Though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LakersReporter\/status\/1661092279535431680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1661092279535431680%7Ctwgr%5Ee1cee3d282e8cb65cbdf7e88dc2559b259d6b73c%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbleacherreport.com%2Farticles%2F10077070-dangelo-russell-2nd-lakers-stint-was-complete-success-would-love-to-stay-in-la\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he has expressed his desire to stay with the Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s also clear that money talks. If the Lakers wind up losing Russell to a team with better financial flexibility, they will have to reevaluate their point guard options yet again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Los Angeles Lakers: If D\u2019Angelo Russell Walks, is Austin Reaves the Answer?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers have been repeatedly linked to James\u2019s former teammate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kyrie Irving<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, despite his elevated status, has had a host of issues plague him on and off the court. Irving could either stay with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DAL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dallas Mavericks<\/strong><\/a> or join his fourth team in six years since requesting a trade from Cleveland. If the Lakers were to pull it off, it just might keep James from turning those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10076982-sources-lebron-james-considering-retirement-after-wcf-exit-20-nba-seasons\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retirement rumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also Toronto Raptors guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanvlfr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Fred VanVleet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2mgBuy9gSy4?t=344\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to ESPN\u2019s Brian Windhorst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could come over amid the Raptors\u2019 uncertain direction and the fact that he is represented by Klutch Sports, which also reps LA\u2019s superstar duo of James and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The 29-year-old undrafted guard averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 34% from three this season. Adding to his case for the Lakers is his five years of playoff experience and relatively cheaper value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if the Lakers do not want to look outside to solve their point guard problem, the answer could lie right in front of their faces: soon-to-be third-year guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Austin Reaves<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Overview of Austin Reaves<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/05\/23\/lakers-offseason-resources-draft-picks-free-agents-cap\/\" target=\"_self\">Reaves impressed many in his playoff debut<\/a> as a second-year player. He put up 16.9 points and 4.6 assists per game on 46-44-89 splits in 16 games. That included an average of 21.3 PPG and 5.3 APG in the Western Conference Finals against the no. 1-seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/DEN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Denver Nuggets<\/strong><\/a>. Reaves had several memorable performances in LA\u2019s postseason run, including a 23-point outburst in his first game <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-_GwzTp37vY\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where he proclaimed, \u201cI\u2019M HIM\u201d after a clutch bucket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He went on to drop 23 five more times, notably burying five of nine three-point attempts in the Lakers\u2019 game 1 loss to Denver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves proved his prowess as a scorer throughout the regular season. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0frs9Vl4vnA\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">met his goal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of shooting 40% from three, scoring 59% of his points from beyond the arc. He also excelled inside the perimeter. 67% of his two-pointers came from assists and he scored 29% of his points in the paint. Reaves consistently showed a knack for getting his own buckets by any means necessary, a skill that saved the Lakers in various moments throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a regular-season starter (15 games), Reaves boasted 15.1 points and 4.2 assists per game on 51-40-89 splits. He developed into a seamless fit next to James and Davis. The trio held an offensive rating of 116.5 and a defensive rating of 102.2 in the regular season and 114.5 and 108.5 in the playoffs, respectively. AR also held the second-best plus-minus as a starter in the regular season (7.4) and the best mark in the postseason (4.6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reaves&#8217;s growth heading into his third year coupled with the team&#8217;s cap flexibility bodes well for his future, and comments from both sides appear to echo the sentiment.<\/p>\n<h3>Reaves\u2019s Status with the Lakers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves expressed his desire to remain a Laker throughout the year, reiterating that fact in his exit interview on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cIt feels like a home for me. The way the fans support me, the players, coaching staff, front office. General Manager Rob Pelinka <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PdkEKuwzNbE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated in his exit interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that keeping the young core would be a priority this offseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would say this resoundingly clear: our intentions are to keep our core of young guys together,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a lot of great young players, and we want to do our best to fit the puzzle together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAustin, in particular, had an incredible year,\u201d Pelinka continued. \u201cHe defines what\u2019s at the heart of playing for the Lakers. He\u2019s a selfless, team-first guy. He lives in the gym. He loves the big moment, he\u2019s been able to meet the big moment\u2026We\u2019ll hang our hat on guys like that, [ones] that compete, love the game, love their teammates. We\u2019re proud to have him as part of our franchise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proud enough to go above and beyond to re-sign him for a few more years? Hopefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Last Word on Austin Reaves<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Lakers have multiple targets at point guard, their best move would be, as Pelinka said, to retain their current core. Other franchises, such as the <\/span>Nuggets<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span>Miami Heat<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have found success in that department in their respective playoff runs, developing their young guys into championship-caliber players. It\u2019s time for the Lakers to do the same, even if some changes occur.
