They sure don\u2019t want to trade Reaves and his good contract or trade three players for one like they did with Westbrook. They believe in the formula they have, which is a cadre of long defenders supporting future Hall of Famers. Yes, they can\u2019t shoot and it\u2019s a problem. Yes, their defense has fallen off and it\u2019s a problem. But if they end up doing something significant, it will probably be kicking and screaming. Keep that in mind when evaluating your visits to the trade machine.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 19-19 and ninth in the West, it&#8217;s no secret the Lakers need to upgrade through trades. While searching for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/12\/28\/nba-trade-rumors-lakers-could-pursue-two-nets-forwards\/\" target=\"_self\">perfect fit<\/a>, several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/12\/26\/nba-trade-rumors-lakers-could-target-hawks-guard-dejounte-murray\/\" target=\"_self\">big names<\/a> have come up\u2014namely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lavinza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach LaVine<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dejounte Murray<\/strong><\/a>. Now, another key player could enter the conversation, and this time, the luck might be in the Lakers&#8217; favor: Hornets guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roziete01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Terry Rozier<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Rumors: Could LA Trade for Hornets Star Guard?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Background<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rozier\u2019s name came up in The Athletic\u2019s piece <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5190417\/2024\/01\/11\/nba-trade-deadline-needs-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussing the biggest need for every team at the 2024 Trade Deadline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Buha wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers have several needs, but the buzz around the organization is that offense \u2014 particularly 3-point shooting and downhill athleticism \u2014 are the areas they hope to address within the next month. That could come in the form of a splashy trade for Zach LaVine or Dejounte Murray, or a smaller move for a role player like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dorian Finney-Smith<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Royce O\u2019Neale or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terry Rozier<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rozier has played 24 games for Charlotte this season, and he\u2019s been on an offensive tear in the process. He is averaging career-highs in points (24.3) and assists (seven) on 46% shooting from the field and 37% from three. He has scored at least 30 points six times this year, including a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LpZdg4bDyGA?si=TidpBEUPEWrhVheY\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season-high 42<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (14\/22 FG, 8\/12 3PT) against the Suns on Dec. 29. Rozier has been just as effective stopping the ball. He&#8217;s averaging 1.1 steals per game and making key contributions despite the Hornets\u2019 horrid defense (28th in the NBA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veteran guard\u2019s ability to win should not be forgotten, either. Rozier was a key part of the 2018 Celtics squad that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. In 19 games, he put up 16.5 points and 5.7 assists on .406\/.347\/.821 splits. Since then, he struggled in the 2019 playoffs and has been stuck on a rebuilding Charlotte squad. However, he has grown as a player and will help a contender immediately. The 8-26 Hornets, by contrast, are way outside of the playoff picture. His presence would take most of the ball-handling pressure away from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Austin Reaves<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he\u2019d give LA another bona fide bucket-getter next to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?hint=&amp;search=Anthony+Davis&amp;pid=davisan02&amp;idx=bbr__players\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The fact that he\u2019s on a three-year, $56.7 million deal\u2014less expensive than LaVine\u2019s and shorter than Murray\u2019s\u2014adds to his case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for what a deal could look like, the Lakers would need to ship off <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a minimum-salary player (e.g. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaxson Hayes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/22932237\/lakers-future-nba-draft-picks-trades-swaps#:~:text=The%20Lakers%20own%20their%20first,part%20of%20the%20Hachimura%20trade.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2029 first-round pick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to match Rozier\u2019s $23 million salary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell has adjusted well to his role off the bench. But despite his success in LA\u2019s recent wins, he has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanWoikeSports\/status\/1744973800394162460\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declined to speak to the media<\/a> afterwards, which is notable amid the trade speculation around him. Hayes would make sense in this deal, given <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Wood<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s success as AD&#8217;s backup and Charlotte&#8217;s need for bigs. There\u2019s also a chance that LA makes another run at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/1745211981496529080\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently-waived<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/biyombi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bismack Biyombo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose rebounding and defense was on full display for Memphis. Trading Hayes and his two-year contract makes more sense than waiving him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there\u2019s the question of LA\u2019s draft capital (or lack thereof). They only have one tradable first-round pick this season compared to three they could move during the 2024 Draft. Attaching it to a trade like this works better than scrambling for picks to get someone like LaVine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers may be better off going for smaller trades to improve the roster, emphasizing \u201cfit\u201d over \u201cname\u201d without sacrificing their depth.
