We\u2019ve previously discussed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/22\/free-agency-winners\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest winners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the NBA\u2019s free agency period. Now, we move on to the teams that have inspired our biggest questions to be answered this upcoming season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These teams all made the playoffs last season around young stars but will field revamped rosters next season, and not always by choice. Will those changes lead to improved team success next season or beyond?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>NBA Offseason Questions<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Minnesota Timberwolves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/timberwolves\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/01\/grading-the-rudy-gobert-to-the-timberwolves-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stunning trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goberru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rudy Gobert<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this NBA offseason was seismic and will define this franchise for the next decade. The draft assets (detailed in the previous link) are massive, and the Wolves lost shooting with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beverpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Patrick Beverley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaslma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Malik Beasley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moving to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/jazz\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah Jazz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Minnesota built the NBA\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleaningtheglass.com\/stats\/league\/summary\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seventh-best offense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in part by shooting threes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the second-highest rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdanja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaden McDaniels<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shoots 33.8% from three for his career and will likely start in place of Beverley (a 37.8% career clip). New addition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kyle Anderson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will further cramp things, as he shoots just 33.4% and replaces Beasley\u2019s 38.6% career mark. Beasley\u2019s absence will be painful as he became one of the top perimeter threats in the league by averaging over eight three-point attempts per game in Minnesota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wolves hope Gobert\u2019s rim protection will lead to a defensive improvement that more than offsets any decline in offense. It\u2019s inaccurate to compare the Gobert-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/townska01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Karl Anthony-Towns<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> duo to the frontcourts with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/celtics\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Celtics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/grizzlies\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however. Those teams play two bigs from a position of strength: all four of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/horfoal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Al Horford<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/williro04.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Robert Williams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/adamsst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Steven Adams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can protect the rim well. Towns allowed the Grizzlies to make 65.4% shots at the rim <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/defense-dash-lt6\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;sort=LT_06_PCT&amp;dir=1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the playoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making him closer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vucevni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nikola Vu\u010devi\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than those four on defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will Minnesota\u2019s improved defense offset any possible declines on offense? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edwaran01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Edwards<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> handling the ball more and turning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into an off-ball shooter could help. Will that lead to enough winning to justify the Gobert trade? Finding out will be fascinating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Atlanta Hawks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/hawks\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta Hawks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/21\/atlanta-hawks-a-trade-is-needed\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what many wanted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this NBA offseason and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/30\/san-antonio-trades-murray-to-atlanta\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">executed a trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will reshape their team&#8217;s identity. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dejounte Murray<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives Atlanta a second ball-handler to diversify the offense around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Trae Young<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In many ways, this is a lesser version of the Gobert-Minnesota trade. Murray is good but hasn\u2019t matched Gobert\u2019s impact to date. Then again, Atlanta did not have to surrender as many picks. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/01\/trade-grades-atlanta-hawks-trade-kevin-huerter-to-sacramento\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawks also traded<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/huertke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kevin Huerter<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacramento Kings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to clear Murray\u2019s way in the starting lineup and replace a draft pick they sent out in the Murray deal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta likely made this move to improve their defense. Murray immediately becomes their best and most reliable perimeter defender, and he can cover for Young much better than Huerter on that end. The deal\u2019s success will be determined by how well the point guards fit offensively. Can Young overhaul his game for the benefit of the team? Murray will need to handle the ball as much or more than Young for the offense to work. Last season, Young\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Took just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/catch-shoot\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*young\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one catch-and-shoot three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a game (shooting 48.1% on these, 38.2% overall)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was third in the entire league taking 12 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/pullup\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;sort=PULL_UP_FGA&amp;dir=1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pull-up (self-created) shots per game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/touches\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;sort=TIME_OF_POSS&amp;dir=1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held the ball longer than all but two players<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/touches\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;sort=AVG_DRIB_PER_TOUCH&amp;dir=1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Averaged more dribbles per touch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than any player in the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murray probably won\u2019t be able to consistently space the floor for Young. He made just 34.5% of his 2.5 catch-and-shoot threes last season. Having Young off the ball creates more driving lanes for everyone, and Murray could improve significantly by driving into the open space. Murray has only known the cramped confines of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/spurs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Antonio Spurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offense during his pro career. Atlanta was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-best three-point shooting team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the league last season and averaged about 3.5 more attempts per game than 18th-ranked San Antonio.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dallas Mavericks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issues started last year for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/mavericks\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Mavericks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/33801390\/nba-playoffs-2022-jalen-brunson-star-turn-dallas-mavericks-massive-free-agency-implications\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they did not offer<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brunsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jalen Brunson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a contract extension after he struggled against the LA Clippers in the 2021 playoffs. Brunson emerged as their second-best player last season. He led Dallas to a 2-1 series lead against the Utah Jazz in the first round despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luka Don\u010di\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missing those games with injury. Brunson\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/30\/knicks-cleared-cap-space-for-jalen-brunson\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move to the New York Knicks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> severely weakens this roster, and the Mavericks had no cap space to sign a replacement. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Spencer Dinwiddie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely start in Brunson\u2019s place, but who will provide bench scoring?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Wood<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after Dallas dealt for him before draft night. This trade isn\u2019t a clear win like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/01\/trade-grades-boston-celtics-trade-for-malcolm-brogdon\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that saw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brogdma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Malcolm Brogdon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> join the Celtics. Wood has played for six teams in six NBA seasons and bounced around the G League. He has never made the playoffs or even been on a team trying to make the playoffs late in the regular season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood has defensive questions but should play center, where he has more matchup advantages on offense than at forward. So it\u2019s unclear why Dallas also signed the backup center of the team they defeated in the second round of the playoffs (the Phoenix Suns) in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgeeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>JaVale McGee<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. McGee is 34, signed a three-year contract with Dallas, and has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UM_G8Rgq2eA?t=173\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised a starting position<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas just made the Western Conference Finals on the back of their small lineup. They scrambled to cover massive amounts of ground on defense and spaced the floor for Don\u010di\u0107 on offense. Dallas benched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poweldw01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dwight Powell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/klebima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Maxi Kleber<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who will lose minutes to Wood and McGee. They may look to move Powell, the longest-tenured player on their roster, due to financial constraints.
