Let\u2019s dive into Brown\u2019s elevated play and rise in stardom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Has Jaylen Brown Closed The Gap Between Him and Tatum?<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Playoffs So Far\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the playoffs, Brown is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/jaylen-brown-playoff-stats-2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">averaging<\/a> 24.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on .544,\/365\/.635 shooting splits. Tatum is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/tatum-playoff-stats-2024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">averaging<\/a> 25.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">5.6 assists on .436\/.266\/.867 shooting splits. Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02\/gamelog\/2024#pgl_basic_playoffs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brown<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01\/gamelog-playoffs\/#95-106-sum:pgl_basic_playoffs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tatum<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">both<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have three 30-plus point games in the playoffs. However, Brown\u2019s scoring has been far more efficient in these games\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">averaging<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a057 percent from the field and shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. Whereas Tatum has averaged 44 percent from the field while shooting 25 percent from three in these games. Notably, Tatum has only had two games in the playoffs when he\u2019s shot over 50 percent from the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In game two against the Pacers last night\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brown<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0had a stellar 40-point performance\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">leading<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the Celtics to a 16-point win. In game\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Tatum had a 36-point and 12-rebound outing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/jayson-tatum-passes-larry-bird-014724060.html#:~:text=They%20started%20their%20series%20against,win%2C%20including%2010%20in%20OT.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">including<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a010 points in overtime. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it was Brown who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0saved the day and stole the show for the Celtics\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hitting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a game-tying corner three to force overtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jaylen Brown hits INSANE 3 to force OT in Game 1 vs Pacers \ud83d\ude31\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gv6oj3aUyNk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Scoring\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brown\u2019s scoring and shooting efficiency have made him the better player in the playoffs\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">so far<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the playoffs<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Brown is shooting 36 percent from three compared to Tatum\u2019s 26 percent.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0For their careers, they have posted very similar three-point shooting numbers\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">however<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, if this trend\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">continues<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0it could change\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the way<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0we look at these two players.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the first time since Tatum\u2019s rookie year,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Brown is posting a higher usage rate than him.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0In the playoffs, Brown has a 28.8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1627759\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">usage rate<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1628369\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tatum<\/a> has a 27.7\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">giving<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Brown the slight edge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0paired with Tatum\u2019s season-long struggles in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/clutch-traditional?CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*Tatum&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">clutch<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will cause the Celtics to turn to Brown more down the stretch of close games.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Furthermore,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Brown is shooting 73 percent at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1627759\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rim<\/a> compared to Tatum\u2019s still\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very solid<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1628369\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">64 percent<\/a>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1627759\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brown<\/a> is shooting 46 percent on shots within five to nine feet of the rim\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">whereas<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1628369\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tatum<\/a> is shooting just 26 percent from this range. Ultimately, Brown has been noticeably more of an aggressive and effective creator than Tatum in the playoffs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two-Way Abilities\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another that has to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be mentioned<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with these stars is their defensive abilities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Throughout their careers and in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">playoffs<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">both players have been borderline elite defenders<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0However, the two have taken on different roles, especially during this playoff run. Brown tends to guard more perimeter players\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">complementing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jrue Holiday<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derrick White<\/a> as an elite point-of-attack defender. Whereas Tatum guards more interior\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">players<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0this has been\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">particularly helpful<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/18\/important-kristaps-porzingis-injury-update\/\" target=\"_self\">absence<\/a> of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Kristaps Porzingis<\/a>. Brown\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/defense-dash-overall?CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*Jaylen%20Brown\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defensive field goal percentage<\/a> of 49.6 is slightly better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/defense-dash-overall?CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*Tatu\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tatum\u2019s<\/a> 52.1\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Brown has defended slightly more shot attempts. Overall, both players have provided the Celtics with elite defense in the playoffs\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0you\u2019re splitting hairs picking one over the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where Tatum Still Has The Advantage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite some of his offensive\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">struggles<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Tatum has\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">still<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0made a well-rounded impact and helped contribute to winning in\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0way this playoffs.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Tatum\u2019s overall\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">impact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is highlighted by his 10.2 rebounds a game and 5.6 assists per game. Tatum is also posting an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1627759\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assist percentage<\/a> of 21.6 while Brown is posting a 13.2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1627759\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assist percentage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Much like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0his interior defense, his rebounding has been vital to the Celtics\u2019 success without Porzingis. While much of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kkYXs4T8L8k\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media coverage<\/a> has focused on Tatum\u2019s shooting\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">struggles<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0he has been given little credit for his stellar all-around play. Another piece that\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">must be considered<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is that Tatum has drawn the more difficult matchup in each series. Part of Brown\u2019s exceptional play has been Tatum\u2019s willingness to let Brown dominate a weaker matchup. Tatum also gets to the line more than Brown during the playoffs, he is averaging 8.2 free attempts compared to Brown&#8217;s 5.3 attempts while shooting over 20 percent higher than Brown at the line. Additionally, Brown doesn\u2019t impact the game at the same level as a rebounder or\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">playmaker<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0even though he has\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">improved greatly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in those areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Last Word<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ultimately, it shouldn\u2019t matter who the best player is to the Celtics as long as they keep winning. Having two elite stars is a rare luxury and it\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">only<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0makes the Celtics more dangerous. Nevertheless, it\u2019s interesting to follow\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0there\u2019s no doubt Brown has closed the gap significantly between him and Tatum. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For a few years, Tatum has been considered a consensus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/38633041\/nbarank-2023-player-rankings-2023-24-10-1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top-ten<\/a>-level player. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s unfair to say he has completely fallen out of this group although some players such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a> have certainly surpassed him this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, Brown has never been closer to this class of elite players. He is now a clear top-15-level player maybe even higher. For the past few years, Brown has been considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/38625043\/nbarank-2023-player-rankings-2023-24-50-11\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top 25<\/a> player but not a top 15. Notably, Tatum recently was named to the first-team All-NBA\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Brown didn\u2019t make an All-NBA team.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In my eyes, Brown\u2019s omission was glaring and speaks to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">different perceptions the media has<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0about the two stars.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0However, a possible Eastern Conference Finals MVP and even a Finals MVP is in play for Brown. Winning one or both of these awards would greatly change the perceptions around the two stars.
