The 26-year coach had the great honor of accomplishing this lifetime achievement in front of the San Antonio crowd that has been his home for the better part of three decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gregg Popovich Becomes All-Time Winningest Coach<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Against the Odds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popovich and the Spurs accomplished this record in a surprising, come-from-behind win against the Utah Jazz. San Antonio stormed back in the fourth quarter, beating the Jazz to the tune of a 40-28 fourth-quarter score. An output made even more surprising by the measly 14 points scored in the previous period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spurs were led in scoring by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dejounte Murray,<\/strong><\/a> who had an impressive stat line of 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals. It was a real team effort for San Antonio, with six players scoring in double figures for the night. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colliza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Collins<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkelo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lonnie Walker IV<\/strong><\/a> were impressive from the bench. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnske04.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Keldon Johnson,<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poeltja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jakob Poeltl,<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/richajo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josh Richardson<\/strong><\/a> contributed on the offensive end. The Spurs will look to turn this win into a streak tonight against the Pacers at home.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah\u2019s starting lineup struggled from the field, with the exception of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Donovan Mitchell,<\/strong><\/a> who led the team with 24 points. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkjo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jordan Clarkson<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whiteha01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hassan Whiteside<\/strong><\/a> were big in reserve minutes, but it wasn\u2019t enough to overcome the struggles of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/conlemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Conley<\/strong><\/a> (2-14 FG) and the rest of the starting five. The Jazz will have a chance to wipe this game from their memory tonight against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/03\/10\/sacramento-kings-contenders-or-pretenders\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Sacramento Kings.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Number One Spot<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Popovich\u2019s 1,336th victory, he officially Passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/nelsodo01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Don Nelson<\/strong><\/a> as first all-time in regular-season wins. It\u2019s fitting that Popovich is the one to break <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2022\/03\/08\/gregg-popovich-ties-don-nelson-for-most-wins-all-time\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Nelson\u2019s record.<\/strong> <\/a>The 26-year head coach once served as an assistant coach to Nelson for two seasons (1992-94).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popovich already owned the record for most combined regular and postseason wins, which leaves only one more record for him to chase should he desire to do so. Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers Legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/jacksph01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Phil Jackson<\/strong><\/a> owns the record for most playoff wins with 229. Popovich currently sits at third, just one win behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/rileypa01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pat Riley\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> 171.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Spurs may make the postseason this year through the play-in, the odds of Popovich sticking around long enough to break this record are slim to none. At 59 games behind, Pop and the Spurs would need at least four more postseasons to have a shot at this. However, they would need to win the NBA title in three of those seasons in order to break Jackson\u2019s record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[pickup_prop id=&#8221;17074&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>End of an Era<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gregg Popovich era is likely coming to an end. The five-time NBA Champion and 2020 gold medalist will be a Hall of Famer. Many fans hope to see the coach return for one more season and a shot at a farewell playoff run.
