But the Nets played from behind for most of the series and were overmatched.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A lot of stuff that may factor into why we lose, but they were just a better team,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a><\/strong> said after the Nets\u2019 season-ending loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Celtics Cruise in First Round Sweep of Nets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>And the Most Skilled Duo is\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was talk going into this series about Durant and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrie Irving<\/a><\/strong> being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yQVK6d0fv5Q\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most skilled duo in the NBA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If we\u2019re considering the body of work they\u2019ve both amassed during their entire careers, there\u2019s a strong argument there. But they weren\u2019t even the best duo in this playoff series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics duo of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jayson Tatum<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Brown<\/a><\/strong> outscored Durant and Irving in each game other than game 1 of the series. Tatum was the best player on the court all series, showing those who didn\u2019t watch a lot of Celtics basketball this season why he was firmly in the MVP conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Defense Wins Championships<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics\u2019 league-leading defense was on display in this series, despite playing without <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=williro04,williro07&amp;search=Robert+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Williams<\/a> <\/strong>for the first two games. Their versatility allowed them to switch on everything and forced Durant and Kyrie into contested shots. Tatum and Brown combined for 17 steals over the 4 games, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Smart<\/a><\/strong> showed what made him the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/bostons-marcus-smart-wins-2021-22-kia-defensive-player-of-the-year-award\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA\u2019s defensive player of the year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nets simply had no answer for the Celtics&#8217; defensive prowess.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Size Mattered in Celtics&#8217; Sweep of Nets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics&#8217; size and length predictably posed a challenge for the Nets. Boston won the rebound battle every game of the series.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celtics coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/u\/udokaim01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ime Udoka<\/a><\/strong> has multiple bigs on his roster who can stretch the floor and defend. In Williams\u2019 absence in game 1, veteran <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/horfoal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Horford<\/a> <\/strong>stepped up, logging 20 points and 15 rebounds in 41 minutes. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/theisda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Theis<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willigr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Williams<\/a><\/strong> played meaningful minutes all series long, each finding their stroke from deep on open threes when the Nets\u2019 defense collapsed on Tatum in the lane. Even [Robert] Williams had an impact on the game in the 14 minutes he played in games 3 and 4 off the bench.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nets\u2019 bigs, on the other hand, got crushed upfront. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/drumman01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre Drummond<\/a><\/strong> barely played in the second half of the series after getting destroyed on pick and rolls and failing to get back in transition. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/griffbl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Griffin<\/a><\/strong> lumbered around, made a few hustle plays, and even knocked down a couple 3\u2019s, but otherwise had little impact on the game. Nets coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nashst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Nash<\/a> <\/strong>turned to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/claxtni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nic Claxton<\/a><\/strong> at the 5 to try and fight through screens and have some more speed up front, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/26\/nets-nic-claxton-misses-10-straight-free-throws-amid-hacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his free throw shooting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> negated any positive value he brought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When pressed for answers during an in-game interview in game 4, Nash even admitted being overmatched and struggled to find the right lineups because the Nets bigs can\u2019t stretch the floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Better Team Won<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the Celtics, the Nets came into the playoffs lacking a team identity and depth. It\u2019s rare to see an NBA team all of a sudden click and find their groove in the playoffs. Instead, the Nets did what they have done all year, underperforming against better opponents. Any chance the Nets had in this series rested upon Durant and Kyrie&#8217;s ability to take over the game. The Celtics kept them in check.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNT announcer and former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy quirked during the game 3 broadcast, \u201cthis isn\u2019t a pickup game\u201d. The Nets were foolish to think their lack of continuity in the regular season could translate into postseason success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celtics were the better team all season. They had home-court advantage in this series. Yet, were only slight favorites to beat the Nets because of the upside of Durant and Irving.
