Who won the deal?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>NBA Trade Grades: Melton to the 76ers<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Terms of the Deal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis gets: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/david-roddy-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>David Roddy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (no. 23 pick from Philadelphia), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Danny Green<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia gets: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meltode01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>De\u2019Anthony Melton<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Philadelphia 76ers Grade: A-<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is solid work from 76ers\u2019 president of basketball operations Daryl Morey. The 76ers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs despite having MVP runner-up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joel Embiid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the team. The lack of perimeter defense was a big reason why, in addition to Embiid\u2019s injuries and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Harden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s lackluster production. Melton steps in as a tremendously helpful guard defender. He can guard either guard spot and will fit nicely with either Harden or the emerging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maxeyty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyrese Maxey<\/b><\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Head coach Doc Rivers will be able to play all three together at times as well given Melton\u2019s defensive playmaking and Harden\u2019s post defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Philadelphia does <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PompeyOnSixers\/status\/1540105599244959748\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade defensive stalwart<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thybuma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matisse Thybulle<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Melton can usurp his role as a defensive playmaker who generates steals. Unlike Thybulle, Melton is a threat from outside and averages 36% shooting from three for his career. Whoever Philadephia would have selected at 23 likely wouldn\u2019t have cracked Rivers\u2019 rotation. Green tore his ACL and LCL during the loss to Miami, and will likely miss the rest of this upcoming season. This is a low price for a solid player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why an A- and not an A? Melton is significantly smaller than Thybulle and Green, and can\u2019t hold up as well against big wings. He\u2019s more of a help defender than a one-on-one stopper and could get taken advantage of by the top guards. Still, it\u2019s hard to find a better fit for this trade package than Melton.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Memphis Grizzlies Grade: C<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis has remained notably patient in its team-building strategy despite reaching the playoffs the last two years. After breaking through into the postseason in 2021, they promptly traded their starting center to move up in the draft. Now, they\u2019ve traded an established rotation piece for another draft pick to add to their young core.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/16\/golden-state-warriors-beat-memphis-grizzlies-and-return-to-west-finals\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously discussed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the possibility of Memphis trading a rotation player before offering Ja Morant an expensive contract extension. Was this the correct move to make, though? Melton was productive and signed for just over $16 million over the next two seasons. His three-point shooting and defense make him an ideal role player, and Memphis could regret not trading <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dillon Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after his shot selection hurt them in their playoff loss to the Warriors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/06\/06\/david-roddy-2022-nba-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profiled Roddy previously<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and his strength and post-scoring make him an intriguing fit next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s rim protection and outside shooting. Roddy was projected to be drafted in the second round in most mock drafts.
