{"id":58087,"date":"2023-11-03T10:30:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T14:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=58087"},"modified":"2023-11-02T23:39:51","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T03:39:51","slug":"the-lakers-newest-experiment-go-big-or-go-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/11\/03\/the-lakers-newest-experiment-go-big-or-go-home\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lakers&#8217; Newest Experiment: Go Big or Go Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among all of the talking points from the Lakers\u2019 thrilling overtime win against the Clippers was a brand new lineup debuted by Darvin Ham. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Austin Reaves<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Max Christie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared the backcourt, while all three of LA\u2019s bigs\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaxson Hayes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Wood<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014held down the fort up front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I p<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/10\/27\/four-expectations-for-the-2023-24-los-angeles-lakers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviously wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how two-big lineups with Wood and Davis were beginning to give LA some success, but a combination with all three Lakers centers? No one saw that coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How well did Ham\u2019s experiment work out, and could we see more of it in the future?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Lakers&#8217; Newest Experiment: Go Big or Go Home<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>The Group\u2019s Performance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were obvious advantages with LA going big\u2014particularly in the areas of rebounding and defense\u2014but the numbers back up just how well they performed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some very small sample size lineup data<\/p>\n<p>LeBron\/Wood &#8211; 49 min, +56.7 net rating<br \/>Davis\/Wood &#8211; 52 min, +29.8 net rating<br \/>LeBron\/Davis\/Wood &#8211; 44 min, +63.7 net rating<br \/>Davis\/Wood\/Hayes &#8211; 4 min, +116.7 net rating<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jacob Rude (@JacobRude) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JacobRude\/status\/1720121550739791962?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">November 2, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the four minutes they played together, Davis, Wood and Hayes combined for 15 points and ten rebounds while shooting 4\/10 from the field. They also had a plus-minus of +10 in their time together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the trio collected 71% of the team\u2019s rebounds (including 75% of their defensive boards) and held a true shooting percentage of 59%. They had bright moments that didn\u2019t reflect on the stat sheet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2023\/11\/2\/23944013\/lakers-darvin-ham-anthony-davis-christian-wood-jaxson-hayes-clippers-boxscore-recap\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as Ham noted in his postgame presser<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and ultimately allowed LA to carry the momentum into the final frame:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athletic ability. The length. The size. Their ability to move their feet. It also allowed us to finish the quarter without having to rush Bron back into the game. That three-man lineup across the front line, these guys take up a lot of space defensively, they all have great hands, they all get off the floor and block shots so anything at the rebound is going to be highly contested and they all rebound.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on their performance, there\u2019s reason to believe that this unique lineup isn\u2019t going to be a one-game wonder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Big Trio\u2019s Sustainability Going Forward<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that the Lakers deployed this lineup without half of their regular rotation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/princta02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Taurean Prince<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014LA\u2019s original starter\u2014was a precautionary late scratch due to a sore ankle. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Gabe Vincent<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was out with a knee injury&#8212;and will now miss two weeks with a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcten\/status\/1720282441901109567\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">left knee effusion<\/a>. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rui Hachimura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missed a second straight game with an eye contusion. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jarred Vanderbilt<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to deal with a heel contusion, which will keep him out for the first two weeks of the season. Once all of them come back, the odds of this big lineup being back on the floor could shrink. However, it brings forth an important lesson and priority for the Lakers: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/11\/03\/the-best-lineup-for-the-los-angeles-lakers-to-win-it-all\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability to play big<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Western Conference filled with formidable frontcourt members\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nikola Jokic<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kevin Durant<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kawhi Leonard<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Paul George<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wembavi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Victor Wembanyama<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the Lakers have debuted a potential solution to succeeding in non-LeBron minutes. The same could hold true for their Eastern Conference counterparts\u2014filled with talents such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joel Embiid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jayson Tatum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaylen Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jimmy Butler<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, it\u2019s a very small sample size, but the compatibility of AD, C-Wood and Hayes was on full display Wednesday night. The three of them can fill up the paint and protect it just as well\u2014not to mention how Davis and Wood have improved their perimeter jumpers and defense to begin the year. They all played key roles in the Lakers on both ends of the floor, but it\u2019s their rebounding and defense where they\u2019ve made the biggest impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key factor in this lineup is using it in spurts, so as not to tax AD, Wood or Hayes by playing them any longer than they need to. While it likely won\u2019t be a consistent theme in the next few games, a center-filled lineup is a fascinating option for Darvin Ham going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have certainly been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfdigest.com\/story\/denver-nuggets-tallest-lineup-nba-history\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unique lineup combinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thrown out by coaches\u2014whether the games count or not. The Lakers are the latest example of throwing something to the wall and seeing if it sticks.
