A young and hungry team with limited postseason experience aspires to take down an experienced squad with two tried-and-true championship superstars\u2014who just happen to be the underdog this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series is currently tied 1-1, with each team dominating in their respective wins. Here are three takeaways as the series heads to the City of Stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Three Takeaways From the Lakers vs. Grizzlies Playoff Series So Far<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3>Anthony Davis is Key<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days after posting 22 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocks to open the series, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went out and looked more like a backup than a starter. He put up 13 points (4-14 shooting), nine rebounds, five blocks and three assists in a losing effort to Memphis. It was a far cry from his domination inside a few days ago, as the Grizzlies had his number anytime he ventured into the paint or shot a jumper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fact that the Lakers still have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading the way at 38 years old, the King has made it clear time and again that the offense is meant to run through Davis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have seen what AD is capable of in postseasons past as the number one option. Though the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/NOH\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>New Orleans Pelicans<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did not have the same success as LA, Davis averaged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=anthony+davis+career+playoff+stats+2013-14+to+2017-18\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30.5 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in the 2015 and 2018 playoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though he now shares superstar duties with James, AD\u2019s previous production has been equally stellar. He put up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=anthony+davis+career+playoff+stats+2019-20+to+2021-22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the team\u2019s 2020 and 2021 postseason runs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, in a series where the opposition boasts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/36219128\/grizzlies-jaren-jackson-jr-wins-defensive-player-year\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, AD performing at his best is critical if the Lakers want to win the series. Game one was a rarity in the fact that LeBron did not have to drop 40 to give LA a chance. He simply gave Davis the keys, and he delivered (not to discredit the performances of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rui Hachimura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Austin Reaves<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 loss proved what their fans (and the rest of the world) already knew: Davis\u2019s dominance is key in the playoffs. Look for him to bounce back in game three.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3>The Grizzlies Might Be Better Without Ja<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a team that relies on their number one option to a team that\u2026might be better without theirs. Grizzlies fans can blame a host of reasons for their game one blunders, but the team responded with force in game two\u2014notably with their star player sidelined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis had an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/grizzlies-record-without-ja-morant-this-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11-10 record without Morant this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/grizzlies-record-without-ja-morant\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37-24 record without him all-time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There\u2019s no denying that he impacts the Grizzlies significantly. However, Wednesday\u2019s game was a sign of how their role players stepped up when they were needed the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tillmxa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Xavier Tillman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led all Memphis scorers with 22 points, along with 13 rebounds and three assists. Jackson Jr. had 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Guards <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Desmond Bane<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennalu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luke Kennard<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chipped in 17 and 13 points, respectively. And forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dillon Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2023\/04\/19\/dillon-brooks-calls-lebron-james-old-lakers-grizzlies\/11701714002\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who at times has shown more bark than bite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, scored 12 points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the recent home victory, the Grizzlies hope to bring their play and attitude to Los Angeles, where the Lakers host a playoff game with no attendance restrictions for the first time in two years. Depending on Morant&#8217;s status, time will tell if the Grizzlies can back their talk up on the road or if the Lakers can control home court.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3>Role Players: Who Wants it More?<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the Lakers and Grizzlies have a clear duo of stars who carry the team in various categories. However, a big story from the series so far has focused on the contributions of players who can star in their roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In game one, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/04\/11\/los-angeles-lakers-supporting-cast-critical-in-play-in-matchup\/\" target=\"_self\">Lakers\u2019 bench<\/a><\/span> outscored the Grizzlies\u2019 second unit 39-24\u2014thanks in large part to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers\/status\/1647715759798505474\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hachimura\u2019s historic 29 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Reaves combined for 52. In game two, however, the script was flipped. Hachimura led the Lakers bench with 20 points followed by seven points from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaslma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Malik Beasley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Memphis, whose bench scoring was led by Luke Kennard\u2019s 13 points and three triples, also had all of their starters in double figures by the end of the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The playoffs are all about \u201cnext man up\u201d and an \u201call hands on deck\u201d mentality. Every player, from the star to the last benchwarmer, needs to produce night in and night out for a team to have a shot at success. The Lakers and Grizzlies have impressed many with their respective squads, as different as they are. However, when fans aren\u2019t watching the main guys go to work, they should observe how the role players are doing. Who is going up for the second-chance points? Who is hustling to give his team an extra possession? Those factors and more are what go into a successful franchise, where all the little things are magnified in the postseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers and Grizzlies have those types of players\u2014ones who are willing to be scrappy and sacrifice for the betterment of their team.
