Rutgers missed out on the NCAA Tournament after falling to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com\/story\/sports\/college\/rutgers\/2023\/03\/10\/rutgers-basketball-falls-to-purdue-in-big-ten-tournament\/69991161007\/#:~:text=CHICAGO%20%E2%80%93%20This%20time%2C%20Rutgers%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20topple%20Purdue.,the%20Big%20Ten%20Tournament%20Friday%20at%20United%20Center.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Purdue in the Quarterfinals of the Big 10 Tournament<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After this unfortunate end to the season, Rutgers looks to improve itself and get back to contention in the Big 10 Conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What does Rutgers need to improve on or keep for next season?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is a Bounce-Back Imminent for Rutgers Basketball?<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Improvements for Rutgers<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Offensive Production<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When it comes to offense, it is no secret that Rutgers is not the most efficient offensive team. The Scarlet Knights need to improve their offensive production, especially <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">without\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/37809324\/uconn-lands-sharp-shooting-transfer-guard-cam-spencer\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cam Spencer<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> returning to Piscataway, NJ, next year. Rutgers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/ncaa-basketball\/stat\/offensive-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">189 out of 363<\/a> Division I teams in offensive efficiency<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0last season and needs to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In terms of offense in their conference, Rutgers was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/stats.aspx?path=mbball&amp;year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">10th in points per game out of 14 teams<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in the Big 10 Conference. They were also\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/stats.aspx?path=mbball&amp;year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">12th in overall field goal percentage,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0so their offensive production and efficiency need to make big strides this upcoming basketball season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More importantly, they were only 10th in their\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/stats.aspx?path=mbball&amp;year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">conference in free throw shooting<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at 70%. Foul shots are an easy way to generate points. Free-Throws are another area that must improve for Rutgers this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Three Point Shooting\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Without Cam Spencer, Rutgers really needs to improve their three-point shooting. They were second to last in three-point\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/stats.aspx?path=mbball&amp;year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">shooting percentage in the Big 10<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at 32.1%. Cam Spencer\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/4433083\/cam-spencer\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was a 43.4% perimeter shooter<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, so the Scarlet Knights have a lot of needed improvement from the three-point line with his absence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It also is essential because of big man\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/4433155\/clifford-omoruyi\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Clifford Omoruyi&#8217;s<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0skill set in the paint<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Omoruyi is a rim-rolling, active paint player who can score on quick post moves. Therefore, Rutgers must develop three-point shooting success to give more space for their big man to operate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What Has Worked?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their Defense\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While Rutgers has their offensive problems, they are exceptional on the defensive end of the floor. They were\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/stats.aspx?path=mbball&amp;year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">number one<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in points per game allowed, opponent&#8217;s field goal percentage, and three-point shooting percentage defense in the Big 10 this past season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, it will be harder to keep that mark with two-time\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scarletknights.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/caleb-mcconnell\/11714\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caleb McConnell<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Graduated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but Head Coach\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/scarletknights.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/coaches\/steve-pikiell\/4459\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Steve Pikiell\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">built Rutgers on strong defensive principles. Therefore, Scarlet Knight fans should be excited about the future of the team from a defensive standpoint. Rutgers has Omoruyi returning, which brings an excellent rim presence defensively for this upcoming season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Exciting New Additions\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While Rutgers loses three key players in McConnell, Spencer, and\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/4432849\/paul-mulcahy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Mulcahy<\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Scarlet Knights have excited new additions for this upcoming season.\u00a0<\/span>Gavin Griffiths<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was the 49th-ranked prospect in the incoming ESPN 100<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and Gavin will be coming into Piscataway for his first season. They also bring in\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/basketball\/recruiting\/player\/_\/id\/254807\/jamichael-davis\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jamichael Davis<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, another talented First-Year. Additionally, Rutgers picked up some transfers that will make an impact.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/4431791\/noah-fernandes\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Noah Fernandes<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who averaged 13.4 ppg at Umass<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0last season, and Junior College transfer<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com\/story\/sports\/college\/rutgers\/2023\/06\/12\/rutgers-basketball-adds-emmanuel-ogbole-junior-college-center\/70284512007\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Emmaunel Ogbole<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">looked to bring some impact to the Rutgers squad.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their Toughness<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rutgers is one of the toughest teams in the country. While they may struggle on offense and fail to hit perimeter shots consistently, they are always in a game because of their toughness. Pikiell instilled being a physically and mentally tough team. Their grit was evident in their loss to Purdue. They clawed that entire game and held their own against\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/college\/purdue\/2023\/03\/10\/purdue-basketball-rutgers-live-updates-score-video-highlights\/69990506007\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zach Edey<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Rutgers embraces a physical game, and their press, mixed with smart, tenacious half-court defense, makes them a team that is always competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rutgers basketball is synonymous with grit. While it may not always be pretty, it has led to two NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Expectations\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Regarding expectations for Rutgers, this squad has a lot of optimism. Even though they will be without Spencer, they have a team of experienced and talented players. Also, they have a coach that showed success in his time at Rutgers.
