We\u2019ve seen enough to pick our free agency winners, as well as teams that left us with more questions than answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This exercise will focus on projecting team performance next season (with one notable exception). These teams may not win more games in the regular season but have improved their chances in the postseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All contract terms are taken from <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotrac<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>NBA Free Agency Winners<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Undrafted and Unhearalded Players Getting Paid in Free Agency<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most heartening development in NBA free agency was the number of lowly-regarded players who earned life-changing money. The Oklahoma City Thunder rewarded the undrafted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dortlu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luguentz Dort<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a five-year, $82.5 million deal (year five is a team option). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paytoga02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Gary Payton II<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coffeam01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Amir Coffey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are other undrafted players who signed new contracts this offseason. Newly-crowned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/01\/gary-payton-ii-signs-with-the-portland-trail-blazers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA champion Payton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returns to Oregon on a three-year deal worth over $26 million after playing college ball at Oregon State. Payton received a player option in the third year. Coffey parlayed his \u201ccup of coffee\u201d (sorry) with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/clippers\/\" target=\"_self\">LA Clippers<\/a> into a three-year agreement worth $11 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even veteran <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckepj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>P.J. Tucker<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just signed the single largest contract of his career, a contract worth over $33 million over three years. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/30\/pj-tucker-signs-with-the-philadelphia-76ers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37-year-old Tucker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also opt out of the final year of his deal in hopes of negotiating a larger contract. That\u2019s tremendous for a 2006 second-round pick who spent five years playing internationally before seizing a role in the NBA. These are the clear free agency winners from a player\u2019s perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Philadelphia 76ers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the biggest free agency winners in the NBA from a team perspective. No team did more to improve their chances of postseason success than the Sixers. They\u2019re coming off two straight second-round exits, and they were significant favorites over Atlanta in 2021 before being upset by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/tag\/atlanta-hawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Hawks<\/a> (and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ben Simmons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wo_LsStmPxg\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disinterest in layups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joel Embiid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s injuries have contributed to their defeats, but GM Daryl Morey sorely needed to upgrade the roster around the perennial MVP candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morey earned his place on this list of winners, aided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a>\u2019s assumed pay cut. Tucker slots in as a perfect frontcourt partner for Embiid. He shot <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/shooting\/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;DistanceRange=By%20Zone&amp;sort=Corner%203%20FGM&amp;dir=1&amp;PerMode=Totals\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41.3% on his corner threes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last season and can guard high-scoring forwards and the occasional center. Tucker\u2019s boxouts will help a team that was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mediocre at grabbing defensive rebounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we know Embiid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nba.nbcsports.com\/2022\/05\/13\/joel-embiid-on-tough-p-j-tucker-id-be-lying-if-i-said-that-weve-had-those-types-of-guys\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appreciates his toughness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houseda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danuel House Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a lesser version of Tucker who can hit an open three and hold up defensively in tough matchups, and he provides essential depth. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meltode01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>De\u2019Anthony Melton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was acquired for the no. 23 pick (which became <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roddyda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>David Roddy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the injured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danny Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We went in-depth on the trade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/23\/nba-trade-grades-melton-to-the-76ers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Melton\u2019s turnover creation makes him an intriguing potential partner to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maxeyty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyrese Maxey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those two could lead the transition attack for the Sixers, which played at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sixth-slowest pace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Denver Nuggets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nuggets had a lost season thanks to injuries to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murraja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jamal Murray<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Michael Porter Jr.<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serbian wizard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nikola Joki\u0107<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won his second consecutive MVP award, but the short-handed Nuggets bowed out in the first round to the Golden State Warriors. New GM Calvin Booth had a fruitful NBA free agency period and bolstered the roster around those three scorers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bruce Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joins the team after spending the last two seasons screening and rolling for whichever superstars were available in Brooklyn. Brown is a solid defender who credibly defends larger wings despite his 6\u20194\u201d height. Joki\u0107\u2019s offensive genius can help cover for Brown\u2019s unreliable shooting; he shot 40.4% from three last season but just 28.8% in 2020-21. The thought of Brown or the returning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoaa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Aaron Gordon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screening for Joki\u0107 with shooters around them is enough to make basketball nerds pass out from excitement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldwke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kentavious Caldwell-Pope<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be one of those shooters after coming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/29\/trade-grades-denver-nuggets-and-washington-wizards-swap-guards\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a trade from Washington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He shot 39% from deep last season and should get even easier looks in Denver. Caldwell-Pope projects as the primary defender against scoring guards. His ability to fight through screens will be crucial with Joki\u0107\u2019s inability to consistently defend the three-point line. Denver must agree, as they just signed Caldwell-Pope <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/1547397689633132545\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a contract extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019ll hope both new defenders can stick to shooters better and reduce the number of threes their opponents take. Denver was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just average<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in terms of the number of attempted threes allowed, the number of threes opponents made, and overall defensive rating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denver\u2019s depth will be tested without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrimo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Monte Morris<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available to step in for Murray as he recovers from his torn ACL. The decision to sign <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>DeAndre Jordan<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of re-signing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couside01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>DeMarcus Cousins<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mlovewrites\/status\/1542630383727943681\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was puzzling as well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, Denver has greatly improved their defensive potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Boston Celtics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Boston Celtics have shown a willingness to join their Finals opponents, the Golden State Warriors, in the luxury tax. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/07\/01\/trade-grades-boston-celtics-trade-for-malcolm-brogdon\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade for<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brogdma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Malcolm Brogdon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> essentially guarantees the Celtics will be making prohibitive luxury tax payments next season, and likely future seasons as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily for the leprechauns, the moves they made will greatly improve their chances of making a second consecutive trip to the Finals. Brogdon should help the turnover issues Boston had in the playoffs. The Sixers were the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/playoffs\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only team to commit more giveaways in the playoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while advancing past the first round. Last season Brogdon committed 2.3 turnovers per 36 minutes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/BOS\/2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaylen Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jayson Tatum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Marcus Smart. When he\u2019s not steadying the Celtics by handling the ball, he\u2019ll improve the spacing for Boston\u2019s cramped offense. He shot 42.6% from three for the Bucks in 2018-19 when set up by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He should improve on his 31.2% clip from last year with increased catch-and-shoot opportunities and better health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics\u2019 improved depth will help them manage everyone\u2019s minutes during the regular season as they prepare for a deep playoff run. Boston also signed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gallida01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danilo Gallinari<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is aging but should provide scoring off the bench in the regular season. The only rotation player they lost was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/theisda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Daniel Theis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
