Between several key decisions and a desire to return to championship glory, here is a deep dive on what to expect of the purple and gold\u2019s summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2024 NBA Off-Season Preview: What\u2019s Next for the Lakers?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Season Recap<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 season began relatively strong, as a 7-6 start bloomed to a 14-9 record, with LA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10100550-lebron-james-named-mvp-for-2023-nba-in-season-tournament-as-lakers-win-championship\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winning the inaugural In-Season Tournament<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind the dominance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their early success wouldn\u2019t last long, however, as the rest of December and beginning of January saw them plummet from 15-10 to 17-19. A bombshell report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/01\/04\/lakers-rumors-darvin-hams-job-security-in-jeopardy\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealing locker room tensions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t help matters at all, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers eventually clawed their way back to get above .500 by the trade deadline (27-25), where LA remained quiet despite the many rumors surrounding Russell and others. They looked like a completely different team afterwards, between the backcourt\u2019s red-hot scoring, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s rise to the starting lineup and Davis\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/03\/11\/anthony-davis-strengthens-dpoy-case-with-historic-performance\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DPOY-worthy rim protection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At 36-30, fans hoped the Lakers could pull off another midseason comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team went <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=lakers+record+from+march+11%2C+2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11-5 to finish the season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it still wasn\u2019t enough to guarantee them a playoff spot. Nearly all of the aforementioned players\u2014except for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/28\/lakers-rumors-polarizing-player-eyeing-return-in-free-agency-taurean-prince\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prince<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014have player options they must decide on. Backup big man <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/07\/key-lakers-free-agent-decides-on-player-option-christian-wood\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already committed to returning to LA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while defensive stopper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/jarred-vanderbilt-extension-lakers-2023-24\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed a four-year extension last September<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Giles, Castleton, and Mays are LA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2023\/08\/hoops-rumors-glossary-two-way-contract.html#:~:text=A%20player%20also%20can&#039;t,contract%20with%20the%20same%20team.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-way<\/a> signees. Both Giles and Mays&#8212;restricted free agents&#8212;will be entering their fourth seasons, rendering them ineligible for another two-way contract. The rookie big man Castleton, however, could still return on the same deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Lakers, retaining LeBron is priority #1, plain and simple. Recent reports suggest that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatMcAfeeShow\/status\/1775216212626030925\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he would like to play at least a couple more seasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the league, and many would prefer that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5284376\/2024\/02\/18\/lebron-james-future-nba-lakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he retires as a Laker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both are still possible, but the Lakers must construct a roster that James wants to return to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of LA\u2019s pending free agents have all earned healthy amounts of praise and skepticism from the Laker Faithful. Though there\u2019s a case for all of them to return, some players are worth keeping over others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers could reasonably part with Reddish and Hayes, who could earn better opportunities elsewhere. Russell has been an integral part of the Lakers\u2019 success, and it would be difficult to replace him if he leaves. Prince, a versatile veteran, had his ups and downs. But if he re-signs at the right price, he would solidify the Lakers&#8217; wing depth. The same goes for <a href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/spencer-dinwiddie-believes-he-fulfilled-role-with-lakers-during-2023-24-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Dinwiddie<\/a>, who joined his hometown team via the buyout market and provided some stability at the point guard slot. And many believe Christie didn&#8217;t get a fair chance under Ham. As he demonstrated this year, the 21-year-old holds a ton of potential that the next head coach should tap into.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Trade Pieces<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoodsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jalen Hood-Schifino<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers remain at the center of blockbuster trade talks, and getting great talent will require giving up some as well. Reaves and Hachimura are still under contract and could be traded to acquire any of LA\u2019s dream targets (more on them later). Making such a deal\u2014along with some of their three tradable first-round picks\u2014will require moving one or both of them in a significant package.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent and Hood-Schifino have been underwhelming guards for various reasons, and the team should try and move on from them if possible. Fans hoped Vincent would turn into a steady backup facilitator and potential sixth man. However, knee problems\u2014which eventually led to surgery\u2014kept him out most of the season, and he struggled in the minutes he had on the court. Hood-Schifino showed plenty of promise as a first-round talent. Still, he was played off the floor but soon found his footing in the G League. He later underwent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/3\/21\/24108169\/jalen-hood-schifino-lakers-injury-report-back-lumbar-microdiscectomy-surgery\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back surgery in March<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent\u2019s $11 million salary may be enough to net one or two bench players plus draft capital. Hood-Schifino is on minimum deal that can be added to any trade if necessary. Regardless, the Lakers have options for improvement, whether it&#8217;s a major trade or some minor ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Realistic Offseason Targets<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4>Trade Targets<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donovan Mitchell<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trae Young<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dejounte Murray<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikal Bridges<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is plenty of discourse surrounding LA\u2019s three big targets and how they could help the team next season. A third star would take the load off of James\u2014in what will be his 22nd season\u2014and be a huge help for Davis, whose stellar production saved the Lakers many times this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitchell, Young, and Murray all have strong cases for joining the Lakers. Any of their playing styles would fit this team like a glove. As it stands right now, Mitchell is the Lakers\u2019 leading candidate, and rightfully so.
