This era of players demanding trades to one single team has seen the player get their way, for the most part. Multiple stars banding together to form big threes or fours have also witnessed a reaping of the sowing in a select handful of players wanting to play together. However, one could argue just how much winning has resulted in those player’s group efforts.

What makes a player want to sign with this team or that team? What it isn’t, though, is non-existent. The aura of the Miami Heat is its stronghold, one looming factor that designates them as a highly desired NBA organization to play for. Pat Riley has high expectations for his players. He expects an attitude of toughness and resilience, coupled with a certain percentage of body fat that rests at about 10% or under for each player.

The great Hall of Fame Center and Miami Heat champion Shaquille O’Neal has even spoken on this matter. He went on record in his book Shaq Uncut, saying that if he didn’t reach his required 13% body fat percentage, he would be subjected to a $1,000 fine. Is this demand extreme? Or is it a demand for self-discipline and commitment to the locker room and the game of basketball? Riley once described this body weight and fat percentage goal as a driving force for each player to be in world-class shape and nothing less. The Miami Heat are an organization that expects and demands your absolute best, physically and mentally. This is why they garner league-wide respect amongst players, coaches, media pundits, and sports talk show panels.

One of the League’s Best Coaches Leads the Way

Miami’s head coach, Erik Spoelstra, is another reason players want to play in South Beach.
