{"id":60376,"date":"2023-12-30T12:03:12","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T17:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=60376"},"modified":"2023-12-30T12:03:12","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T17:03:12","slug":"lu-dort-has-finally-found-a-consistent-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/12\/30\/lu-dort-has-finally-found-a-consistent-role\/","title":{"rendered":"Lu Dort Has Finally Found a Consistent Role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dortlu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-12-30_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luguentz Dort<\/a><\/strong>, the Oklahoma City Thunder&#8217;s Canadian defensive ace, has seen an offensive surge 29 games into the season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/11\/22\/okc-thunder-booming\/\" target=\"_self\">Thunder<\/a> began their rebuild in 2020, they needed to know how Dort would develop. He just had the playoff series of his life in the bubble against the Houston Rockets, making life very difficult for superstar guard <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-12-30_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a><\/strong>, and he had 30 points in a losing effort in Game 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were many ups and downs during these three years, from 2020-23. He received plenty of on-ball reps, which increased his points each season, but the effectiveness and efficiency were not there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dort had very noticeable hot and cold stretches from the three-point line and was never viewed as a good shooter, although he took a high volume of three-point attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fan base was starting to grow very frustrated with Dort. While his defensive production remained high, he hijacked and stalled the offense many times. A pull-up three in transition here and an off-the-dribble contested mid-range pull-up there, and his finishing around the rim was suspect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was the talk of many trades every summer and offseason, but with the Thunder at 21-9 this season, we now have the ideal version of Dort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lu Dort Has Finally Found a Consistent Role<\/h2>\n<h3>Dort Is Having a Career Year Thus Far<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dort is averaging 10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while shooting 45.5% from the field and 41.3% from three, both career highs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some other notable stats and observations are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rim numbers are up: 59.7%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An improved in-between game<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Averaging under one turnover per game<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lowest usage rate\/FGA since rookie season<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Maintaining defensive value<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career high 60.7% true shooting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s also shooting a career-high 45.1% on above-the-break threes (37\/82)\u00a0 and 34.1% on corner threes (15\/44).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s still too early to know how sustainable this is. While his shooting will likely cool off a bit, even if he goes down to 37-38% from three, this is the best you could expect from Dort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Dort Is Still Elite on the Defensive End<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dort\u2019s defense is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vital<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to this Thunder team and its identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a league where superstars get theirs every single game, Dort is a limiter. A chest-up here, an offensive foul drew there; bit by bit, Dort can whittle down even the league\u2019s best offensive engines. By the end of games, he\u2019s typically helped Oklahoma City a few possessions and has put himself in a position to make defensive plays in crunch time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Head coach Mark Daigneault had this to say about Dort\u2019s competitiveness on the defensive end:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s just a dog competitively. Guys hit big shots, and they make faces where they\u2019re like reacting to the shot they just hit. When he lined up on Curry on that last possession, he kinda has that on defense\u2026 He loves that moment.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffice it to say, Dort\u2019s nightmarish on-ball defense and his solid shooting so far have been a good thing for the Thunder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for all the talk of how tradeable Dort\u2019s contract will be for OKC, if and when the time comes \u2014 with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgch01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-12-30_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chet Holmgren<\/a><\/strong> set to protect the rim for the foreseeable future \u2014 he feels like a mainstay and necessity in the Thunder lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luguentz Dort, the Oklahoma City Thunder&#8217;s Canadian defensive ace, has seen an offensive surge 29 games into the season.
