture an NBA championship.<\/p>\n<p>After adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikal Bridges<\/a> via trade, they re-signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anunoog01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OG Anunoby<\/a> shortly after. Both projected to start, their perimeter defense will put teams like the Boston Celtics to the test. However, while they\u2019re now able to match up with star wing duos, the Knicks still need to worry about the premium pivots littered around the league. One of them, Philadelphia 76ers center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Embiid<\/a>, is right in their backyard.<\/p>\n<p>Having lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harteis01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Hartenstein<\/a> to the Oklahoma City Thunder this offseason, New York is perusing for a starting center. In fact, they have two specific targets in mind, per the New York Post\u2019s Marc Berman: Houston Rockets center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alperen Sengun<\/a> and Detroit Pistons center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durenja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Duren<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Leon Rose was in 1st row of presser yesterday with Mikal&#8217;s mother. Didn&#8217;t talk, but he&#8217;s still cooking, wants to make big center move after Philly&#8217;s 2 additions. Heard Houston&#8217;s Sengun has been on radar, even Detroit&#8217;s Jalen Duren. Neither are similar to Hartenstein either. Nonetheless, they\u2019re both upgrades over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitchell Robinson<\/a>, the Knicks\u2019 incumbent starting center.<\/p>\n<h3>Alperen Sengun<\/h3>\n<p>Sengun would be the most skilled big man that the Knicks have had since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leeda02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Lee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those wondering why not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a>, a comparison of Sengun and Porzingis\u2019s playmaking impact tells the tale. Sengun is prone to tunnel vision at times, simply determined to score. However, he\u2019s a nifty passer who can operate as the fulcrum of an offense. Porzingis, like Robinson, was more-so refined to a scoring role.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, even Porzingis doesn\u2019t have Sengun\u2019s footwork or touch inside. He isn\u2019t the creative and instinctive scorer that Sengun is either. From that lens, the Turkish wonder is much closer to Embiid. With a career-high of 21.1 points per game, he\u2019s not as dominant, but <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/04\/13\/rockets-alperen-sengun-eligible-nba-award-games-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">his stock is trending upward<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The concern with Sengun is on the other end as he\u2019s only a so-so defender. Having improved his awareness and activity, he\u2019s no longer as much of a weak link. Nonetheless, defensive guru Tom Thibodeau will have to coach him up. Fortunately for the Knicks, Sengun\u2019s a willing learner.<\/p>\n<p>With the Rockets questioning whether to offer the 21-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/03\/rockets-lack-commitment-key-players-could-backfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">a max contract extension<\/a>, he could truly be available.<\/p>\n<h3>Jalen Duren<\/h3>\n<p>Duren\u2019s game is a bit simpler than Sengun\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>More of a traditional rim-running big man, he excels in the pick-and-roll and in transition. One of the most dominant rebounders in the league, he\u2019s just a force in the restricted area in general. Bouncy and muscle-bound, the 20-year-old\u2019s impact in the less glamorous areas of the game are easy to overlook until he\u2019s absent.<\/p>\n<p>Duren does have burgeoning scoring skills, including a decent post-up game and midrange jumper. He\u2019s also an underrated passer who could become a playmaker out of short rolls. Thibodeau may not ask it to be his bread-and-butter, but it\u2019s worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/03\/14\/pistons-lottery-pick-jalen-duren-hall-famers-historic-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">he has that in his bag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like Sengun, Thibodeau will have focus on teaching Duren defensively. Duren has great physical tools that should allow him to effectively guard players in space or inside the paint. In fact, his fluid mobility is what gives him greater defensive upside than Robinson in the modern NBA. Yet, Duren lacks optimal defensive awareness, his reactions a beat too slow. With that being said, he also needs to improve his ability to contest shots without fouling.<\/p>\n<p>As the Pistons are even more unsure about Duren being part of their core moving forward than the Rockets are about Sengun, he should be the more affordable option.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Knicks have been working diligently in an effort to capture an NBA championship.
