Only making the conference finals once back in 2021. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While injuries have played a significant role in the Clippers&#8217; playoff shortcomings, there\u2019s no denying their playoff disappointments have been frequent. With another flameout in 2024, L.A.\u2019s future is in serious question. Their superstars have been in trade talks since the moment the clock hit all zeros in their first-round matchup against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DAL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Mavericks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Los Angeles Clippers: Former NBA All-Star Urges to Blow It Up<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>The Los Angeles Clippers Had Dynastic Expectations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, a new era was born in Los Angeles, as the Clippers acquired both Leonard and George in the off-season.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few years after their Lob City group was broken up, the Clippers were now not only in title contention but were the preseason title favorite with +425 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2020_preseason_odds.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">odds<\/a> to win the 2020 NBA championship.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, it looked amazing. The Clippers were as good as advertised with their new duo. When Leonard and George played together during the 2019-20 regular season, L.A. was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=clippers+record+with+kawhi+and+paul+george+2019-20\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">27-10<\/a>. The following season, Leonard and George had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=clippers+record+with+kawhi+and+paul+george+2020-21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">32-11<\/a> record when they played together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in 2021, Leonard went down with a torn ACL in the middle of L.A.\u2019s playoff run. He missed the entire 2021-22 season. In the 2023 and 2024 postseasons, Leonard was basically a no-show: he suited up for just two games in each series as he was battling injuries both years. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The L.A. Clippers are in an interesting position. They just finished a season where they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dealt with a multitude of changes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having to integrate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Harden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into their rotation just a few games into the season all while managing the health of their star players who were beginning to hit the age wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Time to Trade Their Superstars?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After another quick playoff exit, though, the Clippers might not be satisfied with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/04\/los-angeles-clippers-expected-to-make-strong-bids-to-keep-two-of-their-stars\/\" target=\"_self\">running back the roster in 2024-25<\/a>. Free agency may force some changes anyway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With George likely entering free agency this off-season, the Clippers have some serious decisions to make. That\u2019s not to mention <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckepj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PJ Tucker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($11.5 million) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell Westbrook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($4 million) who also have player options. Tucker will opt in while Westbrook could go either way. Currently, the Clippers are looking at a $172 million luxury tax hole and are approaching the first apron tax penalty.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leaves LA limited to minimum contracts this summer. Any reasonable route to the $12.9 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to former NBA superstar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arenagi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert Arenas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, L.A. trying to salvage their current situation is a risk <a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/nba\/la-clippers\/all-clippers\/news\/ex-nba-superstar-on-paul-george-and-kawhi-leonard-era\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not worth taking<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe done with it, let\u2019s move on,\u201d Arenas said of the Clippers roster. \u201cWe good. Let\u2019s get some new players in here. Let\u2019s freshen it up. That\u2019s what I mean. We\u2019re done with this experiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most franchises, \u00a0spending five or six seasons with the same core of stars is enough to decide between pass or fail. For the Clippers, they may be the most disappointing team of the last five years.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Clippers introducing their new arena soon, owner Steve Ballmer has said in the past that the franchise wants to kick off their new home with a splash.
