The draft has been completed, free agents have been signed, and trades have been made. Like every offseason, it\u2019s common to overreact to these summer transactions. Throughout the Adam Silver era, the NBA community has been more engaged with the offseason than ever. Thanks to social media, fans now \u201cfollow\u201d the league through ESPN posts showcasing breaking news, highlight reels, and gossip. The offseason has become as important to the standard fan as the regular season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, NBA analysts and casual fans have labeled the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/05\/24\/the-winning-culture-of-the-denver-nuggets-is-rare-in-todays-nba\/\" target=\"_self\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> as offseason \u201closers.\u201d This grade was (mostly) a result of losing fan-favorite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Brown<\/a><\/strong> and re-signing<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksre01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reggie Jackson<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; who played just 18 minutes in the playoffs (just under two minutes in the Finals).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Outrageous to Label the Denver Nuggets as Offseason &#8220;Losers&#8221;<\/h2>\n<h3>Nikola Jokic: The Ultimate Teammate<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, losing Brown stings. He was a key rotation piece throughout the regular season and playoffs. However, let\u2019s put things into perspective. Does he play at the same high level without <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikola Jokic<\/a><\/strong>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly. Brown is a versatile defender, solid ball handler, consistent shooter, and overall high IQ player. He also has a terrific locker-room personality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Jokic turns his teammates into the best version of their basketball selves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoaa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Gordon<\/a><\/strong>. He turned around his underwhelming career with the Orlando Magic and became a vital part of a championship team with Denver. Brown\u2019s salary nearly tripled after one season playing alongside Jokic. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/craigto01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torrey Craig<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaslma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malik Beasley<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrimo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monte Morris<\/a><\/strong> reached their peak performance levels when Jokic was their teammate. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bartowi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Barton<\/a><\/strong>, who played 449 games alongside the two-time MVP and was traded last offseason, is currently unemployed as a free agent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not being critical of Brown, Barton, or any of Jokic\u2019s teammates. Instead, I am giving credit where credit is due. NBA players play better with Jokic than any other athlete in the league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should the Nuggets be considered \u201closers\u201d of the offseason when Brown was nearly guaranteed to cash out this summer? General manager Calvin Booth and company prepared for this outcome for months. It wasn\u2019t some shock or surprise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I am not saying Denver had a perfect offseason. Re-signing Jackson to a two-year, $10.25 million contract using the mid-level exception on the first day of free agency raised eyebrows. He initially signed in February but didn\u2019t play a meaningful role for the Nuggets since his acquisition. Theoretically, crucial cap space could have been spent elsewhere in the free-agent market. Last summer, Denver used their mid-level exception to sign Brown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does re-signing Jackson classify Denver as a \u201closer\u201d of the off-season? Of course not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Denver&#8217;s Under-the-Radar Youth Movement<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nuggets should be favored to repeat as NBA champions because their starting core remains intact. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/braunch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Braun<\/a><\/strong> is more than ready to take Brown\u2019s role as sixth-man. An intensive defender and smart offensive player, Braun is already beloved amongst the Nuggets community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsope01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Peyton Watson<\/strong><\/a>, a favorite of mine, has shown flashes of becoming the next big name in Denver sports. A high-flying athlete with long arms and a high motor, Watson can be an All-NBA defender when healthy and motivated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Summer League, second-round rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tysonhu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hunter Tyson<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EhanwJDoVGc&amp;ab_channel=DenverNuggets\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exceeded expectations<\/a> and showcased his shot-making, athleticism, defensive IQ, and competitiveness. Rookies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pickeja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jalen Pickett<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strawju01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Julian Strawther<\/strong><\/a> also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ci7M9eearoU&amp;ab_channel=DenverNuggets\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impressed<\/a> the Nuggets community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NBA collective seems to ignore this brewing youth movement in Denver. Instead, it points to journeyman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidju01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Holiday<\/a><\/strong> (ten teams in a decade-long career) as the Nuggets&#8217; only offseason move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denver is preparing its roster for the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, which took effect on July 1st. The new CBA includes financial and roster-building consequences for exceeding luxury tax limits. This stop teams like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers from overspending on players and \u201cbuy\u201d dynasties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My point is that the Nuggets are stocked with young players on their rookie contracts who are NBA-ready and can maximize their potential simply by having Jokic as a teammate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should the Phoenix Suns be considered a \u201cwinner\u201d of the offseason when serious consequences are looming for their excessive payroll? Why isn\u2019t the Charlotte Hornets considered a \u201closer\u201d of the offseason when they clearly whiffed on a generational talent in Scoot Henderson?
