Aside from bringing in experienced coaches to <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JJ Redick<\/a>\u2019s staff and re-signing <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeBron James<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Christie<\/a>\u2014both notable \u201cwins\u201d this summer\u2014this offseason has left way more to be desired for the Lakers. However, with LeBron&#8217;s restructured contract <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeping them under the second apron&#8212;albeit <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BobbyMarks42\/status\/1809804192309039254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barely<\/a>&#8212;the team may have some flexibility to still make improvements, according to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5621333\/2024\/07\/07\/lebron-james-lakers-contract-nba\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Shams Charania and Jovan Buha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James\u2019 new contract puts the Lakers at just under the $188.9 million second apron. If the Lakers can salary dump a couple of their veteran minimum contracts \u2014 attaching a second-round pick to entice a trade partner \u2014 they\u2019d create two roster spots and the flexibility to use the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception. The Lakers have preferred to enter previous seasons with only 14 players on their roster for flexibility in trades and on the buyout market.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also noted there are two players the Lakers could look to add if they free up enough money and space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lakers Targeting Two Guards With Limited Roster Flexibility<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Gary Trent Jr.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers have kept an eye on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/trentga02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gary Trent Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the trade deadline in hopes of acquiring another shooter next to James and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 71 games (41 starts) for the Toronto Raptors, Trent Jr. averaged 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He shot 42% from the field, 39% from three and 77% from the free-throw line. Shooting is clearly the 25-year-old\u2019s best attribute\u2014case in point, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NBA_University\/status\/1804962792346124309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he led the league in wide-open threes this season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trent Jr. is coming off of a three-year, $51 million contract with the Raptors, who are unlikely to bring him back after a flurry of their own moves, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/raptors\/toronto-raptors-free-agent-gary-trent-jr-in-precarious-position-as-players-continue-to-sign\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as detailed by Sports Illustrated\u2019s Aaron Rose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the organization spent its first-round pick on Trent&#8217;s replacement <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walteja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ja&#8217;Kobe Walter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then Toronto took on salary in a trade with the Sacramento Kings that further limited the organization&#8217;s ability to re-sign Trent. If the fact that Toronto hadn&#8217;t already extended Trent wasn&#8217;t a clear enough sign that the Raptors have moved on, the organization&#8217;s offseason maneuvering should be.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the list of available free agents continues to grow thin, the Lakers should take a flier on Trent Jr., a guard\/forward who can both shoot and defend at a high level. He would be a seamless fit as a starter or bench player, and he wouldn\u2019t have to bear much of the offensive load compared to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Spencer Dinwiddie<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veteran <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Dinwiddie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the Lakers off of the post-deadline buyout market last season, and his production left mixed results. In 28 games (4 starts), the LA native averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists on .397\/.389\/.880 splits. He was not productive during the Lakers\u2019 first-round series against the Nuggets, averaging 14 minutes a game and putting up a mere three points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists on 35% shooting from the field. Still, Dinwiddie was a solid solution to their point guard troubles, and had his bright moments, too. His best game as a Laker came on Mar. 24, when he put up 26 points (8\/11 FG, 2\/3 3PT) and five assists, two rebounds, two blocks and a steal in a thrilling 150-145 win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dinwiddie reiterated his desire to rejoin the Lakers during his <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/5\/5\/24149811\/spencer-dinwiddie-lakers-nba-free-agency-return-los-angeles\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exit interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;if the Lakers want me back, I\u2019d love to be back. Everything I said about this being a childhood dream and being able to play in my hometown, parents at every game, stuff like that, you couldn\u2019t imagine anything better. Also playing alongside arguably the greatest player of all-time, right? There\u2019s nothing really better than that.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it stands right now, the team\u2019s true point guards are Russell, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesbr02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronny James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoodsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jalen Hood-Schifino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While some may see the Lakers as being full of facilitators, Vincent and Hood-Schifino are question marks due to season-ending surgeries. Bronny, on the other hand, is a rookie who will <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-rumors-bronny-james-expected-to-spend-majority-of-rookie-season-in-g-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than likely spend time in the G League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Re-signing Dinwiddie is a plausible move by the Lakers. They would keep a familiar face who can both play spot minutes and continue to mentor younger players, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/10\/cam-thomas-grateful-for-spencer-dinwiddie-mentoring-me-a-little-bit\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a role he\u2019s embraced since his time with the Brooklyn Nets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trade Pieces<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Charania and Buha mentioned, the only way to free up those roster spots is by dumping minimum-salary players along with a second-round pick. That significantly limits the players LA could include in trades, but names to watch on that front are <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Reddish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both were in the Lakers\u2019 rotation at various points throughout the season, but their respective salaries may be the easiest ones to move. And although big man <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also a minimum-salary player, the Lakers have <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10127429-lakers-trade-rumors-la-would-prioritize-jaxson-hayes-over-christian-wood-reddish\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown an increased reluctance to trade him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any sort of big trade involving Russell or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on a sailing ship at this point.
