{"id":77089,"date":"2024-05-11T16:26:01","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T20:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=77089"},"modified":"2024-05-11T16:26:01","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T20:26:01","slug":"lakers-hope-to-accomplish-two-goals-by-draft-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/11\/lakers-hope-to-accomplish-two-goals-by-draft-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Lakers Hope to Accomplish Two Goals by Draft Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/11\/nba-free-agency-should-the-lakers-pursue-veteran-big-man-jonas-valanciunas\/\" target=\"_self\">Lakers<\/a> work through the beginning of the offseason, they reportedly have two clear goals to complete by the 2024 NBA Draft.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Hope to Accomplish Two Goals by Draft Night<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Goal #1: Hire New Head Coach<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumors have spiraled over who exactly the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/11\/lakers-set-to-interview-4-head-coach-candidates\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers\u2019 next head coach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be. However, despite the laundry list of candidates, they\u2019re prioritizing experience in their search. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E_Ljr0xG4iI?si=zGegvNpSmMhmfmnZ\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Jovan Buha noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the team is hoping to enter the draft with a decision already made, with that new hire playing a role in the team\u2019s selections:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom what I\u2019ve been told, the Lakers\u2019 plan is to have a coach in place by the NBA Draft, which is June 26th\u2026You want a coach who is going to be present during those discussions, that planning, and that whole process. The Lakers\u2019 plan is to have someone in place by then. That gives them about six and a half, seven weeks to figure this out.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that the Lakers will be monitoring the statuses of their top two candidates\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/04\/clippers-throw-wrench-lakers-ty-lue-plan\/\" target=\"_self\">Clippers head coach Ty Lue<\/a> and former-player-turned-broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.J. Redick<\/a>\u2014as well as some lead assistants who are still coaching in the playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the Lakers\u2019 timeline growing more concrete, expect the process to last as long as Buha mentioned, with an announcement coming sooner rather than later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Goal #2: Trade Their First-Round Pick<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the moves the Lakers\u2019 new coach will have to help with is choosing whether to part with LA\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/04\/23\/2024-nba-draft-lakers-place-in-first-round-revealed\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-round pick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Buha reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E_Ljr0xG4iI?si=E-wb1nLPganLJUWG&amp;t=42\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the team intends to package pick #17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a trade for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LALPrime\/status\/1788402707495272764\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either a third star or role player<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, the Lakers are going to look to move that #17 pick on draft night. It will be the first time they could use all three of their tradable first-round picks, and it\u2019s a prime opportunity for them to potentially get either a third star or improve the roster by attaching one, or two, or three of those picks alongside players under contract to upgrade the starting lineup or the bench.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My understanding is that they are going to be aggressive, and they\u2019re going to be active, and they\u2019re going to try and use that [first-round pick].\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buha said the Lakers tried doing the same thing last year before selecting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoodsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jalen Hood-Schifino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the 17th pick in the 2023 Draft. The point guard was underwhelming in his rookie season, and going forward, the Lakers may choose to pursue experienced players instead of developing young talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time around, the Lakers could target a third star to help lead LA as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s career winds down, with names such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trae Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dejounte Murray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donovan Mitchell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being mentioned the most. All of them have clear pros and cons when it comes to possibly joining the Lakers. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers\/status\/1786459157002121295\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM Rob Pelinka has remained committed<\/a> to bringing winning basketball back to the organization.
