Discovery Inc. expires on Monday, April 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0The companies have been in partnership for years. Warner\u2019s relationship with the NBA stretches back to 1984, and Disney has broadcasted games on ESPN and ABC since 2002. Disney also hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/board-of-governors-approves-nba-return-official-release\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 NBA playoffs<\/a> on the company\u2019s property in Orlando during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sherman, the league is looking to double the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/2014\/10\/06\/new-nba-tv-deal-worth-24-billion\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine-year $24 billion deal<\/a> the parties reached in 2014, which enabled significant growth for the league during the ensuing seasons. Aside from the seasons impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBA revenue has increased every year since the deal. With the league breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/193467\/total-league-revenue-of-the-nba-since-2005\/#:~:text=During%20the%202022%2F23%20season,dollars%20from%20the%20previous%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$10.5 billion<\/a> during the 2022-2023 season.<\/p>\n<h2>NBA Broadcasting Rights: Exclusive Negotiating Period Ending Soon<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Why the change?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With cable networks continuing to fade into obsolescence and linear television viewership in the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2023\/streaming-grabs-a-record-38-7-of-total-tv-usage-in-july-with-acquired-titles-outpacing-new-originals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">below 50%<\/a>, professional sports leagues are increasingly transitioning their live-broadcasted and pre-recorded media to streaming services.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix, fresh off the $5 billion acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/netflix-stream-wwe-raw-2025-2024-01-23\/#:~:text=Jan%2023%20(Reuters)%20%2D%20Netflix,Entertainment&#039;s%20Raw%20from%20January%202025.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WWE\u2019s<\/a> live event broadcasts and streaming library, Amazon, holders of the rights to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/18\/nfl-media-rights-deal-2023-2033-amazon-gets-exclusive-thursday-night.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFL\u2019s &#8220;Thursday Night Football\u201d<\/a> broadcasts, Google, the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/dec\/23\/youtube-nfl-deal-turn-up-heat-battle-for-sports-rights\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFL Sunday Ticket<\/a> on YouTube since 2022, Apple, presenters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2024\/03\/friday-night-baseball-returns-to-apple-tv-plus-on-march-29\/#:~:text=Apple%20and%20Major%20League%20Baseball,with%20no%20local%20broadcast%20restrictions.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLB\u2019s \u201cFriday Night Baseball\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 doubleheaders, and NBCUniversal, providers of \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/soccer-entertainment-sports-arts-and-entertainment-premier-league-a3300cd2352fbd0a20a910d80db7bd8c\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Premier League<\/a> matches since 2013, have all expressed interest in striking a deal with the NBA.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike this year, the association&#8217;s last broadcasting deals with Disney and Warner Bros. were agreed to months prior to the exclusive bargaining window deadline. Setting the table for a payroll boom for NBA players following the 2016 collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n<p>TV deals have major implications for league talents.\u00a0At the time of the TV deal\u2019s signing, the average NBA player made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/675120\/average-sports-salaries-by-league\/#:~:text=NBA%20salaries%20have%20tremendously%20increased,U.S.%20dollars%20in%202015%2F16.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$4.46 million<\/a> yearly. The highest player in the league was Los Angeles Lakers star\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryanko01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kobe Bryant<\/a>\u00a0earning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/salaries\/_\/year\/2016\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$25 million<\/a> per season. As of last season, the average player&#8217;s salary has more than doubled, now standing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1120680\/annual-salaries-nba-wnba\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over $10 million<\/a>, while Golden State Warriors point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steph Curry<\/a> led the association with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/salaries\/_\/year\/2023\/seasontype\/5\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$48 million<\/a> annual salary.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s next?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although the exclusive window seems destined to close without a deal materializing, conversations between the NBA, Disney, and Warner Bros. will continue after negotiations are opened to other companies.
