Specifically, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wembavi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Wembanyama<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgch01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chet Holmgren<\/a><\/strong> have dominated the headlines. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompau01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ausar Thompson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/millebr02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Miller<\/a><\/strong> have also created some of their own. However, one of the best rookies has largely flown under the radar amongst all this: Holmgren\u2019s Oklahoma City Thunder teammate, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wallaca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cason Wallace<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 14 games, Wallace has earned a permanent spot in the rotation thanks to his high shooting prowess and defensive upside. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He&#8217;s been the one to close games and play down the stretch over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/giddejo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Giddey<\/a><\/strong> in many closer Thunder games this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cason Wallace Is Not Your Average NBA Rookie<\/h2>\n<h3>Early Signs of Positive Defensive Impact<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you mention the words rookie and Thunder, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/10\/21\/nba-all-rookie-team-future-superstars\/\" target=\"_self\">Holmgren <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the name that pops into everyone\u2019s head. But Wallace has been solid in his early career and has been trusted to defend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Curry<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Klay Thompson<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dejounte Murray<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trae Young<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donovan Mitchell<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a> <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missed a game due to a knee injury, coach Mark Daigneault turned to Wallace to start in his place. We all expected the gangly Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick, to be good immediately, but look out for the Thunder\u2019s other rookie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Daigneault has been very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/thunder\/news\/driveanddish-231122\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complimentary<\/a> of the former Kentucky guard in his young career, constantly praising his defensive effort. \u201cTrust him on anybody, even this short into his career. He doesn\u2019t play with his tuxedo on; he\u2019s a grimy, gritty player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Incredible Efficiency on All Three Levels<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most impressive thing about Wallace\u2019s start is his incredible efficiency to start the season. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s early, but here\u2019s the list of the most efficient rookies on catch-and-shoot jumpers (who have played more than two games and average over one shot attempt):<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cason Wallace (1.6 FGA, 76.1 EFG%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Chet Holmgren (3.7 FGA, 74 EFG%)<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sassema01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Sasser<\/a><\/strong> (1.9 FGA, 67.9 EFG%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallace has immediately alleviated some of those concerns for a team that came into this season with concerns about their lack of three-point threats. Wallace is shooting above 50% from deep this season, and the Thunder have the best three-point percentage in the league (41%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wallace\u2019s efficiency applies to his three-point scoring and what he can do inside the line. Overall, he\u2019s notched a wildly impressive mark of 72.7% true shooting while averaging 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game.<\/p>\n<h3>Cason Wallace: The Perfect Role Player<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallace is the perfect role player. He fits in any lineup, defends, and does all the little things that add up to winning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through 14 games, Wallace has excelled in his role with the Thunder. Playing alongside on-ball creators like Gilgeous-Alexander and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willija06.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-11-21_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Williams<\/a><\/strong>, the former Kentucky guard has keyed into an off-ball role. He finishes plays off the catch by shooting triples or attacking a recovering defense.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallace sees less usage due to the amount of preexisting talent on the team, but he has been able to find his role and play it at a very high level.
