Though many Filipinos have watched with wonder as the league\u2019s superstars visit the country\u2014with some even playing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QOxrZKlVMsI\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in exhibition games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in front of thousands\u2014they are now looking to impact the game they love in their own way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The league has featured several notable players of Filipino descent throughout the years, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jalen Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkjo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jordan Clarkson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serving as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HPaoUUrF9ac\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent examples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, there has never been a Filipino-born player in the NBA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One undrafted rookie is looking to change that. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/ORL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Orlando Magic<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> center <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/international\/players\/kai-sotto-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kai Sotto<\/b><\/a>, who made his NBA <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/08\/4-nba-summer-league-teams-to-watch\/\" target=\"_self\">Summer League<\/a> debut Wednesday night,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is attempting to bridge the gap between the Philippines and the Association. He has the nation behind him every step of the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Global Game: Filipino Rookie Kai Sotto Could Make NBA History<\/h3>\n<h3>Sotto\u2019s Journey<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotto stands out as a prospect, both literally and figuratively. The seven-foot-two center hails from Las Pi\u00f1as, a city inside the main region of Metro Manila. He <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/basketball\/story\/_\/id\/31314109\/line-kai-sotto-basketball-journey\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">became invested in the sport from a young age<\/a>. He had<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a storied high school career at Ateneo de Manila, culminating with a UAAP juniors division championship in 2018 (where he won Finals MVP) and MVP honors the following season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotto\u2019s long-winded journey has taken him from the Philippines to the U.S. and other parts of the world. He first arrived in the States in 2019 to train at The Skill Factory in Atlanta. Afterwards, he played a season with the NBA\u2019s G League Ignite before returning to the Philippines for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. He then spent two seasons with the NBL\u2019s Adelaide 36ers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBL\/status\/1410493503486849025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1410493503486849025%7Ctwgr%5Edb4111576bd2bdb0773fed05378b26fef37718e1%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnba.smart.com.ph%2Fread%2Ftimeline-kai-sotto-nba-draft-journey\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing former NBA players in various contests<\/span><\/a>. In 2022-23, he<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on 51% shooting from the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big man\u2019s NBA aspirations were close to fruition when he declared for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/2022-nba-draft-order\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2022 Draft<\/a>, but he did not hear his name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that night. After another overseas stint\u2014this time with the Hiroshima Dragonflies of the Japanese B League\u2014Sotto joined the Magic\u2019s Summer League team, coming one step closer to his dream and the one shared by fellow Filipinos.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2023 Summer League: Sotto\u2019s Best Chance<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotto has an opportunity to display his skills on both ends of the floor in Las Vegas. He holds promise as a young big who effectively scores inside the arc and protects the paint just as well. He\u2019s designated as one of two centers on the Magic\u2019s Summer League roster, but instead of racking up meaningful minutes, he accumulated DNPs in the team&#8217;s first three games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through it all, Sotto remained resilient, telling ESPN he has enjoyed Summer League and is doing his best to be a team player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m just trying to show the coaches that I&#8217;m a good teammate, I&#8217;m a good player,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/basketball\/story\/_\/id\/37993050\/kai-sotto-staying-upbeat-lack-nba-summer-league-action\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI&#8217;ll be ready whenever they call my name. I&#8217;ll be a positive guy on the corner, on the bench. I&#8217;m just like a sponge, just trying to learn from everybody, from all the things that&#8217;s happening to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also expressed his gratitude towards Filipino fans cheering him on at the Thomas &amp; Mack Center, saying, \u201cI&#8217;m really happy to see a lot of Filipinos here come and watch our game and support. It&#8217;s just a blessing each day to represent my country and to have a lot of people believe in me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, his supporters had grown frustrated with Orlando\u2019s coaching staff. As the team fell to 0-3 in Vegas, fans flooded social media with the hashtag \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/sports\/nba\/filipino-fans-blast-orlando-magic-kai-sotto-benching-continue-summer-league-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#LetKaiPlay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The wait was over Wednesday night, as Sotto checked in during the second quarter of Orlando&#8217;s game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/POR\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Portland Trail Blazers<\/strong><\/a>. In 13 minutes, Sotto put up six points (3-7 FG), four rebounds, three blocks and one assist. A team could also sign him to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/news\/nba\/cba-explained-exhibit-10-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhibit 10 contract<\/span><\/a>. Here,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0even if a player is waived before opening night, he could sign with that team\u2019s G League affiliate and earn a bonus if he stays with them for 60 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/pacers\/news\/sotto-pushing-to-make-the-philippines-proud#:~:text=There%20have%20been%20a%20few,said%20of%20reaching%20the%20NBA.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview with the NBA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the 2022 Draft, Sotto touched on what it would mean for him to make it to the league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I look at the bigger picture, I want to make it to the NBA to serve as an example and inspiration to the younger players, younger athletes back home in the Philippines,\u201d he told NBA.com. \u201cIf they can say that if Kai can make it, so can I, that&#8217;s a dream come true.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, his options remain open, and the dream is still alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Last Word on Kai Sotto<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Sotto\u2019s journey to an NBA roster is not over, but he has faced a plethora of bumps in the road. As other international prospects can attest, their steps toward playing in the league differed significantly from the ones who took a more traditional route in the U.S., but it doesn\u2019t diminish their status as an NBA player. The same should go for Sotto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotto&#8217;s debut last night allowed basketball fans to glimpse his talent.
