The Phoenix Suns have been rather quiet<\/span>\u00a0since acquiring<\/span>\u00a0Bradley Beal<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, but\u00a0<\/span>Eric Gordon<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is now a member of the Suns. The former Six-Man of the Year will add bench depth to help the Suns contend in the West.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eric Gordon is the Newest Addition to the Suns<\/span><\/h2>\n

Background\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Eric comes off a solid season with the LA Clippers, where he averaged\u00a0<\/span>12.4 points a game<\/span><\/a>\u00a0between his time with Houston and the Clippers. After being let go by the Clippers, Eric\u00a0<\/span>signed a 2-year, $6 million<\/span><\/a>\u00a0deal with the Suns and provides needed depth to a short roster in Phoenix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Does Gordon Bring the Suns?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Offensive Punch\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Gordon is a good offensive player, as <\/span>his career average is 16 points per game<\/span><\/a>. Therefore, he brings a boost offensively for the Suns as another player who can complement the three stars for the Suns. Gordon is comfortable in isolation situations, catch-and-shoot, and playing in pick-and-roll. Gordon’s skillset meshes well with more ball-dominant guards for Phoenix, who need guys who provide spacing for them to operate offensively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bench Depth\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

One of the issues with Phoenix revolves around their lack of bench scoring. Gordon will help with that issue because a solid bench group helps win NBA Championships. Denver had three players off the bench that provided scoring or defensive boosts for the Nuggets. The Miami Heat had shooters off the bench that proved essential for their playoff run.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phoenix did not have a bench to contend with the Nuggets. While their depth needs work, Gordon is a piece to help bring some scoring to the reserves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gordon ranked <\/span>337 out of 539 players in Defensive Win Shares<\/span><\/a>, meaning his defensive impact is below the league average. Phoenix does not address their lack of defense heading into this season. Furthermore, Gordon is 34 and\u00a0<\/span>has an injury history<\/span><\/a>, which is a big concern as well. Gordon’s low defensive rating makes him a target on defense, especially in the pick-and-roll offense when teams typically switch screens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gordon helps their offense but does not improve their defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eric Gordon adds value to Phoenix because he adds needed bench depth and scoring for the Suns. He has playoff experience and knows how to play off the ball.
