With dysfunction eternally surrounding Durant, it\u2019s worth remembering he\u2019s a two-time Finals MVP and regular season MVP. He has the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leaders\/pts_per_g_career.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth-highest per-game scoring average<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of all time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (just ahead of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). With average health, he should move up somewhere between 10th-13th on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leaders\/pts_career.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of the highest scorers in NBA history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, next to legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Oscar Robertson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Durant has been part of that dysfunction with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/nets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn Nets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He cannot be blamed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/28\/top-nba-players-2022-23-15-kyrie-irving\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Kyrie Irving<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s unavailability, and the reasons for his absences, but he did plan to team up with Irving in the 2019-2020 offseason. Durant also pushed GM Sean Marks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/05\/revisiting-the-james-harden-to-brooklyn-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade for<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/22\/top-nba-players-2022-23-19-james-harden\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but could not help create an environment Harden would want to play within for longer than one season. With <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/08\/25\/expectations-for-the-brooklyn-nets-with-kevin-durant-back\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durant seemingly back in Brooklyn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the entire season after management was unable to find a fitting trade, what\u2019s in store for Durant and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/22\/brooklyn-nets-2022-2023-season-preview\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nets this season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Top NBA Players 2022-23: #5 Kevin Durant<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Kevin Durant\u2019s 2022-2023 Season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durant turned 34 a couple of weeks ago, and despite his age, his on-court contributions remain unassailable. He averaged 29.9 points per game last season to keep Brooklyn afloat amid injuries and Irving\u2019s extended absence. That was his highest mark since his 2013-14 MVP season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like his teammate Irving, Durant is absurdly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/shooting?DistanceRange=By+Zone&amp;PerMode=Totals&amp;TeamID=1610612751\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficient from every spot on the court<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His tight handle, size, and elite shooting ability mean there is no such thing as a bad Durant shot. Most notably, Durant shot 55.5% on 407 midrange field goal attempts last season. Only five other players could reach 50% from the midrange on at least 150 attempts (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jrue Holiday<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aldrila01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LaMarcus Aldridge<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Trae Young<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Chris Paul<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Seth Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Durant has proven he can dominate an entire postseason with his scoring ability as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durant has long been an underrated defender, and he helped Brooklyn remain respectable on that end when healthy as they finished <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleaningtheglass.com\/stats\/league\/summary?season=2021&amp;seasontype=regseason&amp;start=10\/1\/2021&amp;end=10\/15\/2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st last season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When Brooklyn\u2019s offense fulfills its potential, the Nets can be content with mediocrity on defense. Certain teams that finished below them on defense like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/bulls\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago Bulls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/balllo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Lonzo Ball<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carusal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Alex Caruso<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/hawks\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta Hawks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/capelca01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Clint Capela<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) had better players to build defenses around, as well. It\u2019s impossible to get around Durant with his length and lateral quickness, and his intelligence makes him an impactful help defender when motivated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durant can struggle with the physical aspects of the game. He\u2019s no boxout artist, and he mostly looks to slip to the rim or quickly pop out when tasked with setting a screen. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/warriors\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State Warriors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had much more success having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Stephen Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screen for Durant than the other way around, for example. Still, this feels like nitpicking when it comes to discussing the all-time great\u2019s talents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Kevin Durant\u2019s Outlook with the Nets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FGfpozV9ry0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Durant alluded to \u201cuncertainty\u201d playing a role in his decision to request a trade. Unfortunately, it\u2019s hard to see from where else on the roster stability will come. Irving and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ben Simmons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team\u2019s second and third-best players, have numerous availability issues. Irving\u2019s temperament is unpredictable, and Simmons is returning from the back injury that kept him out all last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instability doesn\u2019t stop with those two. New acquisition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/warretj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>T.J. Warren<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a talented two-way wing who last played in Dec. 2020. Knockdown shooter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joe Harris<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played in just 14 games last season after having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/34592375\/brooklyn-nets-joe-harris-fully-healthy-feeling-great-injury-plagued-2021-22-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ankle surgeries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in November and March. Brooklyn is dependent on small, aging guards <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/millspa02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Patty Mills<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Seth Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and Irving). They need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/claxtni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nic Claxton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sharpda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Day\u2019Ron Sharpe<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who have started a combined 28 total NBA games, to platoon at center. Both are non-shooters who project to be poor on-court fits with Simmons. It remains to be seen how well trade acquisition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/onealro01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Royce O\u2019Neale<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can defend when he isn\u2019t sharing a uniform with perennial DPOY candidate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goberru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rudy Gobert<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durant\u2019s own health and availability are significant concerns as well. He played fewer than half of Brooklyn\u2019s regular season games in 2020-21 and missed 27 last season. He\u2019s fully recovered from the torn Achilles suffered in the 2019 Finals, but it\u2019s unclear whether Durant can stay healthy for roughly 70 regular season games and the playoffs. Brooklyn won\u2019t reach their goals if he cannot stay on the court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than that, things are great! With good health, this would be the deepest roster surrounding Durant in Brooklyn since the Harden trade. Durant will need to be a true on-court leader for this team to realize its potential. Brooklyn won\u2019t be substantially more talented than the rest of the NBA this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Last Word on Kevin Durant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one could possibly know what\u2019s in store for Durant and the Nets this season. Durant is an all-time great, and there\u2019s no reason to believe he\u2019ll slow down on the court when available. Availability is a key issue surrounding Durant at this point in his career, however. As outlined above, he\u2019s surrounded by players with similar injury risks as well, casting doubt upon how well the Nets can play during a Durant absence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s the possibility of a true career renaissance, however. Irving, freed from vaccine requirements and needing a new contract, could arrive focused and ready to be the supplementary star Brooklyn needs. Simmons, Harris, and Warren could be healthy and provide the two-way play on the wings the Nets need. It\u2019s easy to see an Irving-Simmons two-man game setting Durant up with the easiest shots he\u2019s received since his time with Golden State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn has championship upside, and Durant could certainly win the second <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/15\/early-nba-mvp-predictions\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MVP award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of his career. Brooklyn could also falter under the weight of injury and expectation, and Durant could be left demanding a trade again before Christmas.
