Thus, the Golden Eagles rank first in this preseason rankings series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Big East Rankings: #1-Marquette Golden Eagles<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Projected Starting 5<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PG-\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/tyler-kolek-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tyler Kolek<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SG-\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/stevie-mitchell-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stevie Mitchell<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SF-<\/span> <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/kam-jones-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kameron Jones<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PF-\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/david-joplin-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">David Joplin<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">C-\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/oso-ighodaro-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oso Ighodaro<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where the Golden Eagles Found Success<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Offense\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marquette was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/ncaa-basketball\/stat\/offensive-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">12th in offensive efficiency<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a year ago. Averaging 1.105 points per possession, the Golden Eagles had a tremendous offense. Kolek and Jones led on this end, but it was a team effort. Ighodaro was excellent in diving to the rim, Joplin and Mitchell were good bench pieces, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/olivier-maxence-prosper-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Olivier Maxence-Prosper<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was a tremendous all-around player. Their offense was tough to stop because of their ball movement, speed, and spacing. With virtually all their scoring back, except for Maxence-Prosper, Marquette looks to repeat their offensive success. They also shot an\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/ncaa-basketball\/stat\/effective-field-goal-pct\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">effective field-goal percentage of 56%<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, ranked seventh nationally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Passing<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Golden Eagles were an exceptional passing team. They were sixth in the country in assists per game.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/ncaa-basketball\/stat\/assists-per-game\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Averaging<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a017.3 assists per game, Marquette&#8217;s biggest strength was their ability to move the ball. More specifically, Kolek led the conference in assists at 7.5. He also had the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/06\/29\/marquette-basketball-preseason-addition\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">best assist-to-turnover ratio<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in the conference at 3.22. The Golden Eagles\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/ncaa-basketball\/stat\/assist--per--turnover-ratio\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were fourth<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.617.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chemistry gets developed from everyone feeling involved in offense or defense. For Marquette, their ability to share the ball made everyone get involved on the offensive end. Expect this area of their game to stay the same this season with Kolek returning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why Are They Number One?<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Experience\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Golden Eagles&#8217; starting roster all played significant minutes last season and were incredibly successful. UConn and Creighton lost a bunch of key pieces, and Marquette is bringing back virtually the same team. They won numerous games and greatly succeeded in Big East play, priming them to repeat their success this season. Also, they are a team that understands the pain of not making it as far as they wanted. Furthermore, they are hungry to win a national championship. Experience and drive make the Golden Eagles the highest-ranked team in these rankings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kolek and Jones\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kolek and Jones make up arguably the best backcourt in the Big East. Their shooting, playmaking, and chemistry make Marquette very hard to beat. Kolek was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigeast.com\/news\/2023\/3\/8\/mens-basketball-marquette-earns-player-coach-of-the-year-honors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Big East Player of the Year,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and Jones was All-Conference. Furthermore, they play well together. This duo makes Marquette a scary team because these two produce in big moments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where Do They Need to Improve?<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Defense\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shaka is known to be a defensive coach, but Marquette was not as good on the defensive end. Ranking 92nd in defense, the Golden Eagles struggled to guard the three.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They ranked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 203rd in the opponent&#8217;s field goal percentage and 186th in overall field-goal percentage defense. For Marquette to maximize their potential, defense must be the area they improve this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Last Word on the Marquette Golden Eagles<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Marquette Golden Eagles rank one because of their talent and incredible offense. They are in the driver&#8217;s seat to win the Big East. However, it is about a deep run in March for the Golden Eagles.
