How did Memphis win, and what can we expect in Game 3?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lakers-Grizzlies Game 2: No Ja Morant, No Problem<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lakers-Grizzlies: Game 2 Recap<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This game started as a rock fight. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/26\/top-nba-players-2022-23-17-anthony-davis\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was stellar on defense as an at-rim deterrent. The Grizzlies played tremendous team defense led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and kick-started their transition offense with turnovers. Memphis took a 22-11 lead with just over four minutes left in the first when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roddyda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>David Roddy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit a three, then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennalu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luke Kennard<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stole the inbounds and completed a four-point play. Memphis would end the quarter up 30-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Back-to-back threes for the Grizzlies \ud83d\udd25 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QFrCwkf0Kh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/QFrCwkf0Kh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBAonTNT\/status\/1648837825998249986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 19, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Grizzlies continued their aggressive play in the second quarter. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tillmxa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Xavier Tillman Sr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided unexpected offense with 12 first-half points, even spinning and flinging a couple of layups in over Davis. The Lakers weren\u2019t able to score reliably as the Grizzlies pushed the lead to 15 at halftime.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AY MANE. Memphis piled up giveaways and went cold from three. The Lakers got creative spacing Jackson\u2019s man away from the basket and converted shots at the rim. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rui Hachimura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided a boost for a second straight game, but Memphis showed composure and made a late run. They took an 83-71 lead into the fourth quarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James started to find a rhythm posting up in the third, and that continued early in the fourth. Memphis\u2019 motion offense generated enough good looks to support their stifling defense with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Desmond Bane<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyus Jones<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the helm. Bane in particular was able to set up teammates curling off screens and getting downhill with bullying, shoulder-first drives. Bane helped close the game by going 4-4 from the line in 30 seconds around the 3:00 mark of the fourth quarter. Los Angeles looked frenetic trying to keep up with Memphis\u2019 pace, evidenced by committing 5 turnovers in the first quarter. They would never seriously threaten Memphis after the slow start. Having guards screen for James could force Memphis\u2019 guards like Jones, Bane, or Kennard to switch onto him. He should be able to cause problems for the Grizzlies by posting those players up or using his strength to drive through them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darvin Ham will also need to address the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issue at some point. Russell is shooting 9-28 overall in this series, including 4-14 from three. He has 11 assists to five turnovers, isn\u2019t making an impact on defense, and after Game 2 gave some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BleacherReport\/status\/1649068481541799936\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerning quotes about his role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ham could consider starting either hot-shooting Hachimura or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/browntr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Troy Brown Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Russell. James and Austin Reaves can handle the ball, and the increased size should cause Memphis issues on offense. Russell can try to get a rhythm against Kennard and hide on defense against Roddy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/konchjo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>John Konchar<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Memphis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dillon Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 fouls were again an issue, as he played just over 22 minutes with 5 fouls in Game 2. Taylor Jenkins could give Tillman the task of guarding James at times in order to save Brooks\u2019 fouls and keep him on the court. Tillman switched onto James on the perimeter and held up decently well, and he has the options of funneling James towards Jackson at the rim. Tillman can also match James\u2019 strength in the post.
