The Suns outscored the Clippers by 26 points in the third quarter but still struggled to survive a late onslaught. Nonetheless, Phoenix will advance to the second round to face the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/nuggets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denver Nuggets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clippers fought valiantly without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/10\/11\/top-nba-players-2022-23-8-kawhi-leonard\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Kawhi Leonard<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/10\/09\/top-nba-players-2022-23-12-paul-george\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Paul George<\/b><\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they couldn\u2019t overcome the massive talent gap without Leonard. How do the Suns match up against the Nuggets? And what\u2019s in store for the Clippers during another long offseason?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Suns-Clippers Game 5: Devin Booker Sinks the Clippers<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Suns-Clippers: Game 5 First Half<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has been a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/04\/19\/suns-clippers-game-2-kevin-durant-and-devin-booker-lead-phoenix-to-a-commanding-victory\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closely-contested series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even without Leonard, and Game 5 continued in the same vein. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/10\/04\/top-nba-players-2022-23-11-devin-booker\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Devin Booker<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the Suns\u2019 point guard even when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Chris Paul<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was in the game. Booker ran Phoenix\u2019s offense to perfection, as every Phoenix starter besides <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/craigto01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Torrey Craig<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scored in the first six minutes. An explosive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/powelno01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Norman Powell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (11 points in the quarter) combined with the beastly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/z\/zubaciv01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ivica Zubac<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (8 points) to keep LA competitive. The Suns held a scant 32-30 lead at the end of one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The game stayed close in the second quarter as the Clippers continued to fight for their postseason lives. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Deandre Ayton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took advantage of the defensive attention garnered by his teammates and scored 9 in the quarter (18 for the half). Neither team could stop the other, but LA proved to have the more unstoppable offense. The Clippers earned seven more shot attempts (and six more free throws) than the Suns by grabbing ten offensive boards to Phoenix\u2019s 14 defensive rebounds. Booker and Durant led the Suns with incredible shotmaking, and Phoenix hurt the Clippers in the half-court and transition. The Clippers\u2019 answer was to get Durant switched onto Zubac to guard his post-ups, which wasn\u2019t an answer to Phoenix\u2019s dynamism. LA scored just seven points over a seven-minute stretch in the third, and they were helpless to stop the Suns\u2019 avalanche. Phoenix turned the nine-point halftime deficit into a 17-point lead (111-94) heading into the fourth. Surprisingly, Mason Plumlee led a scoring run to start the fourth as the Clippers cut the Phoenix lead to 10 after a Russell Westbrook layup with 6:36 left. Booker finished with 47 as Phoenix held on for the series-clincher.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What\u2019s Next for the Suns<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nuggets ended their series against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/timberwolves\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> victorious, while Phoenix and LA battled. Phoenix lost two games to Denver without Durant and beat them with Durant twice, but the only Denver starter to play in either game was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoaa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Aaron Gordon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phoenix holds a number of theoretical advantages. Booker, Durant, and Paul can abuse Denver\u2019s drop coverage by pulling up from midrange anytime <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nikola Joki\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bruce Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldwke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kentavious Caldwell-Pope<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are good options to guard Booker and Paul, and Gordon will make Durant work, but Denver will have weaker defenders to attack at all times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defensively, Ayton surely will not stop Joki\u0107, but Monty Williams can at least try to have Ayton defend him one-on-one. Durant can play a roving help defender role by sagging off of Gordon. The main concern for Phoenix might be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murraja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jamal Murray<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He matched his pre-injury statistical output this season, and he\u2019s certainly capable of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/N6hEtfUCPPc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scoring outbursts in the playoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Suns don\u2019t have anyone who can defend scoring guards well that can consistently be a threat on offense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This series may come down to Craig and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/okogijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Josh Okogie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Phoenix will need those two to survive defensively against Murray and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Michael Porter Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they\u2019ll need to hit open threes. Paul can be a reluctant three-point shooter, and Ayton doesn\u2019t take them. If one of Craig or Okogie can\u2019t hit threes, the Nuggets will be able to help relentlessly on Booker and Durant. Craig made 10-18 from three in the LA series but didn\u2019t make one in Game 4 or 5. He played only 17 minutes in this game. Okogie played well during his 33 minutes in Game 5 but made only one three during the first four games.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What\u2019s Next for the Clippers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leonard and Paul George have been teammates for four seasons and have delivered more questions than answers regarding their ability to be the best two players on a championship-winning team. They\u2019ve been trending downward after making the conference finals, with a play-in loss last year before this first-round exit. Both Leonard and George can opt out of their contracts after the 2023-24 season as well. Next season could be their last, best chance to win together. Leonard and George will turn 32 in June and 33 in May, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clippers&#8217; front office has no choice but to try reinforcing the supporting cast around Leonard and George. But, they have few avenues available. They will almost assuredly pick up the nearly $21 million non-guaranteed season on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoer01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Eric Gordon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s contract. LA\u2019s cap situation means they\u2019d have no way to replace him if they decline the option. Gordon and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrima03.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Marcus Morris<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are candidates for trades since they\u2019re both on expiring contracts worth enough to get a player making around $20 million in return. They\u2019re both declining players, and the Clippers would need to attach their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/teams\/Clippers\/13\/draft-picks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2028 or 2029 first-round pick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get a valuable player in return. Those are the only first-round picks available to trade after the trade for George.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a creative and active front office that will almost certainly make a trade between now and the 2024 trade deadline. Could the Clippers pry away <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/trades\/IOrMBb4ZLLGQAc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dorian Finney-Smith<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/nets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn Nets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> struggle next season? Perhaps the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/pistons\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Pistons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are willing to trade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/trades\/_fS01HMgyLYkq8\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bojan Bogdanovic<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this off-season? Either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/trades\/DhTt0LMiemZ367\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>CJ McCollum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/trades\/eJ6KfN7P3ZE9Zz\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jordan Clarkson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be an intriguing point guard option.
