Johnson is leading L.A. once again.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Magic Johnson Leading Lakers Again<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Lakers in Transition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GM Mitch Kupchak has been relieved of his duties and Jim Buss will no longer be EVP of Basketball Operations. 2\/2<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers\/status\/834103099560062976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 21, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Lakers<a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/LAL\/2017.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>announced the termination of GM <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kupchmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mitch Kupchak<\/strong><\/a> and Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations\u00a0<strong>Jim Buss<\/strong> on Tuesday. Kupchak had been with the Lakers organization since 1981 \u2013 first as a player, then in the front office. Buss is the son of the late Dr. Jerry Buss and brother of <strong>Jeanie Buss<\/strong>, President of the Lakers, and he was Kupchak&#8217;s boss. Both men have been criticized about previous years of Lakers ineptitude on the court and questionable decisions off of it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nba\/news\/lakers-jim-buss-ill-quit-if-club-doesnt-contend-in-3-or-4-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In 2014, Buss famously stated that he would step down if the Lakers didn&#8217;t contend within three to four years. <\/a>The Lakers currently own the third-worst record in the league at 19-39.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Magic Johnson to the\u00a0Rescue<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">OFFICIAL: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MagicJohnson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MagicJohnson<\/a> named President of Basketball Operations in front office restructuring. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zyz3HMbosr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/Zyz3HMbosr<\/a> 1\/2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b8HezpW3Uc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/b8HezpW3Uc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers\/status\/834103024763023360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 21, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2017\/02\/02\/magic-johnson-los-angeles-lakers-jeanie-buss\/97403858\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Lakers announced the re-hiring of Johnson, an NBA legend, on February 2nd<\/a>. This time, Johnson\u00a0was placed in an advisory role to Jeanie Buss. The move was met with approval by\u00a0many around the basketball world, including NBA Commissioner <strong>Adam Silver<\/strong>. Silver said, in a statement, that &#8220;Magic Johnson is one of the NBA&#8217;s greatest players and it is terrific to see him returning to the Lakers. He is a truly special person and a natural leader with a relentless passion for basketball and profound knowledge of the game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Lakers, Johnson&#8217;s role would be &#8220;advising ownership on all business and basketball matters, collaborating with coaches, evaluating and mentoring players, assessing future franchise needs, and helping ownership to determine the best path for growth and success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson wasted little time expressing his intentions and ambitions. In an interview with USA Today Sports, Johnson declared that he was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2017\/02\/10\/magic-johnson-shot-caller-los-angeles-lakers\/97732992\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;working to call the shots, because it only works that way. Right now, I&#8217;m advising. I get that. But at the end of the day, then we all got to come together and somebody&#8217;s got to say, &#8216;I&#8217;m making the final call,&#8217; all right? And who&#8217;s that going to be?
