The series starts in San Francisco since the Warriors clinched home-court advantage with a superior regular-season record. However, Dallas beat Golden State in three of their four matchups despite being the lower seed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The season series comes with asterisks on both sides, however. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greendr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Draymond Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missed three of these games due to injury, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Klay Thompson<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was available for just two. Two games took place before Dallas\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kristaps Porzi\u0146\u0123is<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trade, which brought in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Spencer Dinwiddie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertada01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u0101vis Bert\u0101ns<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a matchup few expected, and the lack of prior information makes the prospect of this series particularly exciting. So who will win the Western Conference Finals? This series\u2019 key questions are below, along with our prediction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Western Conference Finals Preview: Warriors vs. Mavericks<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Can Luka Don\u010di\u0107 be stopped?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the key question of the Western Conference Finals. It could be the question every team in the league has to answer for the next decade. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Lebron James<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held the mantle of \u201cplayer who can guarantee an elite offense no matter his supporting cast\u201d in his prime, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luka Don\u010di\u0107<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has assumed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one weakness in Don\u010di\u0107\u2019s offensive game is shooting. He finished 35.3% from three and 74.4% from the free-throw line on his way to 28.4 points per game (PPG)\u00a0 this season. Those numbers are in line with his career averages, but the Warriors wouldn\u2019t know. Don\u010di\u0107 flamb\u00e9ed Golden State en route to 31.5 PPG in just 34.5 minutes. His averages increased to 38.2% from three and 87.5% from the line while playing like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/02\/ten-best-playoff-players-left-in-the-nba-postseason\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best player in the NBA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wiggian01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andrew Wiggins<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely be the primary Don\u010di\u0107 defenders, with Green likely to get some stints late in close games. Dallas is unafraid to let Don\u010di\u0107 attack in isolation and will set screens for him repeatedly. Wiggins and Thompson will need to have the strength to fight for position in the post and get through screens and the mobility to stay in front of Don\u010di\u0107\u2019s drives. If they execute, the reward is chasing to contest a step-back three. They used a 1-2-2 zone against Memphis and traps to smother Ja Morant in Game 3 of that series. That variety should be the blueprint against Dallas, which will place four shooters around Don\u010di\u0107 for most of this series. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poweldw01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dwight Powell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely get token starting minutes and a little more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas has rotated Dinwiddie and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brunsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jalen Brunson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around Don\u010di\u0107\u2019s orbit in the playoffs. The two usually share the court when Don\u010di\u0107 goes to the bench. Both are adept at taking advantage after a defense has shifted towards Don\u010di\u0107. Dinwiddie and especially Brunson are given free rein to isolate as well and are a complementary duo. Brunson displays incredible footwork in the paint, unafraid to score in the post as a 6\u20191\u201d guard. Dinwiddie tends to slide into step-back three launched over switching defenders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State will likely be content to switch actions involving Brunson and Dinwiddie, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poolejo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jordan Poole<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looming as a likely place to attack for Dallas. The Warriors will try to force turnovers, but Dallas had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eighth-fewest giveaways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the regular season. Golden State will need to remain tenacious when rebounding to fuel their transition offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Will Stephen Curry\u2019s shooting return?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Stephen Curry<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot under 41% from three in a full regular season for the first time in his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was his first time under 40%. And 39%. He converted 38% of his threes and the number has dipped to just under 36% in the playoffs. Curry has been tremendous driving the ball and is earning two more free throws a game, and has set up teammates when not flinging passes out of bounds. He hasn\u2019t done what has made him, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">him<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so far in these playoffs, however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curry has shown flashes of the relocation shots and springy step-backs that have defined the NBA since 2015 but never consistently. The Warriors didn\u2019t face the Grizzlies at full strength, and in fairness to Curry, he put together memorable fourth-quarter performances in those games. He\u2019s an emergency whenever he\u2019s in the vicinity of a handoff from Green. Dallas\u2019 eyes will be fixed on Curry every moment the Warriors have the ball. Thompson and Poole will surely require similar attention during the Western Conference Finals as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State\u2019s offense has been inconsistent game-to-game and even quarter-to-quarter in the playoffs. That\u2019s a product of their reliance on threes and propensity for turnovers, but they are capable of unmatched brilliance. The Mavericks will need to communicate to navigate Golden State\u2019s usual maze of screens, and split cuts. When they are successful, Dinwiddie, Brunson, and Don\u010di\u0107 will all be hunted by Curry and especially Poole. Curry in particular usually hunts bigs on switches and needs to target smaller players instead is an interesting wrinkle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas could put <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bullore01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Reggie Bullock<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Curry and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/finnedo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dorian Finney-Smith<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Green, and switch actions involving the two. You can anticipate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/klebima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Maxi Kleber<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be heavily involved as a helper or switch defender on Curry and Poole. The Mavericks need to consistently force turnovers and box out Looney, Wiggins, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porteot01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Otto Porter Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to win the possession battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Final thoughts and prediction<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s Western Conference Finals are rife with narrative possibilities. An aging-yet-dynastic giant going against a young, upstart squad. Curry and Don\u010di\u0107 as superstars engaging in a battle for supremacy. A rematch of the \u201cWe Believe\u201d-era Warriors\u2019 upset of top-seeded Dallas 15 years ago. And a crowning of the first-ever <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/16\/conference-finals-mvp-predictions\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Conference Finals MVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The on-court dynamics will be even more compelling. The championship pedigree of Steve Kerr and staff will be tested by Don\u010di\u0107\u2019s unique skills. Will Green defend him one-on-one? Porter\u2019s health is an underrated story heading into this series; he may be part of the Warriors\u2019 best closing lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will Jason Kidd and staff attempt to slow Curry and Golden State\u2019s slew of three-point marksmen? This is the first time out of the first round for this Dallas team; will everyone respond to the pressure? Game 7 against Phoenix was a good omen, but these Warriors are a different beast. This series is incredibly tough to call since these two teams never met as constituted in the regular season.
