Brooks was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/basketball\/nba\/canadian-dillon-brooks-selected-45th-overall-grizzlies\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45th pick in the 2017 draft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; a player selected at that pick is as likely to play in the G-League as in the NBA. Instead, Brooks played all 82 games his rookie season. He went on to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/memphis-grizzlies\/dillon-brooks-23646\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign a $35 million contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and earn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/nba-announces-2020-21-all-defensive-first-and-second-teams\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-Defensive team votes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the upcoming free agent\u2019s time with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/grizzlies\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has come to an end. He is a tremendous one-on-one defender, with strength and intelligence compensating for a relative lack of length. He isn\u2019t a great shooter, ball handler, or athlete, but at his best his mental fortitude allows him to transcend those limitations and be an impactful scorer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dillon Brooks\u2019s mental makeup has allowed him to play at a level that far exceeds a typical second-round pick, but he also landed in the perfect place to realize his potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dillon Brooks\u2019 Time in Memphis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooks arrived at a Memphis team caught between identities. The 2016-17 Grizzlies finished 43-39 and lost to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/spurs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Antonio Spurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first round of the playoffs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/conlemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mike Conley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gasolma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Marc Gasol<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were playing at a high level, with Gasol making the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/basketball.realgm.com\/nba\/allstar\/game\/rosters\/2017\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-Star team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Fellow Grit-N-Grindfather <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/randoza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Zach Randolph<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was on the decline, though, and came off the bench that season. Highly-touted free agent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parsoch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Chandler Parsons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was hurt and played just 34 games; he would only play 66 more games in his career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooks\u2019 rookie season was a disaster for the Grizzlies. Conley played just 12 games after suffering a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2753506-mike-conley-to-undergo-season-ending-surgery-on-heel-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heel injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Memphis could manage only 22 wins after firing head coach David Fizdale midseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment was beneficial for Brooks\u2019 development, however; he shot 44% from the field and 35.6% from three in nearly 29 minutes per game. After missing most of his second season with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2814806-dillon-brooks-reportedly-likely-to-miss-rest-of-season-with-toe-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toe injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Brooks averaged 16.2 and 17.2 points per game in his third and fourth seasons, respectively. The Grizzlies made the play-in during the 2020 Bubble postseason and upset the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/warriors\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State Warriors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the play-in to make the playoffs in Brooks\u2019 fourth year (2020-21).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Brooks\u2019 defense maintained an upward trajectory, his efficiency steadily regressed from his rookie year. Memphis could no longer tolerate him taking shots from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moranja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ja Morant<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Desmond Bane<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>2022-23: Dillon Brooks\u2019 Last Season in Memphis?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooks\u2019 shot attempts decreased this season. It\u2019s just the second season he\u2019s attempted fewer shots per game than the previous year; his injury-shortened second season was the other. Despite taking almost three fewer shots per game, Brooks shot a career-low from the field (39.6%) with his second-lowest mark from three (32.6%). While his one-on-one defense remained elite, he posted the lowest steal and block rates of his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Brooks has put a negative spotlight on himself by courting controversy. From <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uR75zA9k_qw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaking Gary Payton II\u2019s elbow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/guVoo0VsZIc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hitting Donovan Mitchell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-w3TJoakGtk\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the groin, he\u2019s engaged in reckless behavior on the court that has earned him a reputation as a dirty and dangerous player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s also<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/35769523\/dillon-brooks-wants-stay-mad\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earned and embraced the nickname &#8220;Dillon the Villain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Z60SgJmUoic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needlessly needling the NBA\u2019s all-time leading scorer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That number is directly between what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/free-agents\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free agents<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sextoco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Collin Sexton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simonan01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anfernee Simons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commanded annually last season.\u00a0 Who might be interested in his services?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Cap Space Teams<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/cap\/\/?ref=trending-pages\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Spotrac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/rockets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Rockets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/pacers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana Pacers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/spurs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Antonio Spurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/pistons\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Pistons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/thunder\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should easily have the cap space to sign Brooks. Of those teams, the Thunder seem least likely to be interested given Brooks\u2019 similarity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dortlu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luguentz Dort<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spurs rarely sign significant free agents, and seem content to rebuild slowly, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/bucks-epic-flameout-leads-to-questions-about-mike-budenholzers-coaching-future-154246003.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rockets have been linked to bigger names<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like potential free agents<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/middlkh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Khris Middleton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaylen Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (who is signed through 2023-24).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/pistons\/2023\/04\/04\/detroit-pistons-nba-troy-weaver-letter-rebuild\/70081138007\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter to Pistons fans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Detroit GM Troy Weaver wrote,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are in an excellent spot to upgrade our roster this offseason\u2026We\u2019ve positioned ourselves for another high draft choice in this year\u2019s draft, we have a favorable salary cap position, and we\u2019ll continue to talk with teams and evaluate trade opportunities as they present themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooks would help fill the void on the wing after Weaver exchanged<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beysa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Saddiq Bey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wisemja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Wiseman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the trade deadline. Brooks would step in as Detroit\u2019s perimeter defensive stopper, and he fits the culture of toughness historically valued in Detroit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pacers rarely have shown the patience for extended rebuilds. They will likely look to improve the team after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/halibty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyrese Haliburton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s emergence and extending <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnemy01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Myles Turner<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Brooks would step into the Pacers\u2019 gaping hole and small forward, and could be a tough veteran enforcer for Haliburton and the emerging<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mathube01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bennedict Mathurin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Player Option Teams<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on some player option decisions, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/jazz\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah Jazz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/raptors\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Raptors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could both be in play for Brooks. It\u2019s hard to see Utah having interest. The path to the requisite cap space would be painful. At 27, this could be his last chance at a significant NBA contract. He has jeopardized his earning potential but will almost certainly have multiple suitors.
