He has a player option for the second year, meaning that if things don’t go as planned, Gay can opt out and become a free agent again next summer.

Gay averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game last season for the Sacramento Kings. His stat line did improve from the 2015-16 season, but not by much. Gay suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and had surgery to repair it in January. This cost him the remainder of the season, as he played in just 30 games total. The Kings did not make the playoffs, finishing at 32-50 in the Western Conference.

Looking forward, Gay will be a solid contributor on both ends of the floor for San Antonio, as long as he is able to stay focused on the court. He was a key player for the Kings and will continue to be wherever he goes. However, the Spurs will need him to stay healthy in order to contend for a championship in the 2017-18 season. Gay may have taken less money so that he could play for a title contender in San Antonio.

Gay is going into his 9th season in the league, during which he’ll be 31 years old. He played for Sacramento for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he played for the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors.

Check out the LWOS 2017 NBA Free Agency Tracker for all of your NBA free agency coverage, and be sure to follow @LastWordHoops on Twitter to stay up-to-date with the latest NBA news.

Main Photo:

Rudy Gay (L) of the Sacramento Kings (L) handles the ball against Joe Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets during the 2014 NBA Global Games at the MasterCard Center in Beijing on October 15, 2014, CHINA OUT AFP PHOTO (Photo credit should read STR/AFP/Getty Images)

According to reports, Rudy Gay signs with the San Antonio Spurs.
