After spending over 15 years at the company, he is now out of a job as a commentator. About a month ago, ESPN laid off over 20 employees, which included Jeff Van Gundy. Van Gundy and Jackson made a popular partnership. They hosted countless NBA Finals games together and had funny remarks and entertaining debates on the broadcast.

ESPN did not believe Jackson brought the same broadcasting value without Van Gundy in the booth. While that may seem true, there was no chance to see Jackson without Van Gundy to prove otherwise. Therefore, the firing shocked the sports world because it was a month later.

pic.twitter.com/fnhpKAt05K

— Mark Jackson (@MarkJackson13) August 1, 2023

Jackson’s Response

Jackson explained the unexpected news. Initially, ESPN looked to keep him on but put him in the lower levels of the broadcasting team. However, ESPN told him he no longer had a job there. He said that he was “dismayed” with the decision. He explained his disappointment in the “suddenness” of the decision and how shocked he was. Nevertheless, he showed gratitude and appreciation for his time at ESPN. Jackson thanked the people he worked with and gave ESPN props for his opportunity.

Although frustrated, Jackson remained classy about it and wished the new broadcasting group success.

Why Van Gundy and Jackson Should Make a Podcast

With this firing, a new question arises: should there be The Jackson and Van Gundy Podcast? It is a plausible alternative to sitting around and doing nothing after ESPN let both of them go. These individuals coached in the NBA, and Jackson played in the league. Moreover, they broadcasted and worked together for over 15 years. Therefore, a podcast with these two is reasonable. They could tell great stories, bring insight into their broadcasting duties at ESPN, and get more time to break down the games. Being popular sports media members and with podcasts growing, Jackson and Van Gundy could work in this realm. If they were to do it, the podcast would entertain fans greatly.

The Last Word

Mark Jackson’s firing surprised many. Nevertheless, he made a successful broadcasting career for himself. Hopefully, Jackson finds his way into podcasting or throws his name in the hat to be an NBA Coach again.
