Embiid went from missing his first two seasons due to injury to consecutive second-place finishes in MVP voting to back-to-back MVP <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nikola Joki\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He enters this season surrounded by arguably the most cohesive supporting cast of his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embiid also enters the season bearing the brunt of enormous team expectations. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/76ers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs in his career. Unfortunate injuries and flawed teammates have played their roles in those disappointing finishes. The latter, at least, shouldn\u2019t be an issue this season. What will Embiid have in store for his opponents?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Top NBA Players 2022-23: #6 Joel Embiid<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Joel Embiid\u2019s Game<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embiid and his contemporary Joki\u0107 have redefined how a center can create offense. Both are adept post-up artists, and Embiid presents the most menacing physical presence on the block since prime Shaquille O\u2019Neal. In addition, both can handle the ball above the three-point line to create shots for themselves and their teammates. They lead a revolution as significant to the game as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Stephen Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forever warping the geometry of the court. Embiid and Joki\u0107 are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/international\/players\/victor-wembanyama-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Victor Wembanyama<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s forbearers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a tad <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Jne9t8sHpUc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ironic (don\u2019t ya think?)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then, that a full season teaming with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/22\/top-nba-players-2022-23-19-james-harden\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means Embiid will be required to create his own offense away from the basket far less often than in the past two seasons. Harden and the emerging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maxeyty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyrese Maxey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partner to form the most threatening perimeter attack in Philly since the days of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/10\/05\/top-nba-players-jimmy-butler\/\" target=\"_self\"><b>Jimmy Butler<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embiid is simply dominant on offense. He can either batter opponents physically, or use his balletic footwork to dance to the basket. He made a staggering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/shooting?DistanceRange=By+Zone&amp;PerMode=Totals&amp;TeamID=1610612755\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73.5% of his shots at the basket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last season. The 7\u20190\u201d, 280-pound center complemented that by shooting 37% from three, with few attempts in the shorter corners. Embiid took <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022_per_minute.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 4 threes per 36 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last season, which is closer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mikal Bridges<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or teammate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrito02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tobias Harris<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the average center.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you could make the case that Embiid is better on defense than offense! The 76ers were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleaningtheglass.com\/stats\/league\/summary?season=2021&amp;seasontype=regseason&amp;start=10\/1\/2021&amp;end=10\/15\/2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tied for 10th in defense last season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> despite the absence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ben Simmons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That meant Embiid, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thybuma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matisse Thybulle<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danny Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the only plus defenders in the rotation. In addition, Maxey, Harden, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Seth Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave opponents multiple players to attack all season. Embiid is one of the game\u2019s best rim protectors, and those light feet help him hold up defending the perimeter when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Joel Embiid\u2019s 2022-2023 Season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sixers did solid work <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/08\/11\/nba-offseason-grades-eastern-conference\/\" target=\"_self\">this offseason<\/a> and enter with great expectations. Their success begins and ends with Embiid, obviously, but he\u2019s surrounded by talent that makes more sense than in years past. Embiid\u2019s presence lessens the defensive attention on Harden, who in turn should be able to set Embiid up for better shots than any previous teammate. Maxey\u2019s youthful exuberance can carry the offense for extended regular-season stretches. Any team that calls Harris a fourth option has a wealth of offensive talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New additions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckepj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>P.J. Tucker<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meltode01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>De\u2019Anthony Melton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/23\/nba-trade-grades-melton-to-the-76ers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquired via draft-night trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are defense-leaning role players who can shoot well enough to be guarded on offense. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houseda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danuel House Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harremo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Montrezl Harrell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue the Houston reunion theme, the latter representing an incredible luxury for the Sixers to have on nights when Embiid sits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNights when Embiid sits\u201d&#8230;how many of those will there be, exactly? Despite Embiid being squarely in his prime (he turns 29 in March), this season feels like it could go two distinct ways. Will Embiid see the talent around him, arrive in the best shape of his career, and dominate throughout the regular season en route to a much-deserved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/15\/early-nba-mvp-predictions\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MVP award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Or will Embiid see the talent around him, realize he can play at about 75% capacity and still secure a top-4 seed for his team, and save himself for the playoffs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embiid played <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022_totals.html#totals_stats::mp\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2297 minutes last season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 46th in the league. He proved his durability in a season defined by league-wide COVID protocol absences and numerous injuries after two seasons of compressed scheduling. Either outcome is justifiable for Embiid, particularly when he\u2019s suffered multiple postseason injuries in his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Last Word on Joel Embiid<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embiid enters this season with little surrounding drama, a rarity in his career so far. There may be some lingering concerns about Harden\u2019s hamstring, or how all the new pieces will mesh, but there\u2019s no storyline issue with which to contend. The only concerns for Embiid are to win an MVP and a championship. Simple, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be health concerns because those will surround Embiid for the rest of his career. If he can stay healthy, there\u2019s nothing preventing him from showing a post-first player can be the first option on a championship team. He can also demonstrate he\u2019s the type of center who remains effective on defense against a smaller opponent in the playoffs.
