He played in just 44 games during the 2014-15 season after a blood clot was found in his lungs. He then played 53 games in 2015-16 and missed the playoffs after another was found in his calf. Although Bosh was still under contract with the Heat this year, he did not travel with the team nor play in any games. He was made aware that this was most likely a career-ending condition the second time around.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald mentions that although the discussion of retirement has loomed around Bosh for close to two years, he has not ruled out returning. Even if Bosh does decide to eventually sign with another team, the Heat’s cap will still be cleared of the $52.1 million remaining on his contract according to the agreement.

Looking Ahead

This is semi-good news for the Heat, depending on how you look at it. Bosh contributed greatly to the Heat when he was healthy. However, they will now have more space to actively pursue another possible addition or two. Dion Waiters has expressed great interest in re-signing with the Heat already. Justise Winslow will be ready to go after playing only 18 games this season due to injury.

After coming up just short of the playoffs, this offseason may be crucial to finding just the right pieces to form this puzzle. The team and fans alike hope to continue the success they displayed in the second half of the 2016-17 season come October.

This agreement involves the union, Miami Heat, NBA, and Bosh and is expected to be officially announced before the beginning of free agency on July 1.

Main Photo

MIAMI, FL – MAY 14: Chris Bosh #1 of the Miami Heat looks on before a game against the Brooklyn Nets in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the 2014 NBA playoffs at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida on May 14, 2014.
