Missing out on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lillada01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damian Lillard<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jrue Holiday<\/a><\/strong> while also losing key pieces from last year, do the reigning Eastern Conference champions have enough to compete for a title?<\/p>\n<h2>With Damian Lillard M.I.A., Can the Miami Heat Compete for a Title?<\/h2>\n<p>The Heat let <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabe Vincent<\/a><\/strong> walk his way to Los Angeles this offseason. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strusma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Strus<\/a><\/strong> went to Cleveland to help <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donovan Mitchell<\/a><\/strong>. This was manageable, assuming <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/10\/03\/winners-and-losers-of-damian-lillard-holiday-shift\/\" target=\"_self\">Lillard<\/a> would find his way to South Beach. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Lillard was dealt to Milwaukee in a three-team trade, including the Blazers and the Suns. Additionally, Holiday ended up in Boston just days later.<\/p>\n<p>The Heat missed gaining a superstar point guard and an All-Star point guard. While letting two of their vital rotational pieces from last year&#8217;s finals run go. So, what does the 2023-24 season look like for them?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Offseason Struggles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Heat culture remains alive in Southeast Florida as the Heat gear up for their team&#8217;s 36th season. Even with an offseason that didn&#8217;t go as planned, the Heat still have Pat Riley, Erik Spoelstra, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Butler<\/a><\/strong>. The Heat did bring back <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/richajo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Richardson<\/a><\/strong>, a solid two-way player familiar with that organization&#8217;s ways.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Class of the Eastern Conference<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/09\/26\/2023-24-nba-power-rankings-offseason-edition-no-2-milwaukee-bucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Milwaukee<\/a> landed the trade that Miami could not facilitate. The move pairs Lillard with two-time MVP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/strong>.<\/a> With the pair, the Bucks have a Sixth Man of the Year candidate in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portibo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Portis<\/a><\/strong>, Defensive Player of the Year runner-up in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezbr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brook Lopez<\/a><\/strong>, and former All-Star <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/middlkh01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khris Middleton<\/a><\/strong>. Milwaukee is tied for the best odds to win the title at +380.<\/p>\n<p>The Celtics are co-favorites going into the season. The Celtics let go of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Smart<\/a><\/strong> and traded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brogdma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Brogdon<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=williro04,williro07&amp;search=Robert+Williams&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Williams<\/a><\/strong>. They added <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a><\/strong>, who is coming off his best scoring season. That, coupled with the fact that they acquired Holiday from Portland in the fallout of the Lillard trade, has them poised to make a deep playoff run. The Bucks and the Celtics are the two best teams in the East and might be the best in the NBA.<\/p>\n<h3>Where Do the Miami Heat Stand in the Title Race?<\/h3>\n<p>With those two teams ahead of them, it will take South Beach a lot of work to get back to the Conference Finals, let alone the NBA Finals. Miami is jostling for the third-best team in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia 76ers, who have all they can handle right now with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a><\/strong>, and Cleveland, who added one of Miami&#8217;s sharpshooters in the offseason.<\/p>\n<h3>Do the Miami Heat Have Promise?<\/h3>\n<p>Rookie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jaqueja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaime Jaquez Jr.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and highly touted prospect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jovicni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikola Jovic<\/a> <\/strong>must step up. The Heat&#8217;s 2023 playoff stars <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martica02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caleb Martin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robindu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-11_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duncan Robinson<\/a><\/strong> must remain essential pieces. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Butler<\/a><\/strong>, nicknamed &#8220;Playoff Jimmy,&#8221; must start his superstar-caliber play in October.<\/p>\n<h3>The Miami Heat&#8217;s Herro<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/herroty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyler Herro<\/strong><\/a> is the most critical piece that needs to step up for the Heat to compete. Herro was just that in the Heat&#8217;s finals run during the bubble, but his play has been up and down since then. Last year, the Heat stud had one of his best regular seasons. Herro broke his hand in the first game of the playoffs and wasn&#8217;t impactful the rest of the season. Following that, the Blazers were uninterested in obtaining him this offseason. That led to the failure of the\u00a0Lillard trade. Miami hopes this can give him the team the spark they need to be genuine contenders in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA season is only a few weeks away, and the Heat are getting geared up for another historic finals run. Today, they are a few steps back from the cream of the crop.
