{"id":48388,"date":"2022-09-10T15:00:53","date_gmt":"2022-09-10T19:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=48388"},"modified":"2022-09-10T15:00:53","modified_gmt":"2022-09-10T19:00:53","slug":"franz-wagner-orlandos-breakout-sophomore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/09\/10\/franz-wagner-orlandos-breakout-sophomore\/","title":{"rendered":"Franz Wagner: Orlando&#8217;s Breakout Sophomore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Orlando Magic have stocked up on draft talent in recent years, helping their rebuild by taking notable players such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bambamo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mo Bamba<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoco01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cole Anthony<\/strong><\/a>, and now <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banchpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paolo Banchero<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last name on the list is projected by many to have a major impact on the team as a rookie; however, he might not be the only one with the spotlight shining on him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Orlando&#8217;s Breakout Sophomore: Franz Wagner<\/h2>\n<h3>Enter Franz Wagner<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wagnefr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Franz Wagner<\/strong><\/a>, the eighth pick in last year\u2019s draft and younger brother of center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wagnemo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Moe Wagner<\/strong><\/a>, averaged 15.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 79 games as a rookie.\u00a0 He was efficient, too, shooting 46.8% from the field, 35.4% from three, and 86.3% from the free-throw line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner was solid as a rookie, but he\u2019s been a summer sensation overseas.\u00a0 He has the potential to break out for the Magic next season, growing the game as a standout international player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 21-year-old has spent his offseason with the German national team as part of Eurobasket, and his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiba.basketball\/eurobasket\/2022\/player\/Franz-Wagner\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show his continued growth and promise heading into his second year.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TwfN5NmMTTI\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He erupted for 32 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with eight threes in a narrow double-overtime win over Lithuania.\u00a0 He also had eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.\u00a0 Additionally, Wagner has shot 50% from three (2.2 makes versus 4.4 attempts) while averaging 1.4 steals and 1 block per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Wagner&#8217;s Growth Bodes Well for Orlando<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner\u2019s offensive talent has not gone unnoticed, as he consistently found ways to impact the game as a driver and shooter.\u00a0 He has also made strides as a playmaking forward, which will be pivotal for the Magic next season.\u00a0 Defensively, his length at 6\u201910\u201d is a major boost, and his confidence in protecting the paint is an equally important trait.\u00a0 Again, being a great player is all about starring in your role, which Wagner has done to a tee since his days at Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a team filled with guards and big men, Wagner looks to capitalize on opportunities as a 3-and-D wing next year.\u00a0 He showed glimpses of it last season, performing very well despite the Magic only winning 22 games.\u00a0 Some notable games from his rookie year include a career-high 38 points against the Bucks in December, as well as two double-doubles against the Nets and Wizards, respectively.
