Championship Mindset<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers are no strangers to winning, and this year\u2019s group\u2014spearheaded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Head Coach Darvin Ham\u2014is more than ready for their next opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s no mistake about what our goal is, but you can&#8217;t talk about and constantly focus on the destination without first embarking on the journey,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpectrumSN\/status\/1708954604199916003\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ham said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe can\u2019t skip any steps. The short-term responsibilities, work, [and] continuity is going to create the long-term success we\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Returning Players\u2019 Perspective<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers prioritized continuity heading into the summer and got it, re-signing the majority of last season\u2019s core to new contracts and extensions. I&#8217;m looking forward to complementing each and every one of them, and helping this team win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the Lakers\u2019 signees echoed their constant communication with Ham and Pelinka as key factors in their decisions. They all had an idea of how they could help the team and what their respective roles could look like. Establishing that trust early is a laudable move by the Lakers brass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoach Ham and Rob were really big on me coming in here and playing the type of basketball I\u2019d like to play,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaxson Hayes<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpectrumSN\/status\/1708946814475653531\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome games I might start, some games I might not. But I just want to be the guy that brings a lot of energy for the team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a whole, this year\u2019s group is optimistic about the road ahead, from the core players who pushed them last season to the new guys coming along for the ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. LeBron and AD: Locked in Now More Than Ever<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 two cornerstones, LeBron and AD, have approached this season with chips on their shoulders and plenty of motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron is entering his 21st season but preparing for it like it\u2019s his first, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4910724\/2023\/09\/29\/lakers-preview-rob-pelinka-darvin-ham\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Pelinka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has been nothing but an increase in seeing that here. To me, it\u2019s, \u2018Let\u2019s be about it, let\u2019s not talk about it.\u2019 He\u2019s definitely been about it this offseason.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d -Rob Pelinka (via The Athletic)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James noted that his focus and passion are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AciBMWc4nnU?si=EOAKvQc8mnjW3DUS\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keys to his success entering year 21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnderstanding the ones that came before me, respecting the history of the game, and also understanding that if you want to be great at something, you\u2019ve got to put in the work,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Jovan Buha added that, despite James\u2019s optimism heading into camp, the Lakers will be monitoring his minutes throughout the season:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers are planning to manage James\u2019 minutes and offensive workload more than in years past, and Pelinka cited the team\u2019s depth as a way to do that. Ham said the franchise is aiming to be more efficient with James\u2019 \u2018game-to-game minutes, the big picture, month-to-month, different sections in the calendar.\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his media availability, James also revealed he\u2019s playing for something more. So there\u2019s a huge, huge road still ahead of him in how he can lead this franchise and hopefully put some more banners up here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Davis also mentioned the increased work on his jump shot, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcten\/status\/1708907143913677186\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a key skill he wanted to bring back into his offensive game<\/a>. Sacrifice<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A continuing theme expressed by every Laker is the need for \u201csacrifice.\u201d So far, the team has gelled well enough to understand that principle and its importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising sophomore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Max Christie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered his perspective on the newfound camaraderie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn these team workouts and group workouts, there\u2019s a lot of chemistry with everybody,\u201d Christie <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4W-r3giSai0?si=oboOn65fL2pFXlHc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>. \u201cEverybody knows their role and everybody wants to play their role to excellence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newer players have already bought into that ideal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prince, entering his eighth season, noted how it took a few years to adjust to his \u201c3-and-D role\u201d in the league after being \u201cthe guy\u201d at Baylor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, being who I am and knowing who I am, and what it means to be a team guy, that brings me to\u2026.being an all-around tool,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd trying to make things happen at all times while I\u2019m on the floor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhatever [my role] is, I\u2019m going to do that,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Cam Reddish<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yCDE6ChL1yA?si=zP2C3hmmt87lJW55\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI\u2019ve learned that over the years. Growing up, [I\u2019ve realized] I can\u2019t just do what I want to do all the time. Then it\u2019s being impactful\u2026Being a pest defensively, and being aggressive and assertive [offensively]. If I do those things, I\u2019ll be successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Wood<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> added that while he\u2019s uncertain of his current role, he remains ready as a winning player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhatever it\u2019s gonna be, I\u2019m ready to help this team win as many games as possible,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpectrumSN\/status\/1708973805279039538\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMy main thing is [to] get to the playoffs. I want to win games. I want to get to the end goal, which is a championship. Starting, coming off the bench, it doesn\u2019t matter. Darvin told me I\u2019m going to play a big role for this team, so I\u2019m excited for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Breakouts and Bounce Backs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, among all of the Lakers players, there are some returners and new faces ready for big contributions next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Breakout Candidates<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rui Hachimura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by all accounts, is poised for a stellar season, notably spending the whole summer with LeBron.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LeBron confirmed that he&#39;s been working out with Rui Hachimura throughout the offseason: &quot;I see a lot in him. I see his potential, not only for him individually but also for our ball club. He put pen to paper on a three-year, $71 million deal, and is ready to thrive in any situation, an ability he flashed at various points throughout last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rui on starting vs. coming off the bench: &quot;Each game is different. Even last year, we changed a lot of starting lineups after I got traded. We just gotta adjust. For me, playing time is more important. I want to finish the game. He showed how much of an asset he is to the Lakers and their frontcourt, and he has a chance to exceed expectations this season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves is coming off of a stellar sophomore season, and his summer work with Team USA has been one to behold. Now, he is embracing his role as the team\u2019s starting shooting guard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel like [the playoffs and Team USA] puts me in a good mindset,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/A66uWVbgJEs?si=-jR2FY5G-JKFjFQh\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI\u2019ve been basically competing for the last two months. I feel like [I\u2019ve] carried everything over\u2026and [I\u2019m] looking to do the same thing to start the year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entering his third season, Reaves will reportedly be tasked with more facilitating duties to balance LeBron&#8217;s offensive workload. Both Ham and Pelinka held high praises for the 25 year old, with Pelinka saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He uniquely has that sort of Mamba gene, where it\u2019s all about the work, it\u2019s about playing competitive on every play, it\u2019s about being a great teammate, not caring about the personal accolades but just the team winning.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves stood out as a regular season starter at times. In 22 games with the first unit, he put up 15.1 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game on 51% shooting from the field. Reaves shined in LA\u2019s postseason run, averaging 16.9 points on blistering .464\/.443\/.895 splits. After his playoff contributions, there was little doubt he would start for the team going forward. He has earned the opportunity that resulted from the work he put in as an undrafted player. Reaves is set to play a key role for the Lakers, and he\u2019s ultimately set up for a breakout year at 25 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Bounce Back Players<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/09\/29\/lakers-news-dangelo-russell-jrue-holiday\/\" target=\"_self\">recently named the team&#8217;s starting point guard<\/a>, is ready to silence the doubters and get back to contributing at a high level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t finish the way we wanted to, so to get the opportunity to come back and start where we left off is a privilege, and something I\u2019m appreciative of,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SMAs4f86nsE?si=n6ACKi8lhh2ASL4W\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell is equally appreciative of Ham\u2019s proclamation that he would start heading into the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny words of encouragement from your head coach is always appreciated as a player,\u201d he said. \u201cTo have that trust in me is something that I see [and am] appreciative [of]. Don\u2019t want to let him down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Wood, like Russell, hopes to put recent criticisms to rest.
