Times<\/a> quoted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/crime-law-justice\/law-enforcement\/l.a.-county-sheriffs-department-ORGOV000937-topic.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles County Sheriff<\/a>\u2019s Department Sgt. Rick Mejia as saying that\u00a0two men walked up to Roy and a group of people he was with in the 2000 block of North Nestor Avenue in Compton\u00a0around 9 p.m. Saturday and opened fire for \u201cno apparent reason.\u201d\u00a0 No arrests have been made.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/playoffs\/2017\/05\/03\/former-trail-blazer-brandon-roy-shot-leg-los-angeles\/101233026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Today\u00a0<\/a>&#8220;a person with knowledge of the situation&#8221; who wished to remain anonymous said Roy was shielding young people from gunfire at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many others, we\u2019re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California,\u201d the Trail Blazers said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nba.com\/blazers\/team-statement-reports-shooting-injury-suffered-former-trail-blazers-great-brandon-roy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> on May 3. \u201cAccording to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roy, who attended the University of Washington,\u00a0was the sixth pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. He won the NBA\u2019s Rookie of The Year award in 2007 and was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team three years in a row.\u00a0A 6-6 shooting guard, Roy averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game during his career.<\/p>\n<p>Roy spent five years with the Blazers before<a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/7335092\/brandon-roy-portland-trail-blazers-retire-due-knees\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> retiring <\/a>in 2011 due to chronic knee injuries. He attempted a comeback in 2012, signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves.\u00a0 The comeback was brief, however.\u00a0Roy&#8217;s\u00a0persistent knee problems forced him to retire again\u00a0after five games.<\/p>\n<p>Roy now coaches the men\u2019s basketball team at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/19299166\/former-nba-all-star-guard-brandon-roy-injured-california-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN<\/a>.
