The game plan couldn\u2019t have resembled how the Warriors won Game Four. For the sake of Kings fans everywhere let&#8217;s hope not, anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Brown was the substitute coach for the Warriors after Steve Kerr was placed in health and safety protocols. The new head coach in Sacramento led the team to a win, but this was not a triumph. The Warriors won Game Four in the face of tenacious Grizzlies defense and were fortunate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moranja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ja Morant<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was unable to play. There are no style points in the postseason, however. A three-point kayak through a choppy river counts the same as a 30-point cruise, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AuAsyzzBVVE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sea Captain<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Klay Thompson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might say. Here\u2019s how the Warriors won Game Four and sealed their commanding 3-1 series lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How the Golden State Warriors Won Game Four<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Strong defense<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible to complement the Warriors\u2019 defensive performance without again mentioning Morant\u2019s absence. The Warriors defended Morant well in Game Three, utilizing a variety of schemes and defenders. They ran a 1-2-2 zone in the first quarter to disrupt Memphis\u2019 rhythm, then stayed disciplined and forced Morant to his weaker right hand. It was a vast improvement over Game Two. Morant still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/boxscores\/202205070GSW.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 34 points on incredible efficiency and added seven assists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit the Warriors for taking advantage of Morant\u2019s absence, then. They conceded a number of size mismatches against this Memphis team but fought well without excessive fouling. The Warriors won Game Four by ensuring the Grizzlies couldn\u2019t create threes without their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/02\/ten-best-playoff-players-left-in-the-nba-postseason\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary shot creator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Memphis\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/game\/mem-vs-gsw-0042100234\/box-score#box-score\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9-35 shooting from three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (just 26%) meant they could never take full advantage of their own stifling defense. There was no fear of facing a 20-point lead against Morant-less Memphis, as they couldn\u2019t sustain a threatening scoring run. The game essentially being decided by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greendr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Draymond Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s block of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three-point attempt was a fitting end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"9dlhtjlTTj9NEzlm7asy0A\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/965313210\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'9dlhtjlTTj9NEzlm7asy0A',sig:'_otXCF3VxWxqpU70oENNRQZGHif9t06TsoWzV5A6sh8=',w:'594px',h:'404px',items:'965313210',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><b>Free throws<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is, admittedly, boring. No one wants to talk about free throws! Those little set shots from a line painted can\u2019t be the reason your favorite team won. The fact is Golden State made 20 free throws, and Memphis converted only nine. The Warriors won Game Four by limiting the Grizzlies to 15 free throw attempts, an extension of their good defense mentioned above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The value of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Stephen Curry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was on display as he made every free throw in the final frame. The Warriors as a team shot 20-22 from the line. The Warriors attempted at least 22 free throws in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=how+many+times+in+2021-2022+regular+season+did+warriors+attempt+22+free+throws\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than half their games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this regular season. Memphis did intentionally foul late in the fourth quarter to inflate the Warriors\u2019 free throw totals. Still, making 91% was a tidy improvement over their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leagues\/NBA_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77% number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the season. It was a team effort, with only Curry and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wiggian01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Wiggins<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missing freebies on the night. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Memphis mistakes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis\u2019 own mistakes played a big role as the Warriors won Game Four. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/04\/28\/what-can-we-learn-from-the-warriors-series-win-over-the-nuggets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State has<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/03\/golden-state-warriors-three-takeaways-from-game-one-win\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/05\/06\/golden-state-warriors-three-adjustments-to-make-after-game-two-loss\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turnover issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the Grizzlies\u2019 shot selection became the biggest self-inflicted wound either team faced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Desmond Bane<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit a tremendous buzzer-beating three to end the third quarter, bruising his way through defenders to hoist the ball on time. It was reminiscent of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UArnkoxcJ_A\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curry\u2019s three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to end the third quarter in Game Four of the Warriors\u2019 second-round series against Memphis in 2015. If Memphis won this game, plenty of think pieces comparing the two shots would have been written. To say it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dillon Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 fault Bane\u2019s shot won\u2019t be remembered that way is probably an overstatement. Brooks\u2019 5-19 performance makes that a valid thought, however. The final make was a meaningless, banked-in three from just inside of halfcourt with the game already decided, as well. Sadly, Brooks\u2019 aggression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worked against his team as the Warriors won Game Four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memphis committed more fouls, and the Warriors earned more rebounds for the fourth consecutive game. Jackson Jr. and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kyle Anderson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each missed free throws in crunch time. The shot Jackson Jr. hoisted was an unnecessary launch even before Green blocked it.
