Regardless of the teams exceptions, there are key questions about each team. After analyzing the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/08\/24\/one-question-for-every-eastern-conference-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">East<\/span><\/a>,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0here is one question for every Western Conference team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One Question for Every Western Conference Team<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dallas Mavericks: Will their Dallas\u2019 off-season acquisitions improve their defense enough?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DAL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dallas Mavericks<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are coming off a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, a season in which Dallas had playoff hopes but failed to even make the play-in tournament. Central to the Mavericks failures last year was poor defense. The Mavericks\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2023_ratings.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ranked<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a025th in defensive rating last year, a far cry from their 6th-ranked defense in the previous season, where they reached the Western Conference Finals. Dallas addressed their need for defense this off-season by\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/06\/grant-williams-is-a-maverick\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">signing<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0versatile forward\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willigr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grant Williams\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/a>and\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">drafting defensive-minded prospects\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/livelde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dereck Lively<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/prospol01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Olivier-Maxcene Prosper<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Mavericks have certainly improved their defense, but it\u2019s unclear how impactful the rookies will be. Ultimately, it remains unclear if these improvements will be enough for Dallas to compete in a loaded Western Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Denver Nuggets: What role player will step up?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Throughout the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DEN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Denver Nuggets<\/span><\/strong><\/a>&#8216;<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/05\/24\/the-winning-culture-of-the-denver-nuggets-is-rare-in-todays-nba\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Finals<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0run,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bruce Brown<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0proved to be one of the most impactful role players in the league. This off-season the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/IND\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacers<\/a><\/strong> rewarded him with a huge 2-year, $45 million dollar contract. Denver is looking to repeat as champions. However, to have the same success. they will need someone to step up and replicate Brown\u2019s two-way impact. Second-year wing\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/braunch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christian Braun<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is the most likely candidate to step up. Braun played quality minutes in the finals and upside at age 22. Free agent acquisition\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidju01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Justin Holiday<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and 2nd round pick\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pickeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jalen Pickett<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are two additional candidates to make surprising impacts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Golden State Warriors: How will Chris Paul fit in Golden State\u2019s system?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chris Paul<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0being\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/06\/26\/evaluating-the-chris-paul-jordan-poole-trade-did-the-wizards-or-warriors-come-out-on-top\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">traded<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/GSW\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Golden State Warriors<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was perhaps the most surprising move of the off-season. Paul is an all-time great point guard and playmaker. But at 38, he is entering a new stage of his career. Paul will still handle the ball and initiate offense for the Warriors. However, the Warriors system will have Paul play more off-ball than he has his entire career. Paul will no longer be the focal point of the offense, so this will certainly be an adjustment f<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">or him. Ultimately, great players and great teams tend to these things out, which will likely be the case here. Nonetheless, watching Paul adapt to playing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Steph Curry<\/strong><\/a> and the Warriors will be incredibly intriguing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Houston Rockets: How will they balance being competitive with developing young players?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/HOU\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Houston Rockets<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have a loaded young core, including\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jalen Green<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 4th overall pick\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompam01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amen Thompson<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alperen Sengun<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jabari Smith<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitmca01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cam Whitmore<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porteke02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kevin Porter Jr.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/easonta01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tari Eason<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This core sets them up nicely for the future and has tons of upside. This year the Rockets are looking to rise from the basement of the Western Conference. As a result, the Rockets also signed two win-now players\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanvlfr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fred VanVleet<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dillon Brooks<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Houston also hired Ime Udoka, a win-now coach. On paper, none of these moves should interfere with the Rockets young core. If anything, they should elevate the core. However, it\u2019s a lot to balance and there\u2019s a lot of mouths to feed. It\u2019s a strong possibility someone gets lost in the shuffle as a result.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Los Angeles Clippers: Can the stars stay healthy?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The star duo of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kawhi Leonard<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Paul George<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has been a massive disappointment for the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/LAC\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Los Angeles Clippers.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The duo has only delivered one Western Conference Finals berth in four seasons. This is in large part due to the constant injuries the stars have battled. 2020 is the only playoff run that both stars have been healthy for. As the two stars continue to age and injuries continue to pile up, the title window begins to close. However, if the star duo can stay healthy this year they could legitimately compete for a title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Los Angeles Lakers: Can Anthony Davis be the clear number-one option?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At 38, it is entirely possible<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0LeBron James<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will decline or want a lesser role.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is poised to take on more responsibility and become the clear number one option. Many people already view him as the team&#8217;s best player due to his elite two-way ability. However, to become the clear-cut number option, Davis will need to be fully healthy and consistently aggressive on offense. This is the version of Davis we saw in the playoffs. If Davis is playing at an elite level, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/LAL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Los Angeles Lakers<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; title chances could skyrocket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Memphis Grizzlies: Will a lack of a wing defense hurt Memphis?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dillon Brooks is certainly a controversial player. But there\u2019s no denying his departure leaves\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/MEM\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Memphis<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with a gaping flaw in wing defense. The Grizzlies will depend on\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marcus Smart<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Desmond Bane<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to guard opposing wings. Smart is a great defender but will have a hard time guarding bigger wings, while Bane is just an average defender. The lack of wing defense will hurt the Grizzlies in a competitive Western conference, especially against elite wings or bigger teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Minnesota Timberwolves: Will the Towns and Gobert pairing work?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The double big pairing of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/townska01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Karl-Anthony Towns<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goberru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rudy Gobert<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is extremely divisive. However, we only got a sample size last year. Towns played 29 regular season games and returned just before the playoffs from a calf\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/12\/19\/how-the-timberwolves-bench-can-overcome-their-injury-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">injury<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Before Towns got injured the big-man duo showed signs of struggling, which led to a lot of questions about the fit. However, during the playoffs, the pairing showed a lot of good signs and looked very solid. Ultimately, a full season together will prove if this pairing will work for the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/MIN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Orleans Pelicans: Can Zion Williamson play for a full year?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since entering the league in 2019,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willizi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zion Williamson<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has had one full season, which was the 2020-21 campaign. When Zion is healthy, he\u2019s an unstoppable force and an elite scorer. With a healthy Zion, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/NOH\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Orleans Pelicans<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are in the mix for top teams in the West. New Orleans sat\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2023_standings_by_date_western_conference.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">atop<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the West last December before Zion went down with a season-ending hamstring injury. A healthy Zion is key to the Pelicans having success this year and for Zion to remain on the roster in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oklahoma City Thunder: Will Chet Holmgren help OKC make a playoff push?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/OKC\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are coming off a surprisingly successful season in which they posted a 40-42 record and were one win away from the playoffs. This happened all while last year\u2019s number 2 overall pick,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chet Holmgren<\/span><\/strong><\/a>,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was out with a foot injury.
