{"id":51873,"date":"2023-07-19T07:00:54","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=51873"},"modified":"2023-07-18T23:00:32","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T03:00:32","slug":"four-rising-nba-sophomores-to-watch-next-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/19\/four-rising-nba-sophomores-to-watch-next-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Rising NBA Sophomores to Watch Next Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from offering a glimpse into this year\u2019s talented rookie class, the 2023 Summer League allowed fans to witness some rising NBA sophomore&#8217;s development heading into the next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although plenty of players from the class of 2022 are looking to make the jump, four sophomores could make waves on their respective teams next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Four Rising NBA Sophomores to Watch Next Season<\/h2>\n<h3>Keegan Murray<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although his Summer League stint ended after two games in the California Classic, that did not stop fans from noticing how far <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/SAC\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Sacramento Kings<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrake02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Keegan Murray<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacramento\u2019s fourth pick last year put up solid numbers in his rookie campaign\u201412.2 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 45% from the field and 41% from deep. However, his transformation in Las Vegas has been remarkable, with many pointing out that he\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clutchpoints.com\/kings-news-keegan-murray-is-too-good-for-the-nba-summer-league\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctoo good for Summer League.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/07\/2023-california-classic-superlatives-top-performers-and-biggest-disappointments\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a blistering California Classic run<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that included <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ddguKrS_mQo\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 41-point outburst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (11\/20 FG, 6\/11 3PT, 13\/15 FT) against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/MIA\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Miami Heat<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Murray was shut down by Summer League head coach Luke Loucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kings made some noise in the West last year, silencing doubters by ending their 16-year-long playoff drought. Despite losing in seven games to the defending-champion Golden State Warriors, Sacramento has plenty to be proud of, and watching Murray develop into a star-calibre sophomore is one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The six-foot-eight forward\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/kingsherald.com\/season-review\/sacramento-kings-season-review-keegan-murray\/#:~:text=Murray%20finished%20the%20season%20averaging,role%20on%20a%20playoff%20team.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growth on both sides of the ball<\/a> will be pivotal towards his success, but his knack for scoring is even more evident after his stellar July run. It\u2019s a great sign for Kings fans as the team continues to build on recent success with the goal of a deeper run in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jabari Smith Jr.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5GeKxY0j5KQ\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miraculous game-winning three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/HOU\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston Rockets<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Summer League opener, forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jabari Smith Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outlined his reasons for playing in the contests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My rookie year wasn\u2019t perfect \u2014 it wasn\u2019t great,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Smith <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/rockets\/news\/houston-rockets-jabari-smith-jr-summer-league-portland-trail-blazers-game-winner\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why not come out here and get reps, play with refs, play with my new teammates, play with my coaches, and get a feel? I feel like any second-year guy should be open to play just because of the opportunity.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drafted third overall last year, Smith averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, shooting 41% from the field, 31% from three, and 79% from the free-throw line. Despite only playing two games, Smith made his presence known in a major way. He averaged a league-most 35.5 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one block per game on 49-33-85 splits. Those marks were good enough to give him <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/basketball.realgm.com\/wiretap\/272519\/Cam-Whitmore-Named-2023-Summer-League-MVP-Headlines-AllNBA-Team\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-Summer League Second Team honors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the recent additions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanvlfr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fred VanVleet<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dillon Brooks<\/strong><\/a>, and head coach Ime Udoka, Smith has an opportunity to elevate his game next year, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/emXn0T3L7iI\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he knows it, too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheir minds [will make his job easier],\u201d he said. \u201cFred VanVleet is a champion. Dillon Brooks has been deep in the playoffs\u2014he\u2019s won a lot of games. Their experience with winning at the highest level and what they\u2019ve seen\u2014who wouldn\u2019t want that on their team?