In just the past month, we\u2019ve broken down the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/rockets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Rockets <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/08\/15\/grading-the-james-harden-to-houston-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading for<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has now reunited with Daryl Morey with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/76ers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/celtics\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Celtics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 ill-fated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/08\/17\/grading-the-kyrie-irving-to-boston-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade for<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kyrie Irving<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the historically-significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luka Don\u010di\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Trae Young<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/08\/24\/grading-the-luka-doncic-and-trae-young-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">draft night trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and, finally, we came full circle by discussing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/05\/revisiting-the-james-harden-to-brooklyn-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harden\u2019s short-lived<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/nets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn Nets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trade for Leonard in the 2018 offseason was franchise-altering for Toronto. It also slammed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/spurs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Antonio Spurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 window for title contention, which started when Tim Duncan was drafted in 1997. Few trades have had the historical impact of this deal, and even fewer offer such a complete education of the NBA\u2019s trade economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Revisiting the Toronto Raptors&#8217; Trade for Kawhi Leonard<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Terms of the Deal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/24128461\/toronto-raptors-agree-deal-acquire-kawhi-leonard-trade-involves-demar-derozan\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trade<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Raptors received: Kawhi Leonard, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danny Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, $5 million cash<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Antonio Spurs received: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/derozde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>DeMar DeRozan<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poeltja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jakob Poeltl<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the no. 30 pick in the 2019 draft; Spurs selected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnske04.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Keldon Johnson<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>The San Antonio Spurs\u2019 Trade Grade: B<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spurs\u2019 haul for Leonard may seem a bit underwhelming on the surface. Johnson has solidified himself as a starter after earning a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/keldon-johnson-agrees-to-4-year-extension-with-spurs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contract extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to stay in San Antonio. However, Poeltl has only made gradual improvements on offense while playing capable (but not All-Defensive team-level) defense as a starter. DeRozan is a potent scorer, but his best season after this trade didn\u2019t come in a Spurs uniform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, the very next offseason, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/pelicans\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Orleans Pelicans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received three first-round picks, the right to swap picks, and young players headlined by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ingrabr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Brandon Ingram<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/balllo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Lonzo Ball<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after trading <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Davis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/lakers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Then, the Pelicans received two first-round picks and two pick swaps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/pelicans-acquire-steven-adams-eric-bledsoe-in-4-team-trade-jrue-holiday-to-milwaukee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after trading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jrue Holiday<\/b><\/a> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/bucks\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Spurs made a series of savvy moves after this deal. San Antonio <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/chicago\/bulls\/bulls-free-agency-grading-sign-and-trade-demar-derozan\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign-and-traded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> DeRozan to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/bulls\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago Bulls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in exchange for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 first-round pick, second-round picks in 2022 and 2025, and veterans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aminual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Al-Farouq Aminu<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngth01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Thaddeus Young<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/33260476\/sources-toronto-raptors-send-goran-dragic-picks-san-antonio-spurs-thad-young-drew-eubanks-pick\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spurs then sent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Young, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/eubandr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Drew Eubanks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a 2022 second-round pick to Toronto for the no. 20 pick in the 2022 draft while taking on (and buying out) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dragigo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Goran Dragi\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Spurs selected another high-upside guard, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/branhma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Malaki Branham<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Toronto\u2019s pick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In exchange for Leonard and Green, the Spurs have acquired 3 first-round picks (Johnson, Branham, and Chicago\u2019s 2025 selection), a quality starting center in Poeltl, and an extra second-round pick for good measure. The Spurs\u2019 overall return is even more impressive considering Leonard played only 9 games in the prior season due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clipperholics.com\/2019\/12\/10\/someone-doesnt-understand-clippers-managment-kawhi-leonard-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendinopathy issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, one wonders if this deal could have been made without the inclusion of Green, who was and is a valued veteran role player with championship credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Toronto Raptors\u2019 Trade Grade: A+<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No need to overthink this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Raptors\u2019 acquisition of Leonard started a trend of teams seeing immediate dividends after making offseason trades for All-Star level players. Both the Lakers and Bucks won titles after making the trades for Davis and Holiday mentioned above, just like Toronto. Only the Raptors acquired the MVP of their championship team, however, and GM Masai Ujiri also got a capable starter and game finisher in Green in the deal. Ujiri and the Raptors could not have done more to convince Leonard to stay in Toronto; it isn\u2019t their fault the two-time Finals MVP chose to play closer to home in LA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also commendable they were able to include Poeltl in the deal instead of their young forward prospects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/siakapa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Pascal Siakam<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anunoog01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>OG Anunoby<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Siakam, of course, was a major part of that title run and has grown into an All-NBA level player. Anunoby\u2019s lockdown defense has lived up to its promise, he shoots 37% from three for his career and just scored 17 points a game as a supplementary offensive weapon in Toronto. Both players are more impactful than Poeltl and play a much more valued position. Anunoby staying in Toronto also led to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wiIAUeraFJo\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this argument about fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ibakase01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Serge Ibaka<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reason enough for this trade to earn an \u201cA+.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re continuing our series of articles revisiting past deals by analyzing the Toronto Raptors\u2019 trade for Kawhi Leonard.
