{"id":81452,"date":"2024-06-14T17:16:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T21:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=81452"},"modified":"2024-06-14T17:16:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T21:16:44","slug":"jerry-west-clippers-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/14\/jerry-west-clippers-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Jerry West: Reflecting on the Logo&#8217;s Impact For the Clippers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sadly, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, NBA Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westje01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry West<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/12\/an-ode-nba-icon-jerry-west-the-logo\/\" target=\"_self\">passed away<\/a> at 86.\u00a0 West made a great impact as a player and maybe had even more as an executive.\u00a0 While General Manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, West helped shape the Lakers dynasty of the 1980s.\u00a0 In addition to this,\u00a0West was responsible for trading for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryanko01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kobe Bryant<\/a> and signing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/onealsh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaquille O&#8217;Neal<\/a>.\u00a0 After joining the Memphis Grizzlies for five years, West joined the Golden State Warriors as an executive in 2011. West helped shape the Golden State Warriors dynasty until he joined the Los Angeles Clippers in 2017. Although Jerry West&#8217;s official Clippers title was Consultant, it is clear that Jerry West had a large role in the moves made by the organization.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Jerry West: Reflecting on the Logo&#8217;s Impact For the Clippers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Moving On from Lob City<\/h3>\n<p>The first move impacted by Jerry West was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Paul<\/a>&#8216;s departure from Los Angeles.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2018\/03\/20\/houston-rockets-nba-title\/\" target=\"_self\">The Clippers traded Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets<\/a> in exchange for seven players including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beverpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Beverley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harremo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montrezl Harrell<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willilo02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Williams<\/a>, a 2018 first-round pick, and cash. Harrell and Williams both won Sixth Man of the Year for the Clippers and Beverley became a leader for the team, while the other four players did not impact the team on the court.<\/p>\n<p>The second move made in Jerry West&#8217;s Clippers tenure was trading aging Sixth-Man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Crawford<\/a>, young center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stonedi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diamond Stone<\/a>, and a 2018 first-round draft pick in a three-team trade to the Atlanta Hawks, in which the Clippers received forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gallida01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danilo Gallinari<\/a> from the Denver Nuggets.\u00a0 As a result of this trade, the Clippers added another scoring wing that had experience but was nine years younger.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2018, West traded five-time All-Star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/griffbl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Griffin<\/a> to the Detroit Pistons for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrito02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tobias Harris<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marjabo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boban Marjanovi\u0107<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bradlav01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avery Bradley<\/a>, a 2018 first-round draft pick, and a 2019 second-round draft pick.\u00a0 Griffin was the face of the Clippers for almost a decade, while the Clippers only received role players in return, however, the team added younger pieces and draft picks.\u00a0 The Clippers finished with a 42-40 record, missing the playoffs.<\/p>\n<h3>Building the New Era of Clippers Basketball<\/h3>\n<p>In the 2018 NBA Draft, the Clippers traded the 12th overall pick, which they used to select Michigan State forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miles Bridges<\/a>, and a 2021 second-round draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets for Kentucky guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>. Shai had an immediate impact on the Clippers, playing in all 82 games, starting 73 games, and helping the Clippers to a playoff appearance.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2019, the Clippers traded Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovi\u0107, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scottmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Scott<\/a> to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chandwi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilson Chandler<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shamela01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landry Shamet<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/muscami01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Muscala<\/a>.\u00a0 Mike Muscala was probably the most important piece in this trade, as the Clippers traded him to the Lakers the next day for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/z\/zubaciv01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ivica Zubac<\/a>. Zubac has developed into a core piece for the Clippers, showing intensity and consistency.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2019 NBA draft, the Clippers selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mannte01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terance Mann<\/a> in the second round. Mann has been a great selection for the Clippers, showing versatility on both ends of the floor and stepping up in big moments.<\/p>\n<h3>Jerry West Adds Star Power<\/h3>\n<p>July 2019 was very eventful for Jerry West and the Los Angeles Clippers.\u00a0 At the start of free agency, Finals MVP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kawhi Leonard<\/a> was signed.\u00a0 After this, the Clippers finalized their promise to Leonard by trading <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/04\/15\/thunders-shai-gilgeous-alexander-candid-mvp-chances\/\" target=\"_self\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>, Danilo Gallinari, and seven first-round draft picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul George<\/a>.\u00a0 After a second-round playoff exit in which the Clippers blew a 3-1 lead with their new superstars, they fired head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/riverdo01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doc Rivers<\/a> after seven years in September 2020.\u00a0 As a replacement, the Clippers hired assistant coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/luety01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyronn Lue<\/a>, who was the head coach of the 2016 NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers. In Lue&#8217;s first season at the helm, the Clippers reached the franchise&#8217;s first Western Conference Finals, losing in six games to the Phoenix Suns.<\/p>\n<p>After three disappointing seasons, the Clippers felt the need to make a big move once again.\u00a0 In November of 2023, the Clippers traded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/batumni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicolas Batum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/covinro01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Covington<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrima03.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Morris<\/a>, two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft picks, and cash to the Philadelphia 76ers for former MVP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckepj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">P.J. Tucker<\/a>.\u00a0 The Clippers gave up a lot of depth in this deal, and it showed throughout the course of the season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/12\/an-ode-nba-icon-jerry-west-the-logo\/\" target=\"_self\">Jerry West<\/a> is a champion. Moreover, Jerry West was one of the most influential minds in basketball.