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith also touched on the advice Udoka has given him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOut here in Summer League, he\u2019s just telling me to lead,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s good to learn how to lead earlier than later. He\u2019s always telling me to lead, use my voice, focus on defense, and focus on ways to improve and help this team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear that Smith\u2019s development as a player and, more importantly, as a leader will serve him well among a young core of Rockets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jaden Ivey<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third rising NBA sophomore to watch is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DET\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Detroit Pistons<\/strong><\/a> guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iveyja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaden Ivey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The fifth overall pick made a good impression during his rookie year, averaging 16.3 points and 5.2 assists per game on 42\/34\/75 splits. The Athletic\u2019s James L. Edwards III recently broke down how Ivey and teammate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durenja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jalen Duren<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4398558\/2023\/04\/11\/jaden-ivey-jalen-duren-pistons\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved throughout their rookie seasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He pointed out how Ivey excelled in various facets on the offensive end, from his change of speed to his shooting:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivey\u2019s 3-point shooting jumped 5 percent \u2014 from an underwhelming 31.4 percent (4.1 attempts per game) to a respectable 36.5 percent (5.3 attempts per game) \u2014 from his first 37 games to his final 37 games. To start his career, Ivey had no midrange game\u2026 By the end of his rookie season, Ivey\u2019s midrange uptick may have been the most impressive thing about him, especially given how far he came.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of Ivey\u2019s highlights even stunned former head coach Dwayne Casey, who told Edwards III, \u201cHe makes something out of nothing. He gets stuck in certain situations and I\u2019m like, \u2018Whoa, what is he doing?\u2019 and then all at once he comes out of it like Houdini and makes a play or a shot. That\u2019s a gift and skill he has.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivey was limited in Summer League reps due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10041531-pistons-jaden-ivey-ruled-out-of-nba-summer-league-game-after-suffering-ankle-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an ankle injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, he made a statement, posting 22 points and ten assists in a loss to the Rockets\u2014one game before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going down. Through two games, he averaged 18 points, seven assists and 3.5 steals on 41\/27\/80 splits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Ivey can continue to make strides with his shot-making and do a better job of taking care of the ball, he\u2019ll put the league on notice in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jaden Hardy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, though he may not have been a first-round pick last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DAL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dallas Mavericks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardyja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaden Hardy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is quickly reminding them he\u2019s on their level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/25\/jaden-hardy-dallas-mavericks-steal\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken 37th overall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hardy played his way into the Mavs\u2019 rotation, averaging 8.8 points per game on 44% shooting from the field and 40% from deep in 15 minutes a night. Summer League has proven to be a different story, one that Hardy is having fun writing. The 21-year-old played three games and averaged 23 points (fourth in Vegas), 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and one steal. Though it came on less-than-desired shooting splits (35\/24\/73), Hardy\u2019s teammates quickly caught onto his standout scoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think he should even be playing [in Summer League],\u201d two-way rookie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/milesmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mike Miles Jr.<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mavs.com\/mavs-win-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c[Hardy]\u2019s that good. He\u2019s a scorer. He is a great teammate and always puts confidence in everybody\u2026 He\u2019s the best player on the team. We go as he goes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his struggles, Mavs assistant and Summer League head coach Jared Dudley praised Hardy for stepping up as the team\u2019s best player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s not shooting the ball well. (But) we\u2019re winning games,\u201d Dudley said. A lot\u2019s going on. We\u2019re having him guard some of the best players. Offensively, they\u2019re having the best player guard him. They\u2019re sinking. They know his game.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Dallas\u2019s rotation largely set (though it could change depending on the status of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardati02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tim Hardaway Jr.\u2019s<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/10\/nba-rumors-dallas-mavericks-looking-to-trade-tim-hardaway-jr\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Hardy will have a more difficult path earning rotational minutes than his counterparts, likely competing with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Seth Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenjo02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Josh Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, he isn\u2019t going down without a fight. Observing how Hardy plays in training camp will give viewers a better idea of whether he can step up when it matters the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Last Word on the Four Rising NBA Sophomores<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though these four players are all on different teams and in different situations, one thing is clear: they are all stars in their roles which their coaches, teammates and fans respect.
